RC MJ Crawler

Well, still waiting on some stuff for the diesel, waiting on the weather to break to paint and prep the farmer... So the MJ I got for Christmas is finally getting some love.

It started out as a used Axial SCX10 scale rock crawler. The room mate took it apart in prep to fix it up, but after letting it sit, lost motivation and sold it to me as a partial gift. Plans are to rebuild the entire thing with all new bearings, re-wire it, paint here and there, and use a new screw kit to put it together. I've had a thread going on the rc crawler forum, but figured I would post some highlights here. It's fun working on one of my MJ's while sitting on the couch watching tube.

What it looked like when he ran it last:

Trans taken apart, found no grease and a lot of rust:

Taking the axles apart to put new bearings and grease:

Washed up and drying:

New bearings:

All coming back together:

While all this has been going on, I became more and more dissatisfied with the paint job that the previous owner did. I have a clean body that I will paint, but I want to keep that one nice. So it was time to dirty up the "Wheeler" body. I took off the ridiculous mudflaps, the "Texas house of representatives" stickers on the doors, and all those stupid lights. I taped off the door and fender, and shot them with some red.

To add to the effect of the "Junkyard" fender and door, I added some Pioneer stripes, and some lettering from the junkyard. I also primered the rockers and cab corners to represent the midwest. The window got a smattering of decals, and some bars to make it look like a slider too.

And that's where it sits for now! Waiting on a couple small screws and such, but once I get those, I'll have it all together and give it a run.

Rob

The one thing that the PO did get right was he could take a mean video of it, and was pretty good at editing them. Too bad that he never cleaned the thing out, or took care of it. I can't tell you how unhappy I was to be pulling sand, hair, and mud out of the axles and trans.

Looks like fun do they come in gas

You wouldn't want gas. Gas is a high strung, finnicky beast in RC. I used to think that it was gas or go home, but once you play with the trouble free electric, you don't go back. Besides, you need the low end torque that electric gives you for crawling. Using a nitro RC for rock crawling would be like dropping a dragster engine in your MJ and trying to go rock crawling.

Rob, be sure to add some full size stick on wheel weights (what is used for balancing a rim) around the inside of the RC wheels. Virtually eliminates the 'bounce' and really gives it a ton of traction

To anybody else wanting this MJ Body... you will have to find one used or second hand. ProLine has once again discontinued the MJ body.

Finished it up today. Got the body mounted, steering trimmed, re-did the settings on the speed control, and was climbing anything I could find in the living room. I was pretty surprised that without the body on, I can back straight up a wall to the point where it flips over... Pretty neat. I can't wait to mess around with it this week in the nicer weather. That, and get cranking on some real MJ's.

Bump for pics and videos!

Believe it or not, after some picking of lines and a couple different tries, it made it up and over!
