bigalpha
What are the stock speaker sizes for the doors? 5 1/4 or 4"?
Pete M
Door speakers are 5 1/4"
bigalpha
Cool, thanks. I figure while the Dremel is charging, I'll go get some new speakers. The ones in there suuuuuuuck.
garmj
Get 2 Pair there is a place to mount another pair behind the seat in the B pillar. Wires are already there. It sounds a lot better with 4 speakers.

Is it a lot more noticable in the MJ?
mfpdm
The b-pillar mounts are actually for 4x6's. Hard to find good ones that size. I'm looking at the Infinity reference series 4x6's to go in mine. They sound so good for such a small speaker. Will match them up with the 5 1/4s for the doors and maybe the 3's for the dash knee board. These are very clear crisp sounding speakers and will be just fine with the factory stereo and will fit the stock locations without butchering the trim.

I'm retarded. So the wiring to the door is green and black. The wires for the speaker are black and black w/ white stripe. Which wire in the door is which? Pete M
I had 4x6s back there. Then switched to 6x9s in little boxes. Then added a small 10 sub. Then removed the 6x9s. Having 5 1/4s in the doors (actually they are component 5.25s with separate tweeters) and a small sub in the back turned out the best for me.
johnnyc
You can put 6.5" speakers in the doors. You just have to drill some new mounting holes. I put some 4x6 Alpine speakers in the pillars. I don't think they make these speakers anymore though.
bigalpha
Thanks for the suggestions. I think for now, I'll just stick with the 4.5" in the doors. There was a bigger speaker in the driver door, but it stuck out into the door panel all funny. The PO had wired some other speakers behind the seats, but they were taken out before I bought it. The little 4x3 speakers in the B pillar (they are there), don't work; presumably because he wired the rear speakers differently. Worse part is, it's not even a nice set of speakers or head unit. I just went and picked up some Sony Xplode speakers from Wally World since I'm not building some high end system.
Comanche County
For 4x6's for the pillars grab the infinity front door speakers out of a Grand Cherokee at a JY. I pulled a pair of nice Cerwin-Vegas our of a ZJ. Also, do take your time and do not pry out the back panel or the B Pillars of your MJ. There's a couple of tricky screws to locate and you'll be tempted to pull and pry. Just find all the attaching points and take your time. The pillars will practically fall out if you do it right. Just replaced mine....kind of a pain, since I had to pull out my interior roll cage and I did break a couple of plastic peices.... :fs1:

I don't think they make these speakers anymore though. Crutchfield sells (or used to sell) the correct speakers for that location, which are 4" round speakers on a 4" x 6" rectangular plate. I bought a set a couple or three years ago. Havn't looked recently to see if they still have them, but it's easy to make your own. In general, round speakers work and sound better than ovals (IMHO). bigalpha
Ah, good ole Crutchfield. Always have what ya need. I'll keep an eye out for ZJs next time I hit the PaP. The panels that cover the hole that the speakers sit in are already broken and siliconed back into place. Will a 4x6 fit in that spot pretty easy? I assume you just remove the 4x6 plate and the new speaker should just pop right in.

I just replaced mine and when I pulled the passenger side I noticed it felt kind of light. Turns out the magnet had actually fallen off the stock speaker and was just sitting in the bottom of the door. :shake:

Ive only had the panels off once; I know there is a bracket that holds the speakers in, not sure how they mount w/out the bracket

Comanche County
The hole pattern is the industry standard for 4x6s I believe. I matched to it to every 4x6 at Best Buy but didn't get any because they were too expensive. Any 4x6 should go right in there. Some are actually 4"x6" speakers, some are smaller speakers with a 4x6 plate and hole pattern. My cerwin-vegas that I put in were actually too deep by about 1/4" and the magnet rubbed the outer sheet metal of the truck so I fanagled a cardboard spacer for them.
