LobsterThief
I showed my Comanche to an older guy at my work. When I bought my MJ the previous owner had welded a nice solid pipe bumper to the frame in place of the stock bumper, which I presume was damaged. Anyways, the guy said that when he was younger people who put those bumpers on would fill them with concrete to put some extra weight on the (usually) empty bed to provide for better traction and control. There's a 99.9% chance I will not do this either way, but I thought it was an interesting concept. Does anyone see any value in doing this? Or is it just a myth?
mnkyboy
It might help in the winter for better traction on ice and snow, but you wouldn't want it there permanently.

Pete M
that's a poor place to put the weight anyway. it's better that it be directly over the rear tires.

Jeep Driver
Mine rides real nice with about 200lbs at the tailgate. I figure my receiver/bumper combo when I get it built will be about 150lbs and I expect it to give me a nice ride. Concrete? no..........there is a word for crap like that but I can't use it here. jeepcoma
Mine definitely rides nicer with weight in the back (especially with the MT springs), so it sounds plausibe in theory. Realistically though, how much could you actually get in there? I'm trying to visualize the volume and don't really see being able to add more than 20 pounds; probably half that if the pipes are of decent thickness. Better off just stacking the bags in the bed. carnuck
Drill and tap the bumper (top and bottom) for fill/drain plugs. Use water to test. (just not salt water) You could even add water when you need more rear traction and drain it when you don't.

You have a writeup for that Pete???
AMCJeepMJ
With that much weight that far back, it will aid in being one step closer to this: !
ParadiseMJ
Or is it just a myth? Myth, no. Mis-information, yes. Just because some guy says it so doesn't make it a "myth" or not. So he did it, BFD.
