4cyl Fuel Injected sounds like a Diesel
Joop replied to ieatpunk's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Mine does.... -
Ever heard of JetCarrier??? I use them to handle all my shipping from usa to norway. Cheap and easy.

Just sent you my order :D

I tried shimming the fork last vinter since my vac thingy didnt work. Lasted for about 15min in the sand&mud before the shift fork broke straight off, leaving me with just 2wd. As an emergency trail fix i opend the cover, tossed that  broken fork as far as i could into the forest, then i just moved the slider over to engaged position and secured it with a thight hose clamp around the axle shaft itself. This "temporary" fix have worked just fine for almost a year...

Low/ inconsistant oil pressure
Joop replied to Ben-88Comanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
 Can it really be that simple? I have the exact same problem and i also use a fram filter! Its about time for an oil/filter change anyway so i will definetly try it. -
1. My MJ is a 86. It had the 2.8 in it when i got it, now i have a 90 4.0L under the hood. Is there any difference between the 86 modell front brakes and thoose that came with the 90 4.0L?? If so what year did they change? Need to know because I'm going to safety inspection soon (should have been done in april :shake: ) and local laws state that if you have increased engine power by more than 15% you must have documentation that the brakes can handle the power. 2. My e-brake works on only one wheel and i think it would be a good idea to replace the shoes and other hardware. I have searched both quadratech and summit but none of them have brake parts for MJ's with amc20 rear end. Is there any other more common jeeps models that uses the same brake parts as my MJ? By the way, its friday and  to you all!
-
I just google'd amc 20 and that was the best picture that came up. I don't have any pictures of my own axles, but the one in the diesel is worse than the one in the picture :( I guess norwegian rust is just as bad as yours...
-
If your truck is a 86 modell its very likely that your rear axle is a AMC20. I have 2 86 modell MJ's (2.8L and 2.1diesel) and both have the AMC20. Picture of AMC20: can't really tell if they are good or bad, but they should be almost as strong as the dana44 rear end.

To all those who love carbs...and hate fuel injection...
Joop replied to Pete M's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If it was, it's not anymore. :D It has been the way it is now since the original owner had a wire harness fire under the dash, gutted it, and eventually gave up on fixing it. He wired it enough to drive it around the farm in Oklahoma (originally a California truck). Is the choke still operated electric? if so you should check if it opens and closes as it should. According to the quote above it sounds like you might have a little problem there  -
don't know if there's any difference between your jeeps and the export models, but this problem have been discussed several times at a norwegain forum and the conclussion have been that you can mix somewhere between 50 to 75% E85 and the rest normal gasoline with no ill effects to a otherwise stock 4.0L. Its supposed to be based on experience, not just a "guesstimate" I have not tried this myself, so don't blame me if you blow up your engine.. i only tell what i have been told by people i don't know.

AW4 and offroading, how do you guys use it?
Joop posted a topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Just curious about how the more experienced of you use it when you go offroading. I am not very used to auto's and so far i have used (when in 4-LO off course) D on flat ground and uphill, and 1-2 when in extreme crawling situations or in need of compression braking going downhill. I have the impression that it shifts smoother and faster in D than in 3 or 1-2 thats why i prefeer to use D as much as possible. Pleas teach me  -
My mj had a set of 33 - 12.5 with no lift when i bought it. Only mod was the front fenders which was moved outwards about 1 1/2 inch. They rub like */&&ยค but i have done a hole lot of heavy offroading with them. :D I'm used to it, still i won't recomend that size.

Jeepcomj and eagle: How could it be that i knew what your replies whould be? I think i have enough parts laying around to get it back on the road, i just don't know if its worth it. I have no need for it, and i don't think i would get much for it if i sell it. About every second jeep here is a diesel, and they have a bad reputation for beeing lazy and unreliable. Still...I'm not 100% certain about the trailbeater thing, it would have been fun to restore it as well...

