dasbulliwagen
You need to start a thread in the projects section too!!!!!
Pete M
We hit the bumper on the ground a number of times at the last event due to "yumps" - its like a mound that's larger than a speed bump, that you get some air off of. The bed comes down and slaps the top of the yump. A shorter bed will stop that from happening. Ah, that makes sense. The stock bumper hangs down pretty darn low. Thought about simply trimming and re-locating the bumper up higher into the sheetmetal?
sureshot007
We are considering the bumper relocation as an option as well. So what's so bad about the D35? Everyone says they are terrible, but what breaks on them? You have to realize that I am running 14-15" wheels with car sized tires (205/60), and will be running on loose surface (dirt, gravel, snow), so it's not like it will have a huge load on it, or crawling with huge tires. I realize the D44 will be better, but I just have a hard time believing that the D35 is made of glass. I will start a project thread as soon as we nail down a definite game plan and start working on it - but that probably won't be for another month. And I can always use the help in sourcing cheap parts, or if anyone is interested in some level of sponsorship, I'm all ears :)
camjeep3
normally the shaft will give and it will go bye bye with your wheel attachet to i... also for your bed being to long you could do a bed bob :dunno: lots of rockcrawling guys do it to gain more clearance in the back
WahooSteeler
why not ditch the bumper and do a roll pan? :brows:
Pete M
What doesn't break on them? :dunno: Mine threw a bunch of ring teeth and bent into a smile from massive 30" tires on the street (2wd at the time). Jumping would definitely put too much stress on the weak housing and tubes. An 8.8 can be found for pretty cheap and gives you strength, 4.10s and disk brakes.

It's getting really tiresome............ Plenty of D44's and 8.8's break too for no obvious reasons too if you care to look around. Use the D35 and see what happens. Might just surprise you w. it's reliability. They are not terrible and/or made of glass as everyone says. For your application it will prolly be fine. Give it a shot, don't listen to the standard old line. :D
Pete M
I stand by my statement in this case. The housing is a known weak point (and a tweaked housing can cause some of the other common failures) and he's jumping the truck. If you find a Dana 35 with 4.10s and it's dirt cheap, fine, go for it. Just be sure to fab up a truss to help keep it straight. But I figure if you want more power, gearing is the way to get more power to the ground, and if you're going to buy a new axle with better gears, you might as well invest your money into a better axle.

Listening to the good advice Pete has is not tiresome, it is smart. Your incorrect response and having you whining like a little girl is tiresome too... :fool: Money spent on a 8.8" axle is smart. Just weld the tubes to the housing and add a good truss. Any money spent on a D35 is a waste and it will break. It also bends really easy.

I KNOW Pete gives excellent advice and I was just yanking his chain. Someone has to do it. EDIT: BTW, I pretty sure I scored a MJ D44 for myself today thanks to Pete and his car-parts.com site. $175, 3.55 ratio, and not too far away. The yard sent me the tag numbers and they cross correctly. He's also sending a pic of the diff cover Monday so I can be abslutely sure before going to pick it up.

Somebody has to yank yours from time to time again too... :rotf: Got ya. Pat's MJ D44 is supposed to have rear discs according to his sig for the last few months. You should ask him about the swap and get pictures to prove it.
TNT
I did take a couple 10/325 Norco's, a couple Valiums, a Flexural and an Amitriptyline. I washed it down with a 32 ounce Brandy slush with a couple extra shots added for the fun factor. I'm happy and smiling. :brows:  Edit: Time for a refill. :D

And here I am stuck w. weak-a$$ Lortabs and Miller High Life for my acheing shoulder. :fs1: As far as disks on the 44, since I already have disks on the 35 all I have to do is p/u a couple of D44 backing plates from TeraFlex and swap everything over. And regear to 4.11 of course. :D And you're right, I do need my chain yanked periodically too.

Call me, I got a windshield for you :D My shop is in Depew, I have parts, but not any 2.5 parts :( But, I think we can change that in time. PM me and I'll pass on my phone # and shop location. And don't even think of cutting that perfect bed :fs1:
mvusse
If you cut up a perfectly god bed, I will personally hunt you down and smack you upside the head! Fabricate a dual shock set up for the rear axle and using stiff shocks might fix the bumper problem.
cherokee
Oh yeah, trying to figure out how to use a rear swaybar of some sort might be a worthwhile project too.
maddzz1
Since its an 86, isnt there a chance he has an AMC20 rear end? or did they not come with the 2.5?
Pete M
According to the dealership brochure, the 2.5/stick could get the metric ton package. The 2.5/auto could not.
