I spent December at my folks place in GA and did the faux stonework that my dad has been dying to get up on his house. I had to restructure the front wall and practically rebuild the chimney, but in the end it was lots of fun and turned out great. :D don't worry about that green. paint will be happening in spring.

borrowed a mixer. If I didn't have one available, we'd have purchased one. that was a LOT of mortar.

it's a manufactured stone we got through Lowes. brand name is M-rock I believe. very nice stuff. was even able to pressure wash mortar some residue off with no injury to the color.

what's a cricket (with regards to a chimney)? it's a propane fireplace if it matters.

Extra ridge in the roof immediately above the chimney, which deflects snow/water to either side of it, rather than allowing it to build up against the chimney. They're kinda recommended if the chimney is not near the ridge of the roof, or very narrow. If it is flashed well, and has worked, it's probably okay...

gotcha. there is one back there. not much snow in georgia, so it might be smaller than a northern version.

Do you have any idea off the top of your head, the price difference in building a house out of stone, and having done what you did?

I don't know the price of anything. I'm just the slave labor. :D
