comanchekid
So the motor blew on my MJ. I am starting the build on making my 88 comanche into a 2000 comanche using everything from drivetrain wiring carpet to fenders and doors should be fun!! i just thought i should write up something and show everyone the progress! so i picked up a 2000 rolled xj to get the parts from: pulled the two in next to eachother and started ripping the MJ apart and then got it all gutted had a little rust to deal with but no big deal: all primed: painted : and now onto the fun stuff cut the brackets off to allow for room for the new steering colum bracket: started mocking the steering column bracket in: had to nip the corner off: and started to get some wiring in: XJ torn apart: Relocating the steering column hole through the fire wall : Made a plate to fix the hole: Started with the insulation: And did a bit more insulation and pad... then started mounting the new steering column bracket : made some plates and welded them on to the existing flange to mount the upper part of the dash: got the dash in and and mounted: started looking at where the ebrake and shifter go: Sorry guys I missed a couple inbetween pictures like doing more insulation and the lower mounting holes for the dash... I will be doing more work on it today so look for more updates tonight Thanx for looking Justin

Good Luck and keep us posted. comenschen
"a little rust to deal with.....really? Are you trying to be a jerk? I suppose you could make it up to us unfortune rusty MJ owners by borrowing a better camera for your next round of pics. I'll have more hours of rust repair in my truck then you'll have in your whole project! Â Really though, looking foward to see how this one shapes up! JENSSEN
Just a quick question/reccomendation if that's just primer on your floor board you need to seal it with some sort of top coat (paint, por15, rhino liner, ect) as primer is pours and won't protect your floor from moisture,,.... (assuming you get a better camera of course)  No i wasnt trying to be a jerk i guess i am one of the lucky ones to have gotten my 3rd MJ with little to no rust on it... i guess thats one positive to having worked at a jeep parts shop ;) (i don't anymore tho) and yeah yeah yeah i will try and get a better camera (although i figured that most of you know what you are looking at in the pictures even though the quality isnt so good but still shows what you need to see) but yes agreed i will try to get a different camera  Just a quick question/reccomendation if that's just primer on your floor board you need to seal it with some sort of top coat (paint, por15, rhino liner, ect) as primer is pours and won't protect your floor from moisture,,.... and yes it primed and painted and i also put another coat of paint right before i lay the insulation in but thank you for the advice...CHEERS
terrawombat
I'll have more hours of rust repair in my truck then you'll have in your whole project! Â This is an unfortunate truth for many of us with rusty MJs. I've been doing a similar conversion to my '88MJ (97+ Interior, front end, doors, etc) and I've spent more time cutting out rust/rot and sealing up the frame to prevent further rust than I have actually getting the 97+ XJ parts in the MJ and fitting them up. Comanche County
Good work, Â Thought I'd let you know that I received a vision from God, he said anyone who completes this swap gets to hang out with John Wayne and Steve McQueen in heaven and you all get to go wheeling together in a 5 trillion acre off road park designed specifically for MJs. It even has a snow cone stand. :wrench:

(I already knew what was wrong with it, having had prior problems with xjs and mjs) i asked him what he wanted and he said "there is something seriously wrong with thing so $450?" I counter offered at $350 and and in my hand the title came and out of the parking lot he went   After had been gone for about 30 minutes i came back out of the shop with a sledge hammer :wrench: and went straight for the cat  spent about 2 minutes smashing the cat....then hopped in the cab and started her up! And guess what Revved up like a charm  took it around the block and everything worked great!!! I was very happy with my purchase :clapping: and i remember thinking to myself "if only this guy knew he would be doing one of these :wall: and i do one of these  Â Â well she has been through a lot of running and a ax 15 swap and used motor swap but now this swap

comanchekid
ok so i feel like a jack @$$ and thought i would remember this but i can't lol the ac lines that go from the compressor one goes to the top of the accumulator and one goes into the firewall.... question is does the one that goes to the accumulator go to the left or the right spot on top on the accumulator? i think the one that comes from the ac goes to the left and the other coming out of firewall goes to the right spot on top???? am i right? Backdraft
The line from the firewall goes to the port nearest the switch on the accumulator. The line from the compressor goes to the port nearest the fender.... HTH!
comanchekid
Thanx backdraft.... I got that figured out... Now on to the next thing I got everything hooked up besides some interior lighting(instrument panel wire for dome lights and wire for rear speakers nd light then the grounds under the seats are not connect thought they are just for seatbelt ground but not sure) and the tail lights are not connected (still have to extend the wires to reach) I extended the fuel pump wires with some wires that were for the rear door(rear wiper lic light and defrost) I hope I didn't mess something up there... But the problem is it will turn over but no fuel... I don't even hear the pump turn on when key is in acc... I dunno if I was just getting anxious to hear it run and I should attaching more but I thought I should have it connected enough to start???? Any help is greatly appreciated thank you Justin Oh I am using the stock xj tank sender and pump too
87Warrior
Beware, if you just hacked out some of the back door wiring your electric locks and windows won't work. The XJ has a crazy cross over harness for those. Â I would double check your grounds and that the fuel pump is actually getting power. IIRC, the fuel pump ground on the XJ was near the rear seat on the driver side.
Rymanrph
I was in your position. I was getting it to turn over, but wasn't getting fuel. I think it ended up being a bad or unconnected ground.
comanchekid
just curious what ground was it for you? and the donor didnt have power locks... so I'm not sure
Rymanrph
I know I had one on the rear harness toward where the lock/window connections are, but I think it was on the passenger side. I think there was another one in the very back toward where the rear wiper connection and tail light connections were on the driver side; I remember that one because I had to ground it on the frame rail. I'm not sure how it would be without the power windows.

comanchekid
ok so my tail lights are broken so i wanted to make some led ones... what i got is 3 lead leds for the stop brake and turn and i got another "driving Light" led for the reverse lights but I'm not to sure how to hook them up because the stock xj used a 3 light system verses me using a 2 light system....i tried wiring them a couple ways but won't work.... this is how i tried first What happens is when u turn on the turn signals it acts as if the emergency flashers are on... so then i tried this (just removing on major on one side) Then everything works fine like that but when the brake lights are on i get no blinker??? any help again is greatly appreciated thanx Justin Oh someone had mention a foreign to American tail light module or something?
