DansGreyMj
i heard that gcs have a better d30 and i wanted to swap in a non cad anyways would it bolt straight up or would i have to make any mods
mjeff87
AFAIK, they're the same animal....but the ZJ tie rod and drag link are thicker than XJ/MJ. But, they would all be non-disco, and 297x joints in them, unless they are CV shafts Jeff
pingpong
They are exactly the same. I am not sure about the u-joint thing though.
Pete M
Are you asking about ZJs or WJs?
BRC 88MJ
ZJ D30 is a low pinion design. Some (V8 mainly) used CV-joints instead of u-joints in the axleshaft. Otherwise, they are the same.
Bounty Hunter
ZJ D30 is a high pinion, same as most all but the newest XJ's. Many had CV axleshafts, easily replaceable with the ujoint axleshafts. It'll bolt right in. I've got a similar question, I just picked up a HP D30 non-disco with 4.10 and CV axlshafts, anybody know what it could have been out of? My quess would be something with a 4banger, but I thought no ZJ would have a 4banger. Maybe a 2.5L XJ with the 242?
mjeff87
prolly an 84-85 XJ with the 228/229 TC.
pingpong
More then likely It could have been any XJ with a 242 t-case or as Jeff said an early model XJ. One way to tell is the early model xj's SOME used regular 6 point bolts
Bounty Hunter
One way to tell is the early model xj's SOME used regular 6 point bolts  On what? The bolts on his D30 look like all late-model D30's I've seen, but it has the early bolt-on caliper bracket instead of the later 1-piece knuckle/bracket. pingpong
I have seen 2 D30's that appeared to be un altered in the local j-yard with 6 point bolts holding the unit bearing in. These were CV shaft equipped xj's. You are also right about the different style calipers too.
minydigger
My 94 ZJ limited has a low pinion w/ cv axles.
whowey
More then likely It could have been any XJ with a 242 t-case No, my 88 with the 242 has regular old joints. Gotta go with Jeff here. Early XJ, with the full time case. BTW, my ZJ with the 249(full-time) has CV joints on the front axle.
rejeep
The ZJ's & TJ's are LP.. XJ & YJ are HP
