jtdesigns
I wouldnt spend the big cash on a Rem shotgun unless it was a 1100.. Thats just me though..
sinkrun
The 500 has the most choices for pistol grips, barrels, combat stocks etc. With the price of ammo who`s going to use much 3 1/2 heck around here most calibers are sold out mainly the odd or high power stuff. Check ebay for combat stock and pistol grip options and http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewIt ... =127501385
Comanche County
My first gun was a Mossberg 500 20 gauge, got it when I was 11 years old and 23 years later I still go hunting with it. Its beat to hell, rusty, and still shoots straight.
Akula69
I swear by the Remington...its a good all around weapon. We stil have them issued as a riot control weapon at the department. Reliable and durable...Mine had a bunch of sand in the action after Katrina and still functioned (grudgingly). Besides, when the country goes to hell in a hand basket you can always shorten the barrel and do the Mad Max thing.... :brows:

Cheech
I bought a new 870 Express last spring and love it so far. I use it for skeet, birds, even a couple groundhogs :D. I bought the 3" chamber and the 28" barrel. The only thing I regret is that I didn't buy the 3 1/2" chamber.
CWLONGSHOT
I just spent about 20 Min's writing a long and informative post only to have it again lost as the site didn't keep me logged on to register the post.... :fs1: :fs1: :fs1: Suffice it to say, I know firearms better than I know Comanches. Buy the Remington and forget the imposters.. CW
deziped
If your gonna take it fishing with you, buy a used anything and whack the barrel and saw off the stock where you want it. Sling it over you shoulder or throw it in the bottom of the boat. No loss if you drop it in the river. Oh, use slugs if you run into a barrh, bird shot won't even knock the ticks off of em. Carl'sMJ
Do you shoot left or right hand? The safety on the Mossberg 500 is more user friendly for lefties. Small detail... that being said I have used and like both the Remington 870 and Mossberg 500.

Gottch.. But I still stand behind the I'd buy it if it were a 1100.. I really enjoy my 835 and I don't mind to stomp or crawl through the mud with it. CWLONGSHOT
Converting a RH 870 safety to LH operation is NOT a complicated process. http://www.davesmetalworks.com sells the safety you need. Also Midway carries a left handed safety for Remington shotguns. It is product # 463939. many gunsmiths have been doing this conversion for many years. Cost should be under $50 bucks. CW PS: Here is one I tricked out! :brows:
brdhntr
the 870 without a dought. it's been around forever and has been one of the most popular and most dependable guns ever offered. the 500 and 835 are good guns, but the 870 is far more popular and dependable. you will also find more accessories for the 870 as well. whowey
If he is gonna hack it up and throw it in his boat or truck... the 500 hands down. If he wants to keep it and treat it well.. paying for the 870 makes sense... I have a 870 Wingmaster... and its a great gun. But beating the heck out of it will never happen. If I was looking a gun to do that with, a 500 or even a Maverick 88 makes alot more sense at least from a financial standpoint.

I understand your thinking, but for me a gun is something I will be staking my life on. Its gonna be the best I can attain and its going to be cared for as it will care for me in the long run. I know mine is, and I assume your life is worth more to you than a $200 walmart mossberg shotgun. CW
brdhntr
well he is looking at the 870 express, not a wingmaster. the express is actually going to be a little more durable as far as the action and barrel than a 500. the 500 has a shiny, smooth blueing on it. the 870 has a matte black textured finish on it. the price is more comparable to the 500 as well. the wingmaster is a much higher end gun. :smart: if he does want to hack it up, the 870 has more possibilities then the 500 or 835. these options can be found much sheaper for an 870 than a mossberg as well since the 870 is so popular. it would be pretty cheap to mess around with an 870.
