It's getting really cold here so, I've been concentrating on doing things I can finish before hypothermia sets in. I've been starting it every other day or so and letting it warm up so I can keep the battery charged. We had a Blizzard here last Friday and just before I went to work I reached in and started the MJ and then went off to do a little shoveling. As I walked away I could smell something burning and smoke coming out from under the hood. I reached in and shut it off and poped the hood. The serpentine belt was broke and laying in tight little curls. I started to turn pulleys thinking I probably seized a bearing. The water pump pulley wouldn't turn and was a nice shade of black from rubber off the belt. I opened the resevour for the radiator and stuck my finger in. It was pure ICE. The dumba$$ I bought it from had filled it with WATER... Maybe I'm the dumba$$ for not checking, but who would live in Michigan and have water in there cooling system and in December.. Well, I had to get to work so I couldn't fix it on Friday. Saturday I drove 50 miles (one way) to get a friends heater. Picked up 2 gallons of antifreeze and took the almost new serpentine belt off my parts comanche. I removed all the hoses and took them in the house to thaw out. The heater did the trick and I had about 2 gallons of rusty water in the pan. I refilled it with 50/50 antifreeze for about 1.5 gallons and another half gallon of pure antifreeze to make up for what I'm sure is some water left in the system. I'm not seeing any leaks and the temp is holding just under 210. I'm not ready to say I dodged a bullet, because sometimes water in the oil doesn't show up right away. But how stupid is this? When It gets warmer I'll have to flush the whole system because it looked pretty rusty. :mad: Mac... Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I ran it idling for well over an hour then shut it off and felt/checked the dip stick for any signs of foaming or increased oil level and all seems ok. No external leaks. Ran it again today. RLCollins Posted December 19, 2009 Share Posted December 19, 2009 Was the motor cast iron?? maybe you got lucky. I won't know anything about that, It does not FREEZE much in South Florida. But we do use antifreeze for the HEAT. It should be snowing about now where you at, this is from the storm that left Florida soaking. I had recently changed out the T stat and all I can think is that I 50-50'd, 50-50 anti freeze!! :nuts: :nuts: :nuts: I always park drive into my garage. This time I backed in and that combined with the sub zero temps that night froze it or at least turned it to a slushie!! I burst the upper rad hose, but all else was fine.
