jtdesigns Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Couldn't get under it to see much but from the specs what you think gears it should have?
jeepdoggydogB Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 3.73's I think, Pete or Eagle know this one for sure. Edit: I am wrong. this has some pretty good stock specs http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=135806
Pete M Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 No one knows for sure. It's an 86, and if I've learned anything about 86s, it's that you can't reliably predict what gears they will have. :(

mjeff87 Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Not quite, the 4:56's came in 87-89 XJ/MJ models with the 2.5/AW4 combo (only) JT, that axle may have CV-jointed shafts in the front instead of u-jointed ones (if that's a concern to you). Jeff
shelbyluvv Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Not quite, the 4:56's came in 87-89 XJ/MJ models with the 2.5/AW4 combo (only) Jeff I got a D30/D35 combo out of a 86 XJ, 2.8, 5 speed with 4:56's. You never know what you will find under a XJ until you look.
mjeff87 Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 ....I stand corrected ;) I've only ever seen 4 of them in my life, one was the 87 XJ that donated it's D30 to my MJ, one 89 XJ in Harry's U-pull it, one 87 MJ currently sitting in my junkyard that I stripped bare, and Jerry's 87 or 88 MJ (tjbliley). Like Pete says, ANYTHING is possible. Jeff
Eagle Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 I don't know for sure, but I do know that I have the hulk of an '86 XJ 2.8L automatic here, and that definitely has 3.73 gears. That would be my first (and last) guess.

Dealer books said gear options were 3.31's, 3.54's, and 4.10's (but not telling you which combo got which gears) Parts book only lists part numbers for 3.08's, 3.55's & 4.11's. Only thing I'm sure of in 1986 is Metric Ton MJ's got AMC 20's, with 4.10's. Other than that, I'm not even gonna guess. :smart:
