Kenbob
I know the towing capacities for the 89 4.0 5 speed. I am wondering if the stock bumper is safe for towing 1500lb or less. Anyone have experience with this.
MiNi Beast
you should be able to handle 1500lbs no problem, just no tugging on it for like recovery purposes.
mvusse
The step bumpers seem to rust from the inside out. Outside looks fine, inside is rotted. Because of this I wouldn't trust it for anything heavier than a wheelbarrow.
flint54
:agree: Amen! My bumper looks pristine from the outside, but underneath indicates that the strongest layer is probably the paint. Better off, I think, is to mount a proper tow bar to the frame.
Oizarod115
in my southern truck, no rust issues with the rear bumper, i've pulled a 1000lb (ish) camper with no problems ~400 miles round trip. it seemed really solid. however rust and 20+yr old bumpers is a different story so each truck may perform differently now-days. JeffN
Rockauto.com sells a class III hitch for like $105. Not worth the risk of a bumper folding up on you

Kenbob
Thanks for the info....My bumper is rust free front/back inside out. Still might have to get a hitch as I am pulling a very small travel trailer and might need the hitch to get the right height. Thanks again all. dasbulliwagen
Duh, didn't see the front mount, try this link.http://hitches4less.com/jeep-truck-trailer-hitch.html You search for a Comanche, but it gives you a class 2 hitch for a J truck. I don't think it is the right hitch.
mkbruin
I posted a model number for a reese universal that fits the MJ (longbed) in a previous thread. There are no companies that build a hitch for the MJ's anymore.

It was rusted from the inside.

johnj92131
No rear hitches for the Comanche anymore. Every once in a while a NOS one shows up. Best to look for a used one. Or to have one built for you at a local shop. Should not be hard to build. Some one should post drawings of their class 3 hitch. JJ
MiNi Beast
yeah I prolly just inter-gate it into the rear bumper and go custom, just wanted one now to hole me over as undecided how I may go on the rear yet.
