TheJeepNut
oh don't get excited, I don't have one...... but I'm wondering about an SJ AMC20. Anyone know the WMS spec on one of those?... I did some browsing but couldn't seem to find any info on that. Should be somewhat easy to find and I can get new perches welded easy enough... #24's gettin' a Golen stroker. I know it's not an optimal build for a street application, but I need to minimize complications and keeping with the 4.0 seems the right thing for me to do with it. So now I'm looking for something to put in #24 that'll stand up to my abuse. I know that AMC'ers are runnin' AMC20s at tracks far and wide... the 71-74's are the right width... or close enough for gov't work, so that's what I'm thinking at the moment. But there are CERTAIN people on this list HOARDING Javelin axles... according to threads I was reading prior to post... Just kiddin' guy, I'd sit on them too... but if anyone knows someone willing to sell one, keep me in mind. And I'm not even trying to find the golden MJ AMC20. 4.10 gears would make a great 0-60 time but it'll KILL me as a DD with that stroker burning premium on top of it. I can't afford the luxury of a custom axle and I've got a tranny issue to resolve as well. And the truck has been sitting idle since 1998. Kinda sad, but it's been sitting now for several more years than it was ever driven. So the brakes will need done, interior is shot, headliner, sunroof, tires, audio, LineX the bed... I NEED to keep this project under $8k or very close and 60% of that will be motor. Not sure it's doable but I think I can get a drive train in it for that anyway. But I KNOW that 260hp stoker is gonna eat a D35 alive in a hurry. I know my foot. That D35 hasn't got a chance. I was gonna join up on the AMC Forum looking for feedback on strength issues relative to higher horsepower as opposed to torque or the dynamics of rocks n' trails. But I'm sure many of you are also "cross posters" with both a "wheelie rig" and a "wheelin' rig" so thought I would run it by the group. What about D44s w/ welded spider? Seem to be a lot of those around for XJ/MJ's. Too much tire chewing for street use? Remember... I only have ONE axle to deal with.... I'll have to do some kind of posi on whatever goes in there.... I think 3.55ish gears. I want it to run like a scalded dog, but I've got to be able to afford to fuel it... The one other option I've given consideration to is the Ford 9" ... something newer w/ disc brakes perhaps... any one have an idea what trucks/cars carried approx. 60.5" worth of Ford 9" rear under them? Please share opinions re: options for a strong rear end on the Street Comanche geared toward street performance. (Legal Disclaimer: I have not ever performed, partcipated in, or actually observed a dog scalding, but I'll just assume it would run like hell.) richasco
Waggy axles are 62" and most are 3.31 geared, they also have a 6x 5.5 bolt pattern. Have you considered the Explorer 8.8? They are very strong, have disc brakes and come in many different ratio's and limited slip diff's are common. All of that comes in just about the right width and a 5x4.5 bolt pattern. Zenobian_84
Most of the AMC 20 SJ axles are, like Richasco stated, lower geared. Usually in the 3.31 range, with few above that number. If anything, I would look into an Explorer 8.8 or a Dana 44; both are pretty tough stuff axles and will suffice for what you plan on doing. Don (Hornbrod) has a 4.6 stroker and I believe he runs a 44. Not sure if he's had any noticeable issues with it though. I'm also fairly certain he likes to occasionally drive it with an iron boot on as well.
dasbulliwagen
To look for rear axles, try www.car-part.com . You might even be able to find an MJ AMC-20. You could also search for the right Ford 8.8 or dana 44 this way. I hear the Isuzu Trooper has a good Dana 44 under it, but it is 6 bolt lug pattern. I snapped two axles in the D35 (both on the passenger side) and an axle upgrade is absolutely necessary if you like to get on the stroker every now and then. I do. I had already installed Ford Explorer disk brakes on the D35, so I opted for the D44 or maybe a Ford 8.8 so I could swap them in easier. I really preferred an MJ D44 to keep things in the family, and finally found one w. 3.55 gearing for sale on the Cherokee Tech forum right up the road in TN. Since I have 31" tires, I had it regeared it to 4.10 and installed a Trac Lok diff from a Honda Passport D44. It's the perfect ratio for me. The Explorer disks swapped over w. no problems. Zero problems so far.

But who wants to do that with a stroker?
Incommando
Welded axles on a street car are probably not a great idea. The chew up tires pretty well and if you are starting off with a low-tread street tire anyway....

Kinda regret ever moving back here from Santa Cruz... But maybe a Ford 8.8 is the way to go. Should be plentiful and with maybe a trac-loc already installed...disc brakes... how can I go wrong? Probably won't find a D44 setup like that already. Though I'll probably have to be lucky to find an 8.8 w/ trac-loc and 3.55/3.7ish gears too... Will do some more homework on that. Thanks!
