critique my plan..

Got some nice funds coming in soon, and here is on the list of things... could use some input... thanks guys...

 

I have a HPd44 front and 9" rear from a 79 ford (manual lockouts)

Going to order:

4.88's

spool front

Would like an LSD in the rear, for street driving as well around town... AUSSIE?!?!

DIsc brakes F/R

(Need to know what needs to be done to braking system to function properly w/discs f/r and obviously bigger)

 

Bumpers F/R, winch in front, reciever in rear

Sliders

Skids

 

(ordering tomorrow)

TNT Ylink LA Kit including:

RE HD Adj Track bar,

RE 7.5" Coils

and JKS Quicker DIscos

JKS ACOS

Front/Rear Brake lines

ALCAN 4" Leaf packs already ordered

1" Shackle

 

Converting to 4wd, still need to find a ax-15 and np231, and obviously front driveshaft...

 

What will I need to do to my rear DS at that point?

 

And after those kinks worked out ( I know it sounds farfetched, but you will all see, I PROMISE plenty of PICS / WRITEUPS! :) )

FUll exhaust

Still researching intakes....

 

Overall, with this complete setup, do you think Ill be able to still drive it around town?

 

Was only thinking LSD for the rear so it would drive well... will I regret this decision later???

Pfffffffffffffffft. I LOVE my front spool!

 

 

But I have hydro-assist. Oh, and I hated it when I didn't!

 

 

And I have a LSD in the rear and keep talking about welding it. Just never get around to it. It sucks compared to a spool - even though it's a very stiff LS.

What size of stroker engine are you putting in it? We just had a friend put a 383 stroker in his truck. I guess it's it's pretty unreal. I haven't had a chance to go for a ride with his new mods yet, but looking forward to it and hearing the power in his motor now.

That's almost the same thing I'm doing. I'm going HP D44 in front, Ford 9 in the rear, but I'm going 5.88 gears (it's like 5.83 and 5.87 or something) and planning on 38" tires. Of course I'm running a 2.5L and it will be a trailer queen, so gears are everything to me.

 

And it started out as a 2wd too... funny how many people seem to be doing this lately.

I think your plan is solid. I didnt see what size tires you plan on running?

Also how do you plan on swithching the 76 front end over to disc brakes?

The 9" is easy there are a million different kits to do that, and most run in the low 300's.

 

The spool in the front is deffinately a bad idea..... especially with stock shafts. For alil bit more you can buy a lunch box locker and call it good. Speeols cause funny handling on the trail especially in the front.

 

Also sounds like you are throwing lots of money at your rig... Hope you plan on keeping it for a while

won't matter on the road, but offroad it will unless you plan on unlocking your hubs every five seconds.

a wide 36 or not so wide 37....

79 front end.. didnt mean 76...

Thinking of upgrading shafts, but dk much about them.

Absolutely plan on keeping it.

 

Jeeps are who I am... if that makes sense... was lucky to find a basically rustless mj, that I'll keep til the new stroker goes.. and when it goes... It'll get a new motor again... frame trashed... Ill buy a stripped mj.. and swap em....

 

The jeep is staying :D:D

How many people here have run a front spool?

 

 

They don't drive bad. It's a little odd. But I had my crash course in driving with a front spool on an icy road with a dusting of snow. I'm still here... It just tends to cause a front wheel skid if you crank the steering to hard. You also can get the front tires to scream on dry pavement... But it drives FINE on dry pavement (other than the noise) and on a dirt road/trail it's never a problem.

 

 

 

Other than the heavy steering. But I made a run with just regular ol' power steering. Yes, my arms hated me and I had to do some creative wiggling in places. If I had a better scrub radius it wouldn't be as bad. Although, I'd still never recommend it without hydro-assist.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Anyways, the difference between a full carrier locker and a lunchbox locker is that a full carrier replaces your carrier and the lunchbox goes in the carrier. You have to set the clearances right on a lunchbox, or they'll be REALLY harsh/won't lock - even then sometimes people can't get them to stop ratcheting badly. On the other hand, some people have zero issues with them and find they work fine on the street and off road. A lunchbox locker is considerably weaker than a full carrier locker, and IMHO no where near as good.

