if done properly I like it.

Many fellas with backhalved XJ's end up that way because it's so practical to have that storage outside, but it's nice to be able to have some friends in the cab.

I wish that Jeep had made an extended cab MJ, I find the confines of the cab just too small, there's no place for anything.

Well put. I am not a big fan of the 4dr pickup with a 4ft bed. I haul too much stuff and at times I find my mj inadequate (sp?). I think it is neat looking but not sure I would want one. Would be great to run parts in though.

Agreed. Back in 1988 I bought an XJ rather than an MJ for the simple reason that the MJ didn't have an extended cab. If I had the time and a place to work I would be building a Cheromanche. The one in that ad looks reasonably well done, but for my purposes the bed is too small (no doubt because they retained the Cherokee wheelbase). I'd want to put either an MJ shortbed box on it, or maybe a shortbed box truncated to about 5 feet in length. Gotta be enough left to be useful, or why bother?

Hey Eagle, one thing is that your idea makes sense. notice on this rig though, that the wheelbase of the cherokee is not retained. the cherokee wheel well is right behind the rear doors, whereas this one is filled in there.

 

the guy lengthened the frame in some way and didn't have the sense to make a functional box. it's relisted on ebay btw. the welds inside the bed look terrible.

The pictures of the welds on the box aren't clear enough for me to see weld quality or lack there of, but the bead consistency on the new crossmember of the rear frame area seem iffy.

 

I like the truck, that it actually has a full interior, and can understand that all that work to put on a bed was just for show, but there are alot of details I don't care for, like on any vehicle. It's too easy to nitpick though.

A useful hybrid would be to strectch the cab to use a Cherokee 2 door with a short bed on a LWB. Lots of storage in the cab with easy access.

agreed. Back half an XJ right behind the doors, put the Mj cab on it, then use a shortbox bed on a LWB frame. It might even all fit without modifying the frame.

I think that what he is saying is to start with an LWB MJ

 

Remove the back half of the cab. Slide it back far enough to use an MJ Short Bed.

 

Fill in between with quarter panels from a 2dr XJ. In order to maintain the structure. I would leave the origional MJ Pillars in place and as much of the cab structure in place as possible and just move the rear wall back using flooring and quarters from a 2 door XJ (not that the flooring matters)

 

That MJ in the pics above that is for sale on EBAY is great! THe only thing though is those awful looking rear doors. Why do all that work? Make it look so nice?? Only to leave a freaking wheel well in the middle of the Jeep on the door. Piece a 2door door bottom and a chunk of pillar to fix that problem.

i was thinking though, would it not be easier to get a shortbed mj and a 2dr xj, then chop the xj behind the seats, and the mj from the back of the cab back?

 

the 1 thing is the frame rails wouldn't line up...but they would if you cut the xj frame short and retained the mj frame rails to the footwell, then melded it all together to create a cab and a half comanche with storage room behind the rear seats.

 

and of course, then, power everything and all the options would be a must.
