Wheeling with a cap?

I'm considering getting a cap for my MJ .... I love the practicality it adds to the truck .... but I'm not sure how it could be to wheel with it on. I really only wheel a handful of times per year - the rest of the time I use the truck to run errands and go fishing/camping.

I've never seen any wheeling pics with caps on. Anyone do it? What would be the concerns?

What do you guys think?

I usually have a cap on my truck. I take it off when I go wheeling. Actually, I also take off the tailgate and loose all unnecessary weight out of the back carrying just tools, fluids and spare tire.

Is your cap fiberglass or aluminum?

About how much does a fiberglass cap weigh? I can get one for about $20 bucks - it needs some attention, but its not horrible. I'm concerned about it being too heavy for me to remove by myself.

Mine is a fiberglass LWB topper and it is heavy and awkward to put on yourself, but it can be done. I can do on my own, but it is only because I have no one else to help. The LWB topper on a lifted MJ is a two man job, I am just asking for a pulled muscle & damage to my sheetmetal. - Rich

Man, NO way I can take my Leer top off and on by myself w/o help. It takes three average guys (or maybe two Bama Bubbas) to do it manually; it's about 450#. I rigged a come-along block and tackle on a cross rafter in my garage, back under it, hook up straps, and hoist it off.

Mine is fiber glass. I have removed and installed it by myself once, but it is too bulky to do so easily. With another person helping it's a breeze. Weighs maybe 100 pounds.

I used to help my buddy with the hard top on his TJ. My cap weighs about half of the TJ hard top.

 that is heavy! Mine (only a guesstimate) is around 250#. I do plan on making a garage/shop lift for it as well.

Hornbrod, any chance I could get you to pm me some basic plans based off your set up - if you get a chance :D . I have been looking through the Grainger catalogue for some time trying to figure out a cheap solution  . TIA - Rich

I put mine on in the summer for 4wheeling and overnight trips to sleep in so I don't have to set up a tent, I just throw an air mattress in the back and it works great, But I make sure to strap down the tools still. As for loading/unloading, Ive never had a problem by myself, Even with 4.5" of lift, But I suppose a truck high dock and a forklift help with that. :D :brows:
