  1. The noise just showed up on mine. I do not think its supposed to be this loud, probably means the motor, or the gear on the shaft end is shot/going out.
  2. No cruise control. Oceanic...You are on the right track. Sure enough, the gas pedal moves at the same time the noise is present. Waiting on helper to confirm under the hood....
  3. Idle speed actuator motor....(had to look it up in the manual) Will check in the am. Looks like Napa might carry it if thats the issue.
  4. Thanks mister! Will check it out in the morning. -E. p.s.- IF thats it...how does one fix it? What is said part called? And...Is it still available?
  5. Yes...Like a half second after shutdown. And...also...why check the gas pedal? I'll know more tomorrow when I have a helper, but any additional info would be appreciated. I suppose a sound like a clicking relay (only really loud) From inside the cab it sounds like its coming from the drivers side?!? -E.
  6. no weird noise coming from the throwout bearing otherwise (ie, when I press in the clutch) I will check the fan clutch when I get a helper to turn off the engine while I have my head under the hood. I have had the "stuck" starter gear before, and it sounds similar....Thanks for the tips! I'll report back when I know more.
  7. Hey all, So...recently the truck has developed a noise after shutdown. Hard to describe the noise exactly. Sounds like a slight grinding noise, rather than a squeal. Happens for a few seconds almost every time. Currently its about 10 degrees out here, so I have not had time or warmth enough to check it out further. I thought Id get some opinions on where to look first. My only 2 thoughts are: Stuck starter gear? OR Fan clutch bearings? -Erin
  8. I owned a 54 for about a year. It had been "converted" to run a 6cyl studebaker engine, and never really ran right. It was a BLAST to drive. (like a friggen tank) I miss it. I always thought it would be cool to put the body on an XJ frame/engine.... -Erin p.s.- There are lots of good parts houses in the midwest that do parts for them.
  9. Just a shot in the dark here, but in SOME fuel injected vehicles, holding the gas pedal at WOT will clear a flooded engine signal. Fuel pressure regulator? -E.
  10. X2 on the woodchuck cider....variety pack. I have not seen "winter" yet....sounds tasty.
  11. This will be functional...the rosewood is hard as rocks. This will probably outlast the truck, and is removeable. I took a look online at prices on buying something like this....Yikes, I am in the wrong biz. A turned shift knob like this would most likely run in the $200 range to purchase online. -E.
  12. Thanks Pete! My truck came with a Hurst T-handle, which needless to say, sucks, and now that its going on winter here, it sucked even more. The threaded insert did not go in well on this one, so I'm having him make another one. (he owes me a couple favors) and hopefully we can get the insert in correctly. It sure does feel good. Warm to the touch. Also fits well, as I'm a Guitar builder by trade....we use alot of rosewood. :D
  13. Hey All, So...I asked in the tech section for some ballpark specs on shift knob size....Then I passed the info on to a buddy of mine, and today he presented me with this....Solid Rosewood and copper shift knob.
  14. wow....thats pretty slick. Thanks guys for all the suggestions. -E.
  15. I'll give it a shot. They put an awful lot of salt on the roads here, along with some new "de-icing" agent, that seems like it could have the ability to peel paint....Thanks folks.
  16. rust is not yet eating the inner cab corner (or at least THROUGH it) and Id like to keep it that way so next spring I can cut out the cab corners. (already have "new" corners waiting) There is a hole in the bottom of each corner, just want to seal the holes till spring. -E. p.s.- I have already scraped/ground off all the rust I could see from the outside, sprayed rust reformer, and a coat of paint to start the protective process....but, I'm pretty sure even the 3M duct tape aint gonna stick through the winter here....
  17. Hey All, So....I'm clearly not going to get to my rust issues before the cold sets in here. I was wondering if a quick bondo and mesh screen, or fiberglass and resin would help keep crap/salt etc out of my cab corners as to not make them rapidly worse. both corners have holes in the bottom/corner. Preference? -E.
  18. Thanks Guys! I just needed a basic length measurement for the guy doing it. I'll post a photo of the custom knob when its done! -E.
  19. Hey All, Since I picked up my truck a few months ago now. It did not have the stock shift knob (4 speed) It had been replaced with an aluminum "hurst" shift knob. I have decided to make one....(I have a guy with a wood lathe) out of some exotic guitar building wood scrap I have laying around. Anyone know the length of a stock shift knob? I'm assuming the 4 and 5 speed knobs are approximately the same length. -Erin
  20. Hey Jim, glad you're OK. That broken wrist sucks. btdt. Take it easy. -E.
  21. Thanks Flint! Thats the answer I was looking for. They are fairly inexpensive for aftermarket....
  22. I was wondering what the thought was on using a JY trac bar, or if I should just buy new?
  23. I am also looking at doing this soon. Am I safe to assume by the above statement that a Used XJ trackbar should function fine, or, should one go buy a brand new track bar? -E.
  24. For anyone considering making one of these. Have them unfold the canvas at the store and carefully examine it. I have already found a few defects in the weave of the canvas that I'm going to have to sew shut, and re-water proof.
