I had to say goodbye to an old friend...

I had to put my friend of 13 years down today. I got Princess 13 years ago for my wife as a anniversary gift. She has been with us through 5 cross country moves within that time. She was supposed to be my wife's cat but she never left my side and slept on my pillow every night.

Late last year she came down with kidney disease. The vet figured she only had a month max to live. The old girl refused to stop fighting and made it another 6 months. She sure was a fighter!

It was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. But, at least now I know the pain is gone.

Rest in peace baby, I will miss you...

I'm sorry for your loss.

I would have never believed how much a member of the family could be missed until I lost several myself. My wife and I have been able to feel better about it by getting a good photo of the pet and adding it to the wall of family photos (where it should have been to begin with  )

our oldest cat was my wife's pet long before we ever met. She made it to 21 and just flat out ran out of gas and we had to put her down a couple years ago. She now rests in an urn on the headboard of our bed. It was the most sorrowful thing I've ever experienced, and I empathize with you and your family but you did what was best for your friend.

It takes awhile but it does get better, then eventually you start to remember very fondly the sweet and funny moments you all shared together.

Peace.

Jeff

Sad news to hear. I feel for you. Putting down a best friend is not an easy thing to do, but when their suffering is too great, it's for the better. I've been there myself, and this really tugs at the heart for me. I truly am sorry for your loss.

Thanks fellas. I am doing better with it. I knew it had to be done to make her stop hurting. My wife is taking it pretty hard but she will be ok in a few days.

I think the hardest part was the kids. Dakota (10) grew up with her. They were pretty close. He showed what kind of man he was going to be Wednesday night. He sat down with my wife and explained to her that it needed to be done and it was for the better. I was so proud to call him my son. What a strong little man. I guess him being the man of the house during all my deployments is coming through.

Shelby (4) is a little different. It is a hard thing to explain to someone so young. She is still waiting for her to come home. I just told her she was with Jesus and she is playing in heaven. She then asked if Princess took a plain to Heaven... She is such a sweet little girl. :rotf:
