Tranny type?

Recommended Posts

I really can't find much info on my tranny. What type was used in the 89' Pioneer?

Its the infamous 'conversion year'.

There are actually 4 different possible trannies.

An auto is AW-4

But there are three possible manuals.

A four-speed would be AX-4

Two possible 5-speeds.

Early in the production year, you would have the BA-10 commonly referred to as the 'puke-goat', or the 'no-go'

Or the AX-15 in the later part of the production year.

Both are aluminum cased, but the BA-10 has a split case.

The AX-4 and AX-5 are for the 2.5L, the BA-10 and AX-15 are for the 4.0L

Bit a hassle if not needed (KISS).

Keep in mind that the AW4 can be setup to shift manually using an electric switch, including manual control over the torque converter. If you wanna spend the money for something that can be made in the garage: www.awshifting.com

Bounty, have you done this or plan to in the future?

has anyone done this? if so do you reccommend it for a d/d?

It is not needed with a 2WD daily driver. For a 4x4 that gets used on trails, the ability to control whether the tranny stays in 1 or 2 has value. On the street you don't need it.

I discourage doing this if you don't need it because there are several version on the Internet and not all are equal. A young friend of mine did one of these mods to his father's 95 XJ and burned out the TCU because something ddn't work as advertised, or because he didn't follow the instructions correctly.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
