Thunderbear
I found, after looking for a unique commuter that's got a bed and still gets decent gas mileage (2.5).. a decent floorboarded MJ (in freaking ALASKA!), with a dash swap with tach and gauges, and a 5-speed (AX15), I think. For 1500! It can keep my TJ company! Even though it's got the major things I want, the interior is going to need some love. But first, I think I'm going to have to find some emissions stuff off an XJ. I don't know if it'll pass inspection without all that stuff. Pics Thurs when I bring her home. meljr
Nice looking TJ. Welcome to the club. You may be pleasantly surprised at how much better mileage you get with the MJ. -meljr
87Warrior
Your theory won't work.... trust me. I bought my MJ to take over daily driving duties from my TJ. You can click the build link in my sig to see how that is working out for me :rotf: Welcome to the madness. It is a blast!

Thunderbear
I got your mini console right here.. doesn't get any more mini than just a bezel. Is this important? Found it in the floorboard. Headliner woes. Steering wheel.. shell. Mileage.. which I'm pretty sure isn't quite kosher.
JeepcoMJ
nice. that metal piece in the bed is the inspection shield for the transmission bell housing. put it back on...it will keep stuff from messing up your clutch/slave. and, remove that cargo light, turn the rubber gasket 180 degrees to the left, and screw it back in. The TJ will handle all of the hairy 4x4 aspects of Alaska. Nice looking TJ. Welcome to the club. You may be pleasantly surprised at how much better mileage you get with the MJ. -meljr Thanks. It looks a little rougher now here in Alaska. I'm already surprised, although coming from a lifted brick on 33s with a big 6 and a lot of tools, the bar isn't very high. Semper Fi Marine! Best I can tell, I need to drop the starter for this and maneuver it around the exhaust. I need to know the thread pitch though.. nothing to fasten it on with. Naterenfo1
If I remember correctly, it takes 4 bolts and nuts to hold it in, the top two are darn close to 3.5" long, and the bottom ones should be M10x25 about an 1-1/2" long (I think thats a real bolt measurement...? lol) Hopefully that helps! Take a look at the front of the bell housing, you will be able to see the flywheel and thats where it goes, right on the front of the bellhousing. shouldnt have to undo/remove anything except the starter, which is 2 (18mm head) bolts. this was on my 2.8L, could be different for a 2.5. Good luck!

Good luck! I went ahead and did it yesterday, and somehow killed the starter. That's to be diagnosed tonight. On my 2.5, it's also four bolts, the top two were 1.5in, the bottom two were 2.5, but probably should have gone with three inch. Starter was one T12 inverted Torx, and one 13mm bolt. I don't think that was standard. :ack: Holes weren't threaded, that I could tell, so I just went with some Grade 5 bolts from a hardware store. Thunderbear
No kidding? Wow. Tailgate's just the main thing I need. Interior stuff I could use too. Window wipes Center console for bench Dash surround E brake parts... you know how it goes. The donor truck for my steering column and tranny is still out in Willow, and supposedly there's one for sale out by Nancy Lake.
akamcbird
i was running low on space and gave a bunch of parts to tyson, er..overdriven for a redo of his chopped xj. parts including the rear half of an '86 cab, rear interior bits, doors, rear flairs, etc. he was planing to ditch the fiberglass and go true cheromanche, but last i heard that mite not be happening. he may also still be over seas shootn bad guys. mite be worth a check, red int. parts. Thunderbear
Hahah.. the parts are red? That's what I'm trying to get rid of. :rotfl2: Red and blue are the two worst interior colors in history.
akamcbird
i kinda liked the red, kinda. when i got my '87 i was surprised to see a darker version. but it needed a few parts swapped out including the bench which made me feel 3' tall. with a few parts swapped from maroonish to red ('86), i was quite content. just needed a proper shifter knob, quik drive to seward for a rock that matches perfect ( you know what I'm talkn bout). some leftover stereo parts and all that is left is a full gauge set up, and a shifter boot and ill be set for the interior of that one. yes red most those parts came frommy '86 after it murdered a '94 honda. Thunderbear
So did your parts come from junkyard searches? Is it worth checkout out Northwest in town?
akamcbird
worth a phone call... most j/y don't carry much older than 10 years unless theres a good market. there are a few private lots full of jeeps, mostly out of town, usually contacts found on craigs. my parts come from mjs that are being crushed, you can get the whole rig free or pay for parts. the '86 i speek of was my first mj (50 mph tbone) forward of the seat was all a loss. saved part of the cab and some mj specific parts then turned the bed section into a trailer.
