Another Suspension topic....
JeepcoMJ replied to whatis42's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
i use Simple Green concentrate on everything. from seats to degreasing engines. the stuff's a miracle! if you use concentrate you'll get everything off. don't get the scented stuff though, it's too strong of a scent even in a mix -
nope, it's MPFI. I got 22 mpg on my first tank with the new engine. If you drive it right in a camaro they get up to 30 mpg highway..but with a heavier car, bigger tires, and 4wd I think I'm doin good at 20 to 22. haha, when we had all this terrible weather, I was driving it to and from work (45 min.) in 4wd @ 45 to 50 mph and still getting almost 15 mpg! love it!
-
or buy a renault cherokee or comanche. my dad's gets anywhere from 25 to 35 mpg depending on weather and driving. i think the worst he's ever gotten was 21 mpg with that thing pushing 27" tires with a cracked precup on the head and in 4wd pulling a trailer. those lil 4 cyl renaults get damn good mileage...but they're a terror to keep together unless you know what you're doing (we've learned..)
-
well kassidy if your engine ran right...maybe you'd get some gas mileage. that 24 seconds to 60...wow. i'm actually impressed believe it or not..

speedo drives are all in the t-case on xj's and mj's. unless it's 2wd. then it's on the tailshaft housing. the reason that I suggested switching the tranny is that for example, I cannot use the electronic speedo on my ax5 and it's t-case because the speedo drive is different. however, all you would have to switch for your manche to put it in if you have the TH350 would be the speedo drive (speed sensor), and still the entire harness from the new-school xj.

fix it with a cherokee engine harness and hood, and all the melted parts. best way to do it and it's WORTH IT

gas mileage and big tires...go with a 3-something. the guy's dumb. I've got 3.72 or 3.73 gearing in my truck i guess, and with 31x10.50 tires and my camaro engine, i'm getting 20 mpg at speeds of 65 to 75 mph. the trick is to keep the RPM's low...which isn't all that easy if you have a 4-banger or a 2.8. the 4.0 and 3.8 camaro engines have more than enough power in 5th gear/overdrive to coast along. it just takes some gentle driving to get mpg outta it. but on the same notion, Pete is correct 100% about bigger tires = worse gas mileage. that's FACT and the guy should just live with it or go buy a f*ing kia.

I'd presume they're the same, but if not then you'll have to worry. see, different years of different vehicles could have a different firewall connector on the harness (by firewall connector I mean the wiring connector that connects the engine harness to the interior harness). I just wanted to heads up you so if they are different you know what's coming. I doubt if they would be between the cherokee and comanche, but i can basically guarantee they would be between the wrangler and the mj. the colors would probably be the same intra wrangler-comanche, but the connector end would most likely be different. your motor swap IS a great idea, so don't doubt that. but for a engine harness, get one from a cherokee. only way to do it with minimal issues.

that's an AW4. it has snow on it...but that's the one i just got for my xj from the junkyard. if yours looks like this it's an AW4
-
you'd have to use the ENTIRE harness out of a newer xj...the dashes don't just bolt in and hook up to the original wiring. and you'd have to have the speed sensor for your transmission, or just swap in the tranny and such with it's speed sensor. i believe you have the peugot correct?

wonderful! I was gonna contradict the "flipping the axle giving you more reverse theory"..but i just wised up and did the geometry, the specific reason that it would reverse is that by flipping the axle the differential would then be on the opposite side, and while the driveshaft would be spinning the same, where the diff would have been spinning towards the front of the car in forward gears before, it would now be spinning toward the rear of the car in forward gears. yay for math! haha, a few more years of college should wise me up a bit to not make dumb assumptions again!

