Project Mild Junk, or MJ for short

Recommended Posts

Hey all, first off great site. I'm so glad to have found this place. It's like a support group for the MJ affliction, which I contracted as soon as I purchased mine in March '11. Well here's my starting point, a 4x4 89 Pioneer swb with a 2.5, ax5, and 4.10's. . It had less than 52,000 miles on it, now a little over 53,000. It belonged to an old farmer who would drive it about once a week. There is no rust underneath and overall it's in great shape. It will be a semi-daily driver and light work truck. I would like to lift it enough to give some good clearance to some 31's. I'll probably go with a 3.5" lift. I have an 89 XJ donor with a 4.0 and a lot of extra parts that I picked up for $350. Image Not Found First, I'm going to do a little swapping from the XJ, just cosmetic stuff at first. Wheels-

Had a little time to start stripping the donor today and found some little extras that I thought were kinda cool, like the factory digital clock.I also found the little under dash lights that illuminate the floor. They mount right under the dash, one for driver's side, one for passenger. Also two other lights, one for the cig. lighter hole, the other for the ash tray. Both of those seem kinda pointless, but I installed them in the MJ anyway, just 'cause. All were super simple as my MJ already had wires for these little lights from the factory. Here's one of the under dash lights. I also completely stripped the XJ of everything else I thought I could use or sell. Anybody near central NC need some good buckets?I like them but I need to keep the bench seat for the kids. I'm currently researching lifts. I want about 4" of lift and would like to keep it fairly economical.

So, how about giving me a shipping quote for the seats to Michigan? 48640, Price total? I want those type of seats but I will have them recovered in black.

Thanks!!

Little update. Thanks to anotherjeff's awesome thread, I visited the Winston-Salem Pull A Part yesterday and picked these up.

The V8 ZJ springs are going to be combined with 1.75" coil spacers up front, and I'm still trying to decide what I want in the rear. The WJ control arms are probably going on my wife's XJ. It has a 3" lift and 31's with the stock wheels. $60 for everything. :D

Had a little time today and wanted to see how much lift I would get from the ZJ coils. I started out at 18" from center of the wheel to the bottom of the flair.

Then I installed the coils from the 96 V8 ZJ along with another isolator pad in addition to my original. I was disappointed to find out that it only gave me one inch of lift, especially since half of that came from the isolator pad alone.

I was hoping for closer to 2 inches. This is how my truck sits now. Not much different than before, but I love the firmness of the ride with the ZJ coils.

I am in central NC, and make semi regular trips to Battle Creek, Mich. It might be possible for me to bring the seats up next trip if you wanted to work something out with ncm1. I'm not sure how badly you want them or how soon youll need them, but if all parties are flexable, it could be done. PM me if interested.

Scored some cool stuff for the MJ today. Got this off of a WJ for $16 at the Pull A Part.

Got these for $8 a piece so I can replace my tired of stockers. I have some vinyl mirror material I'm gonna try for the passenger mirror. We'll see how that works.

I hope to get started on this stuff tonight. :wrench:

Youre gonna have to tell me where these pull a part yards are in our area. I'm really wanting to do the WJ brake upgrade and $16 is a great price for the booster assy. Ive got a whole list of other stuff I want too.

And did you notice the thing about the seats and a possible sale. I could deliver them. The three of us would just need to work something out so nobody get stuck out $50 or stuck with seats they don't need. PM us or post up on here. Thanks.

Nice MJ & Welcome to the CC!

Got around to doing the mirrors today. I would recommend this to anyone still struggling to see out of the old MJ mirrors.

Were you struggling with the old ones because the mirror finish was bad, or are these longer than the originals?

I can't wait to see how the GC brake booster upgrade goes

Thanks. The driver's side mirror was loose inside the housing so it would not hold where I would set it, regardless of how I tried to set it. But what really sold me on the newer XJ mirrors is the significantly larger surface area of the glass itself. Much better field of view.

Thanks - I will follow your lead in this one and try them out on the 86

Picked up this little jewel yesterday at the JY from an 88 MJ Pioneer that just arrived. The truck is at the PullaPart in Winston. It has a great bed and tailgate and the bumper isn't too bad. The guy at the yard said it was driven in, unlike most of the stuff there.
