robfg67
If anyone read the thread Question on rear axle upgrade they are familiar with the story...I bought a rear axle from eBay for $5 and the front axle for $250 (from same guy-Jeeps Unlimited in Providence, RI. Both came from a '94 Cherokee and have 4.10 gears. Front: Dana 30 High pinion - reverse cut - 27 spline, 1.16" diameter shafts, 7.13" ring gear & 5-260x u-joints- this axle is vacum non-disconnect. 500 MJ
... and THAT is why I hate road salt. They should clean up OK. Sandblasters work the best. It's gonna take some time though... Get them clean BEFORE you try to loosen any bolts!

offroader461
wow thats a ton of rust...probably couldve found a better front axle for cheaper but can't beat $5 for the rear LOL
robfg67
I knew that there would be rust, and I'm not happy about it, but I'll put in the time to de-rust and prime & paint. Am I in trouble with the front shock mount-it looks like its rusted through. Do these have to come off anyway for the MJ shock mounts? If not, then can I take the shock mounts off of the MJ and weld ono this axle?
FxRacing282
i live here in new england, which is part of the "rust belt" of America . and those don't look that out of shape for a 14 year old truck exposed to NE. as for the mounts go. if you are going through the time to rid the metal of its natural process of deteriation (rust). cut em all off, put new ones on it. bring it to a trusted welder and give him a 6pack and a jelly roll of cash. the stub shafts as i call them. which is what i call the axle shaft that is between the wheel and u joint looks fairly rough. and the ears look kinda gnarly. i have no idea of your budget on this but its probabally not a bad idea to just get new axle shafts. but if its a off road rig then who cares. but its well worth the $255+ shipping. heck i just paid $200 for a chevy 10 bolt 8.5 front axle for my truck. robfg67
FxRacing282, where should I get new shock mounts? Would a welder create new ones out of weld stock? What about axle shafts? Bone yard or dealership?
FxRacing282
a lot fo the guys around here just look around on the web or go to the dealer to get new mounts. you may be able to find a welder who will make them but if you give him the mounts and tell him where you want them its gonna be a little cheaper on that bill. I'm not to familiar with mass, but if you take 495N to 125N and then RT4 east in nottingham there is a welding shop that i have heard good things about. axle shafts i would not go to the dealer. i work at a garage and also go to a vocational garage for school and dealer stuff is big money. you can get same or better (or less) quality from places that are going to specialize in these axles. I'm sure someone on here who has done it before can help you out. there are a couple guys on here in mass with big mj's. so just check your phone book for welding and give the people a call and get to know them and decide if they are someone you want to risk your life with. JeepcoMJ
great deal on the rear axle. sorry to say, but the front axle is about worthless unless you can fabricate. it's best to pull the gears from the front axle and put them in another axle. your unit bearings are likely shot, I bet the brakes are close to junk, it will need new ball joints, and ALL new seals. new Ujoints will be needed, good luck getting the stabilizer and trackbar off too. it needs new shock mounts (at the very least). you will also need to inspect the coil spring buckets...that's by far the worst rust in that area I've ever seen. your lower control arm mounts probably have many many small holes in them, and will likely be junk. all of that can be taken off of your comanche's axle, but you'll need a plasma cutter or something of that sort. I'd build all new mounts for the axle, raise the lower mounts up to behind the axle so it doesn't catch on them offroad, raise the UCA mounts up, and give myself some free lift with raised coil buckets too. also a relocated trackbar mount so that it maintains proper geometry, and an OTK steering setup. robfg67
...and other than that how did you like the play Mrs. Lincoln? JeepcoMJ, thanks for your opinion/advise-I really didn't know any better when I picked it up. The brakes are junk and your right about the u-joints, ball joints & mounts-they are no good either! I'm sure a good shop would charge in the neighborhood of $500 to "fix" this axle. Would the 4.10 gears fit into my stock Dana 30 front axle-perhaps, that's the way to go? If not, I'll call this joker and see if I can get my money back. CW, how much did you want for your front axle?
Sir Sam
.......I'll call this joker and see if I can get my money back. LOL. You saw the axle when you picked it up. maddzz1
Rob, you may have a shot at returning the axle. In your other thread you posted that he said it had the larger u-joints and if it has 260 u-joints they are not the larger ones he said. You also said he posted the brakes are good and they may not be. Are They?
cocco78
Wow, that front axle is way to far gone to make it worth while! Just by looking at it I'd say all the mounts need to be cut off and replaced. And yeah, probably new ball joints, unit bearings, u-joints, and probably axle shafts! Oh and new brake disks, doesn't look like they are turnable! I bet it would cost at the very least $750 to get that axle into shape with replacing everything an new brakets! Um, if you already have an axle under your MJ just take the gears and carrier out of this axle and pay a shop to put them in your axle, will probably need to buy an install kit with new seals and bearings. But used gears are very hard to setup correctly! But if you want to fix that rusty axle look into this http://www.ballisticfabrication.com/XJ- ... -1542.html Balistic fab has by far the best prices and service out there. I have ordered many things from them and they always ship very fast and are great to deal with..