that's the color my cabriolet was. hated that too. really, i think i just hate blue! some blues are nice...but i prefer black and white myself. or white and black. or maroon. or just plain black. or....
-
 i really want a cheromanche now...
-
nice Maveric, i actually like that. i added you on myspace btw...my name's Pat. now you have someone to read your bulletins :D i've never actually seen that color before...although I have seen the light grey that jeep offered and the charcoal grey. that looks like their light grey...it had sorta a bluish tint to it.
-
dark or light first of all, second of all, why blue? i had a cherokee with the light blue, and i hated the color. that's the color of the interior in my truck and i HATE it. then pop's MJ is dark blue, and it looks like @$$ we're goin with a similar paint job to THE YAK'S with a black upper l and lower body and a charcoal center of the body. i HATE jeep colors besides black and maroon...their white was even a wierd white. to each his own i guess

my bro's 4.0 is really about a 4.3. it was bored by the previous owner. plus we built a cold air intake, bored the intake and throttle body, and he got one of those electric turbos on it. so it's not stock, and he has 31x10.50 tires on that truck with a 4 inch lift. loves to lay into it :D we're currently looking for a 8.8 or dana 44 rear end for it.

yea i like cw's setup, but that setup would affect cooling enough that I wouldn't feel comfortable...well, unless I switched the camaro fans for the 3.8 v6 in my truck to work with a switch rather than the computer. I'd rather be too cool with that setup than heating up...and a big winch cuts down on cooling when it's as hi as CW's. I like the behind-the-scenes look of the factory one. plus i've already cut my frame to fit the a/c pump in on the engine, and with the v6 I have the advantage of room up front. well, underneath the 4.0 radiator and custom header panel I built. I could do it easier than most i think in regards to room.
-
i assumed as much. i did see one bumper with the hole cut for the winch, but nothing special on it otherwise. no winch behind it though :(. doing that mod doesn't sound too particularly hard...i may just decide to do it as I enjoy the stock look of my truck, but welcome the idea of being able to "help myself out".

welcome

i work alot with snowmobiles...and i've done alot of fiberglass work as such. i've also seen and repaired crappy fiberglass work. as such, i no longer enjoy fiberglass...it sucks. doesn't help that i get rashes from working with fiberglass...then again, who doesn't? and welding wouldn't be a big deal. i'd keep the design the same way though, as changing it would result in having to change the flares to fit...and that's extra work i don't want to do. at least you could bend 90% of it then change it up by hand a bit...it's a better option than patching I think. i'd rather patch/adapt 3 or 4 large areas than a bunch of little ones.
-
i disagree with you Pete...if they were making enough of the bedsides, you KNOW there would be a market. mass production would lessen the price...so I'd want metal, as I could just replace them when they rust anyways. and while you could do MOST of the the sides from a flat sheet, you wouldn't be able to get the ridge where the fender flairs bolt onto. that'd be the worst part to make, and they're always gone on the truck beds. i wouldn't want aluminum or stainless. the metals are different than the original box and it would have funk corrosion. fiberglass would be okay...that way at least when it gets cracked or hit you can just glass it up and be done. but i'd rather pull dents than refiberglass....
-
yea but with the xj one you will have to redo some of the interior harness (if you swap that) to work your b pillar lights, and your taillights. if you can find an mj, that's the way to go. if you find an xj, it's still a pretty good alternative
-
we broke one on the street in my bro's 4.0. just removed the rear driveshaft, and diff cover, pulled out all the pieces then put it in 4 wheel and drove it home FWD style :D just swapped in a spare d35 we had and were done with it.

rear main still leaking
JeepcoMJ replied to 89eliminator's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
the rear main is a PITA because it goes AROUND the crankshaft. to do the one in the 4.0, you have to pull the pan, then you have to pull the seal (I believe it's a 2 piece seal?) the top part of the seal is the worst part as you can't move the crank downwards unless you unbolt the mains, and all the accessories and timing chain. so to get the seal out you have to push up on it then pull it around the top of the crank and downards. then you have to slide the new one in but keep it from getting folded or screwed up in any way. one f*up will screw ya. then you have to put it back together...keep in mind there will still be oil dripping down from the block so you have to wipe down the surface for the pan gasket...and wipe...and wipe...and wipe again, until it's either all out or you just want the damn thing back together. then there's the other type of rear main...the type in my camaro engine. to do THAT type you have to remove the tranny, bellhousing, clutch, and flywheel, and pull it out with a tool, then press in the new one. I neglected to do that one when i built my engine, as i didn't tear down the heads or block, just the intake and oil pan and valve covers. end result; i have 7 to 12 hours worth of work to replace the seal, and do it correctly. not fun.
