I was getting tired of the Voyager and wanted something different, got this in trade for $200 worth of work. The "stealership" says The engine has a cracked head, and a scored cylinder wall, it originally went in for a bad head gasket. Plan is to sell the Voyager for $600, use the money to get this van up and running. The Astro has high miles, but is in very good condition. It has receipts for a new engine 60k mi ago and receipts for a rebuilt tranny and all service work done. Besides, this van is way better than my "soccer mom" looking Voyager and it is AWD.

ya, i'd take an awd astro over a voyager any day of the week.... it's too bad they don't make em anymore, i think if they did they'd still sell well.... good find, and if the motor is no good you can always rip out the awd stuff and swap it into an s10 or blazer and make a syclone/typhoon clone :brows:

What would make taking the running gear out of the Astro swapped into an S-10, a Cyclone or a Typhoon? Weren't S-10s and blazers available with this same running gear, or are you talking about adding a V-8 with it?

On a second note, I'm hoping the dealerships definition of a scored cylinder is different from mine. If that is the case, I plan to have the heads R&Rd, install new gaskets and call it good.

The dealer (Ford-PO had it torn down and diagnosed by them)) said it had a cracked head, I don't see any damage or anything that shows they did any real inspection on it at all. If they Magnafluxed it would I be able to see the dye?

I think they (Ford dealer) just wanted to sell the PO a new engine as that route would be much easier for the mechanic, and management.

Sooner or later somebody is probably going to ask why was a Chevy taken to a Ford dealer for repair? And that is because the only commercial mechanic in town wouldn't fix it because it is too old, makes for a liability on his part if he doesn't get paid. the next closest commercial mechanic is the Ford dealer 40+ miles away.

looks pretty darn clean. You should be able to tell if they pulled a head to check the cyl wall. Sounds like you called it right. Just trying to sell a new engine.

Caravans were available in AWD up to the advent of stow and go seating. Maybe 2001 or so? I had a 97 AWD T&C. With 4 snows it was a great winter vehicle.

They pulled the heads, but I can't tell how much they got into inspecting the heads and motor. Lately it's been REAL winter here and I haven't been able to do more in depth inspection on it. Besides, I really need to get the 88 Chief done so I can sell the Voyager then get this thing running.

When I say REAL winter I means blowing snow and single digits. Been a outside dog my whole life but have to draw the line somewhere. Last few days its warmed up enough to do some outside work, were having a 29 degree heat wave. :rotf: :rotf:

Oh yes,,, you need to get you a 4.3l v6 and slap in there.. the only dif in a 4wd s-10 and the typhoons and cyclones were an intercooled turboed vortex 4.3, cv axles in the front, instead of u-joint axles, and the AWD transfer case, which the cyclones, olds bravada, and your astros all shared (minus the turbo).. Only thing you need to do is slap a turbocharged 4.3 and youd have the same platform as the cyclone.. I have a 93 4wd Blazer I've had since i was 17 that I'm planning on finding the same transfer case and axles you have and doing a SBC swap in.. One day when I win the lotto!! =)

blazers and s10's never came from the factory with awd, only part time 4x4, but the syclone/typhoon uses the same 700r4/4l60e trans & tcase as the awd vans... the awd swap is simple, it's just like swapping from a np231 to a np242 on an xj/mj... however, unlike jeeps it can't easily be done on a 2wd truck cause the frame and suspension is different.... the turbo stuff however is a different story.... the factory 4.3 turbo stuff is super rare and even harder to find.... last i check a set of used factory syclone turbo manifolds was going for almost $700 on ebay, and noone makes aftermarket ones..... but even without the turbo, an awd s10 or blazer would be be pretty neat.....