Just bought another MJ today  A rusty old 86 LB with the 2.1 turbodiesel Lots of rust on the outside, but the interior and a lot of the plastic stuff is in pretty good shape. Engine startet after a can of starting fluid and lots of cranking, runs good but its leaking oil everywhere. My plan is to tear out everything i might need on my other mj and build a trailbeater out of the rest. My dream is to put in a v8 and fullsize axels, but to begin with i will give the oil burner a chance

I have only been in finland for a total of 12 hours so i can't tell you what's worth to look at. But i do know that one of the world cup/nordic cup races in the formula offroad series is being hold at kangasala (just outside of tampere) 16th & 17th august. It is definetly worth to check out if you happend to be there at that time. There is also a offroad trial competition 6th september somewhere in finland (sorry i don't know where). My cousin plans to race there with his heavily modified '42 willys jeep and maybe i'll be his co-driver on that event.

Just shout out if you need help translating, il be happy to help because i know from experience how hard it can be to find nice MJs in europe. You might want to save this to your favorites: http://www.blocket.se/li?ca=5_s&q=comanche&c=101&w=3 It should bring up all comanches for sale in sweden.

jtdesigns, i cought that one right away  Have seen it 3564273567347times, but lets not turn this into a pulp fiction topic

Yes thats right. 1/4 pounder... :???: :dunno:

Look towards sweden. They have decent prizes and there are always a couple of good looking manches for sale (and even more bad looking ones). Not that much longer to drive if you already consider going to germany. 2560EUR: http://www.blocket.se/vi/15469844.htm?ca=6_s 2027EUR: http://www.blocket.se/vi/15650892.htm?ca=6_s 3200EUR: http://www.blocket.se/vi/15315171.htm?ca=6_s By the way, thats one (and a half) sweet looking XJ you got there :D

There are several lifts, one to the right outside of the first two pics. But they told us to keep the h**l away from them. Safety i guess...

Every winter at the end of the ski season, one of the local offroad clubs rent a nearby ski center and opens it for the public to play with their 4x4's. And that happend today :D Just tought i should share some videos and photos from it. In my opinion, this is about as much fun you could possibly have with your clothes on. My brothers girlfriend was riding with me on the first run and shoot these videos with her cellphone. There was still some sort of traction this early so i just floored it and passed the entire field of toyotas ann nissans :D Also shot a few pictures by myself, not many jeeps to look at unfortunately.. From the starting field at the bottom: Something is just very wrong whith the next two pics: Later, when the driving was officialy over and the "amateurs" had gone, the more hardcore of us (me included) headed for a really steep hill. And i mean really REALLY steep: Off course i went as far up as everyone else  Waiting for my turn to air up at the gas station afterwards, had to drop the tires down to 3psi to get up that last hill: can't think of a better way to spend a sunday :D Only damage was i broke the upper left shockabsorber stud when i jumped (you can hear i go airborne in the first video, well i had even more speed on the second run...) I just removed the damper and keept on driving. Edit: It was the rear damper, would have parked it if it was in the font. I have already welded it once but it seems like i have to remove both bed and gas tank to get it done properly :headpop:

Stock transmission crossmember questions...
Joop replied to MF Steve!'s topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Had the same problem myself not long ago. And belive me, i tried everything to get the aw4 boltet onto the old 5speed's bolt holes. What a waste of time! Its just not possible. My solution was to jack up the transmission with the crossmeber attached to it, make shure it is properly centered and alligned...and start drilling new holes! This is on the passenger side, and here you see it from inside the cab Bolt 1 goes just trough the bracket inside the frame rail, nr. 2 is under that cover you see in the last picture, there was a hole in the floor there already. And nr. 3 goes all the way trough the frame rail, both 2 and 3 are welded stuck. Maybe not the best way around this problem but it seems strong enough for me. Have done some pretty hard wheeling lately and i there is no signs of stress og things falling apart. -
calling all 2.8 to 4.0 swappers
Joop replied to JeepcoMJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Pulled the 2.8 january 8th last year, and was back on the road with the 4.0 last saturday.... Looks like i have the slow-wrenching record around here  3 people with more-than-average jeep knowledge and proper tools should be able to do this in 48 hours if they plan everything right. And yes, the motor mount plates bolt right into the 86 engine bay. -
Bought a "new" pump at the local junkyard. Installed it, problem solved. :D
