JOMJ87
OK i didnt put this in tech cause it isnt to technical but anyways....I have a choice to make and would like your opinions. My saga is my motor is shot and isnt going to last much longer also my clutch needs replaced and my slave cylinder as well so Should I A: replace with a 2.5 like it has maybe a newer version B: 4.0 (don't care about the horsepower gaines and all that much but they last forever) C: some kind of desiel maybe the CRD one if I can find one for a steal D: V-8 since they are easy to come by and work on OK a little background on what I am looking for. I am happy with my 2.5 and feel no need to boost up the power cause then I will brake more stuff but If its going to be cheaper and simple to swap I am game for it. Really the cheaper it is the happier my wife so in turn I am happier. Also not to be an @$$ but I would like peoples honest opinions on the subject and not what guys feel they like more for whatever the reason. M357.5
I like the diesel swap idea. A friend of my cousin has a 94 F150 2wd truck that he has swaped a Perkins 4 cyl industrial diesel into.......has lots of torque , will even light up the tires no problem. Its not in the same league as a power stroke or a duramax , but its surpriseingly driveable and gets great mileage. I am swapin in a 360 Dodge Magnum into my MJ this winter , but the little Perkins would be super cool. A guy on another site is going to be putting a VW 1.9L TDI in his CJ3B project....that might be cool too.
feerocknok
I vote V-8. A: If you want to get a Direct Port Injected 2.5, you'll probably have to find a donor. B: Same thing as with the 2.5. It'd be just as difficult and you'd have to swap the same things plus motor mounts. C: If you could get ahold of one, it'd be great, but $$ and effort would be up there. D: The easiest engine swap, I do believe, is to drop a carbed v-8 in. You connect about 3 wires and the engine runs. Also this is cheap. I don't imagine too many parts breaking, except maybe the 44 you're putting in, and some front axle parts. That's the way I see it, but any option would be a good one IMO. bigd44889
i would just rebild the one u got or swap in a 2.5 to replace it wiring is a pain in the a** u can get a rebilt 2.5 for a $1000 on ebay everyday
DirtyComanche
Cheapest would be to grab another 2.5 out of the boneyard, or maybe a jeep that's parked at wal-mart. I'd put a V8 in it. I bet you'll not regret it.

Pete M
I'd go with a newer 2.5L block like out of a TJ. It's a better block and it should go in with minimal hassle. If there's one thing I hate, it's overly complicated projects that end up taking forEVER to finish (if they ever do). Of course, that hasn't stopped me from starting them, but I hate them none the less. Simpler is better. :D And how is this not tech?
Oizarod115
2.5s are TANKS just like the 4.0s... ive rarely ever heard anyone complain about the lifespan or quality of the engine... just the minimal HP it puts out.. direct swap i'd probably go 2.5 for ease. then theres always v8 in a close second for ease of parts, work and reliability. aemsee
If you are basically happy with the 2.5, stick with it.
mjeff87
For simplicity's sake, I would just swap in another TBI 2.5 and call it good. You can swap in a later model MPI one complete but you'll need the whole harness and ECU (or you could use just a short block and reuse your top end). I grabbed a complete 2.5 from a guy on NAXJA (for free, but I had to drive 11 hrs to get it :D ) a couple summers ago....it's sitting in the garage up in PA waiting to go into mine when either 1) the original blows up, and/or 2) when it his 200K miles. I'm at 173K now, and no pending signs of explosion yet, except for a slapping timing chain that gets louder by the day  They really are bulletproof, like Oiz said. JOMJ87
Well mine has 220000 on it and runs still but the compression is below threshold and the motor just don't run the best at all. I guess the 2.5 it is and the reason I mentioned the newer MPI is because my friend accross the street might5 be doing a 4.0 swap and his motor only has 30000 miles on it  so if he does the swap then Ill get that if not I will start my hunt for a good one. Pete::: I don't know why I didnt think it was tech I wasnt doing anything technical so I just threw it in the pub????? i remember that next time. Pete M
Deciding which engine to run in your 'Manche is definitely technical. There have been other posts that were borderline, I just haven't been on top of it. A couple more weeks and I should have all the time in the world. :D

Cole psh, compression smercession... i can turn my brother's 4.0 over pulling on the serpentine with my hand  (220K miles of stock, 20k miles of stock gears with 33's, 2k miles of 4.88s with 35s) its taken its toll. still runs fine, and pretty quick for 35s too. (that is our next project. its dangerously close to its end i fear.)
Pete M
Yeah, compression isn't everything. Make sure all the fuel and spark delivery systems are good to go.
JOMJ87
OK the ECU might also be bad and everything is kinda scetchy with the electrical. I forgot to mention this before. BUT and this is good news for me MY buddy accross the street is doing the 4.0 swap adn will give me his drivetrain and wires and Computers and everything I need for a real good deal. Its the 91 motor and MPI with a bored out TB but other than that its stock and was bought new 4 yrs ago and only 30000 acctual miles on it. :brows:   :D What do you think of this swap. Pete M
If you get everything that's needed, then it's a really great swap. If you get most of what you need, then it's still a great swap, just you'll be spending more time in the junkyard. Nearly EVERYTHING changed electrical wise. Get yourself a factory shop manual! JOMJ87
He has one for his YJ and we are gutting it for ther swap so I should get it all. Will my guages work or will I have tio change them?? Will my trans and t-case work with it??? Will my fuse panels work or do I need his??? I am so excited to get this nice of a motor for such a good deal and even if I need stuff he needs to keep in he will be getting an 91-95 XJ for his swap so I will steal the stuff of that if it will work. I don't care to go to the JY i actually love going our u-pull-it is HUGE. Cole
JOMJ87
OK I still need answers for above questions and also will my trans bolt right up to the 91 motor??? And will my fuse boxes work?? And just for the info I am getting the complete motor and wiring harness and computer adn ETC ect for $500 seems like a good deal for a motor with only 35000 miles to me. pingpong
Heck for that price you could buy Pong's motor and tranny and t-case. I would even throw in a spare motor, and all the wiring you needed.

Cole There shouldn't be a problem with your trans and tcase as the block is the same, so your bellhousing will fit, and on and on and on. I believe Wranglers may be similar to XJs as having their gauges reverse polarity one year, not sure when. As for fuses, are you using his injection or yours? This one only has 35,000 miles on it and its not 2 states away it accross the street so I think its a decent deal for it that is a little lower price then I seen other places.