 

FWIW, an bad lunchbox locker will potentially cause failures because the locking action is so harsh and tends to shockload parts rather badly. With 36s or 37s on a D44 with stock shafts/joints I would probably count on there being a failure sooner rather than later. Not that a spool would be a help...

 

 

And on the subject of upgraded axleshafts, there's really very little to know. For a D44 they're all pretty much the same - other than superior rolls their splines which is slightly better. Mostly it's a cost difference (yukons!). You'll want upgraded u-joints too (CTM, OX, Superior, and there's a few other brands). Which is better? Hell if I know - they're all stronger than the outers or hubs on a D44 - so it is kinda moot.

 

Personally I have Yukons and superior joints.

Wouldn't a full time locker be as dangerous on snow/ice?

 

My XJ was locked front and rear and when engaged (4wd / front collar locked) would go sideways on the snow or ice as quickly as it would go forward.

 

What happens is the tire not getting power would normally track, even if you're spinning the other, but since both are powered, when you break traction with both, you might as well be on ball bearings. It's similar to locking up the brakes and losing steering.

 

It's fun on a sidehill too- even as much as streets are sloped for rain water and starting out, breaking traction, you can slide more or less sideways.

 

It would probably affect turning with a spool (I think that's what Dirty's saying?) because one wheel would be forced to break traction when turning on ice.

 

I don't know I'm struggling over whether to leave the front of mine open, put in a detroit or do a selectable locker. The selectable was ditched in the back to save some money and I was planning on leaving the front open. I'm not so sure now...

I have a love/hate relationship with my front mini-spool (78 ford axle) and have finally decided that it will be coming out. I'm sick and tired of not being able to turn the steering wheel, or even if I can turn the wheel, not being able to turn the truck. It's hard enough following TJs on the tight trail without having to muscle through 3 or 5 point turns every 2 minutes. Traction is INCREDIBLE though and someday I hope to have the funds available for a selectible locker. In the meantime, I got a good deal on a lockright and it will be taking the minispool's place come springtime. At least that way I can shift into 2wd and the front will unlock for turns.

It happens in mud too, which can be an advantage if you're expecting it. I'm in Arizona now and I gotta tell you I already miss the mud sumpin fierce!

Definitely a love/hate relationship w/me and mud.

 

I hate it, but once I'm in it I love it, and if there are winches around, I love it even more.

 

I'm one of those take the shoes off n get dirty toenails kinda guys.. yanno?

 

And I'm a pretty technical, although heavy footed driver.. I'm kinda' liking the sound of kicking sideways on command, once mastered.

 

Is there a link to somewhere that will thoroughly explain the differences b/w types of lockers?

Yeah I love mud, I just hate having to go through 2 feet of standing water to get to it.

Ha! Once mastered! I was down at a farm run in Tennessee going up a slick piece of wet rock. About halfway up I broke traction, all four tires and the XJ started to drift sideways. Now I wasn't going up, or down but slowly sideways spining the tires all the time. After moving over about one full lane the XJ was positioned between two trees, one mere feet from the rear hatch exactly in the center and one in the same position in front.

 

I'm sitting there smoking all four tires slowly, turning right and left for naught and the XJ is just bobbing slowly between those two trees. I figured letting off would send me backwards crashing into the rear tree and slowing down the tires to try to grab traction would send me into the front one- the latter of which I tried, as the front bumper could take it.

 

It was to no avail and I sat there grinding aways the tires stuck between those trees for quite some time. I don't remember how the strap got connected, I think I was spinning the whole time but I got strapped out. I remember discussing what to do out the window while spinning all four tires. Haha.

 

I can't believe we didn't just have a few guys try to push me sideways the other way, but then again, it was a bit stressful for thinkin at the time!
