anyone have a swb 4.0 with SYE?
JeepcoMJ replied to JeepcoMJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
rear lift is SOA+ 2"from the spring perches...with 2wd leafs I want to get 7" out of the rear lift. -
need to know driveshaft length of 4.0 automatic (aw4) 4wd np231 t-case with slip-yoke eliminator dana 44 rear I haven't installed my transmission transfercase or rear axle yet, and won't have time before the weekend...I will however be getting it all done by saturday. anyways, i need to run to the junkyard before saturday as I don't have a car this weekend, and pick up hopefully the proper driveshaft. so, if you have this I'd like to know the length of your SYE shaft, and how you measured it. thanks, Pat

swb 4.0 auto 44 rear SYE rear driveshaft ???
JeepcoMJ replied to JeepcoMJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
it's done all the time on cherokees, so I'm not too particularly worried...plus with SYE if it does damage itself, I have a fallback to get home. I'll be building a skid or something for the shaft in case of some accident like that. I've got an xj rear shaft that actually is the perfect length to put the cardan shaft ends on, so I will be building the first one myself this weekend and having a local shop balance it (i don't trust them to do anything else) then having a different shop build me a custom shaft from scratch....either way, I just need this one moving for now. -
thanks...I'm not being very anal about it though right now...it just needs to run and drive (the repairs to the front header panel were, at least in my opinion, halfassed...though not as much as they were previously). it is nice to walk around it though... as for number done...I've not really finished a single project of mine since the 3800, which wasn't really finished anyways. so, the number is still zero. anyways, tire size is 33x10.50R15 BFG AT/KO's...that might give you perspective on the size of the truck as it sits.

began the lift, got the front axle in and the rear axle out. my favorite pic. this is perfectly lined up with the axle...this is ride height more or less, and my axle clearance. installed new hood hinges as well, since the old ones were completely FUBAR, and lined up some of the body panels. body panels lined up

swb 4.0 auto 44 rear SYE rear driveshaft ???
JeepcoMJ replied to JeepcoMJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
10-4 on that thanks C-dub -
87 comanche shortbed auto 4x4 conversion with slip yoke eliminator. I may not have a rear driveshaft right away, so I'm thinking of just driving it FWD only for a week or so since it won't leak. can I do this without wrecking stuff? what kind of speeds can I run? I only need to make a few half hour trips with it over the week from the 22-28...I am volunteering at fair all week and will be staying overnight for the most of it so won't necessarily be putting miles on it.

swb 4.0 auto 44 rear SYE rear driveshaft ???
JeepcoMJ replied to JeepcoMJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I thought about custom shafts for about 5 seconds. then dismissed it completely...i'm not in a position to be spending money like that right now, so worse come to worse I'll chop up one of mine, and retube it then take it in to have it balanced...i've done it once before without problems so i'm sure I can again. -
my 87 4.0 shortbed auto has just scored a 231 with SYE for cheap...and i need to do the 4wd conversion anyways when I install the 6.5" lift, so I'm wondering... are any of you running a shortbed 4.0 with SYE, and what are you using for a rear driveshaft? I'm hoping I can make one from an xj front or zj front driveshaft work as $$$ is low right now, but also don't want to do the project wrong. also, what length should the rear shaft be with SYE? thanks in advance! -Pat

had quite the score from a local today... got a 4wd aw4 from a 95 xj that he and I worked a deal on, a a-pillar gauge pod with trans temp gauge for "free", YJ ax15 with yj 4wd shifter for $150 np231 with SYE for $250 (to be payed...he needed it gone, i didn't have enough $$$ with me) so, all of the auto stuff will be going in the 87

Project Tetanus - H4s & Herculiner
JeepcoMJ replied to UNL1MTD's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
your tachometer seems incorrect. as you rev, I'm hearing 2500 rpm or so but seeing 2000...do you have a 4.0 or a 2.5, what year, and what is the cluster out of? -
I'll be making one for my MJ...just picked up mn YJ ax15 today for the 3800. not how i wanted to go, but for $150 with all the clutch assembly (that i can't use...), it was worth it. anyways, I'll be making them...in the fall. i could easily make two of them, but no guarantees or warantee would be provided.

i've blown up several of those transmissions with just a buick 3800...a supercharger will murder one.

all 4x4 MJ's should have come with them IIRC

they're in the back of the drum i think

Thanks a lot. That is very helpful. I was thinking maybe someone switched the brake backing plates on my truck from one side to the other which would make the cables go in from the rear instead of the front. How do the cables go in on the Cherokee? Because all of the diagrams I see show the cables coming in from the front, but I think they are showing the rear brakes on a Cherokee because all the manuals cover the Cherokee and Comanche. Thanks in advance for the help. i have 3 cherokee rear axles, so I will look in the morning for you :D

it's the thick steel. it should be red hot all the way around the welds by the time you're done welding...you need good penetration. I'm no welder, but I've done several axles and more to come tomorrow with my dad (this means he welded after I prepped and did measuring then tac-welded... ). he's a diesel mechanic with no real certifications to speak of but if it's mechanical, he's 99.99% capable of doing it...and he welds EXTREMELY well. red hot prior to welds will help, don't warp it though and obviously don't cut it if you heat it with a torch. a really good welder would do the trick though.
-
shortbed comanches from front, and 86 comanches from back. some 87 longbeds also have them from the back, but anything mid-87 and newer should technically have them on the front.
-
please take no offense to what I'm posting. take it to a professional, or have a professional do it. if you have attempted and cannot make it work as of yet, it is absolutely not a project that a first-timer should do. you have the problem that either your welder is too small, or improperly adjusted and you are not heating the metal enough (remember, that's THICK metal you're welding it too so it needs to be HOT), OR you are attempting to weld to cast. you should rely on a pro to do so.

Will a brush guard off a Wrangler fit a Comanche?
JeepcoMJ replied to mvusse's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
it actually may fit. i had a tube bumper brushguard from some sort of wrangler on my cherokee...test fit it to be sure.
