Hey all, So...My alternator has been acting up lately (sounds like a bad bearing) And, its under warranty, so I took it out tonight....removing the last bolt (under the alt) I discovered a mysterious orange wire with a connector on the end of it. It does not appear to have been connected to anything that I can see, and really does not reach anything but the alternator, but there is nothing for it to plug into on the alternator. ANY idea what this is, and where it is supposed to plug into?!? :help: As its my DD, I need to get this figured out by tomorrow evening..... :(

Hey All, So my mechanic buddy thought my steering wheel pad (the part that surrounds the horn) was clipped on, so he pulled it off with brute strength....grr. The horn seems to be functioning ok at the moment, but the pad is flopping around on the steering wheel. I need one asap. Post here if you have one, price shipped to 55407. Thanks!!!! See photo for type. Color is Black. -E. p.s.- Normally I would have posted in the wanted section, but I need it sooner than later!

Ben....I'll need your address....feel free to accidentally leave a socket set out. I need a few parts from that "donor" tee hee. How come all these midwesterner trucks look in better shape than mine....?!? Hows the rust?

DIY tonneau cover?

Finally a couple days in a row of SUN.....I can get the velcro on the truck today! -
Hey All, I finally had my mechanic buddy over to take a look at my steering "clunk" He looked at the steering linkage from the firewall to the steering box, and said the U-joints feel like they have play in them. We checked the collar bolts on the linkage, and they were tight. He also said, there was no viable "play" in the track bar, but the ball joint end of the track bar could be dry. He also said, they can be a royal pain to remove/replace. He said Everything else looked/felt great (ball joints/tie rod ends, etc). I have 2 questions.... Are the U-joints on the steering linkage replaceable, or is there a direct linkage swap from another model (ie, XJ)??? How hard is it really to get the track bar out? (I have a ball joint seperator) But I cannot see how one gets any sort of tool on the nut?!? (he mentioned I could inject grease into the fitting with a syringe, and if there was a noticeable change....bingo) Thoughts on this would be great, as well as answers to my 2 questions. -Erin

steering clunk round 2.....
lexluthier72 replied to lexluthier72's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yep...Cotter pin saved my Hinney. :D On to the next battle....steering, and beer. Edit: In case no one caught it, I did not use a wrench to remove the nut...Yikes. -

lexluthier72 replied to lexluthier72's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Update: The "hub nut" is NOT 36mm. It is 27mm. (1990 2wd) I pulled off the hub nut cover, took off the cotter pin. the nut was barely hand tight. I snugged it up until the play/clunk was gone, and re-assembled. The wheel bearings feel fine, and she rode fine. Still have to find the source of my steering clunk, but at least this hub issue is solved. -

Here's a photo with the wheel off. It looks like a "serviceable" hub :dunno: I have a 1" breaker bar, and a long cheater, and heat! And from the rear (best I could do) The ball joints feel Solid! The play is definitely in the brake rotor (the only thing that moves)Am I correct that this is the "serviceable" hub/rotor assembly? Any thoughts would be great. -

Nope. I have not solved any of the steering issues. (having trouble getting my mechanic buddy over here as my helper) I will re-assess the tie rod ends/ball joints as well. I'm off to pick up the hub socket. (just in case) Thanks so much. The good news is, Napa carries the "hub assembly" for the 2wd for $50 if that is the issue..... -E. -

64cheyenne....that is on my list of things to replace. :D Edit: Is Axle hub nut 36mm on a 2wd?!? -

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like my hub/wheel bearings are either out of adjustment, or the wheel bearings, even though not making any noise, are probably shot. I just took a look at the Chilton manual on how it goes together. I will check the hub/nut adjustment, and check the wheel bearings. -E. I need to know the socket size for the hub nut....anyone? I don't have anything that big.... -

Thanks Jeepcoma. I assume the hub nut can to a certain extent snug up the hub/rotor? I have not seen an exploded view of how it goes together. I'll report what I find tomorrow, if my helper shows up. -E. -
Hey all....so, I never real nailed down my steering clunk (from previous post) I had the passenger side front wheel up in the air today and grabbed at 12 and 6 and gave it a shake, and again at 9 and 3 and did the same. Light clunk in both directions....I did not have a helper. Visually I could not see any flex in the ball joints, or the tie rod end. I did notice the brake rotor moving slightly....Could my hub be loose? (and causing the clunk) Anybody know off hand what size socket the front hub nut is? 2.5L 2WD..... -Erin p.s.- Any other thoughts welcome, and yes, I will try it again with a helper tomorrow evening..... Edit: The wheel bearings do not sound bad when the wheel is rotated.

Thanks! Seriously, I could not have done it without your photo and info. The J-hooks seem to be working just fine, and it means I did not have to drill the top of the rail. I could not find 1" velcro in the "industrial" stuff...but I like your thinking. I'm just waiting for the on and off rain to stop so I can apply the velcro to the bed rail, and waterproof the canvas. -Erin -

Yep. hahaha. The canvas stretches enough that its hardly noticeable. -
it should not be hard to find. Totally worth it. (most of the cap is metal as well) so make sure you get a cap with it. :D

Yep...Paint came up when I pulled off my "test" strips of velcro...(spot was already damaged) but honestly, I did use a vice grips to pull it up. Amazing stuff. The cover posted earlier seems to be discontinued, but I think I got pretty close with some creative engineering. -

Hey Vaquaro....are your "mid supports" fixed (screwed down) or do they "float" under the cover? I picked up some conduit to make some of them. -E. -
DIY tonneau cover?
lexluthier72 replied to lexluthier72's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Sweet. Currently, the length is absolutely spot on for the clamps I used, but if I end up getting this extrusion, I can add some length to the tailgate end without too much hassle. As soon as the on/off rain stops, I will be putting the velcro down on the box, and waterproofing the canvas. All materials to DIY $80 (includes waterproofing spray) This of course means, you need to know someone who can sew, and has a machine that will sew HD canvas. Thanks folks for all the tips/tricks/hints!!! -E. -
DIY tonneau cover?
lexluthier72 replied to lexluthier72's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yeah, I thought about that, but did not want to do a 2-piece cover with a seam down the middle. There is actually about a 1/2 inch between the velcro and the edge of the canvas, and the canvas when tight does actually come right to the very edge of the bed rail. The widest canvas available was 60 inches. (exactly the width of the bed to the outside edge of the rails) IF it does become a problem, I can always add a "flap" on the sides. After I get it waterproofed, I will be sure to report how it works. The velcro I got for the bed rails was "industrial" The test strips I put on yesterday, I had to pull off with a vice grips today. Strong stuff!!! -

Here are the materials: 2.5 yards of 60" wide Duck Canvas, 4 Galvanized J-hooks, One plastic coated 3/8ths aluminum rod, 20 feet of 2" wide velcro Here are the J-hooks installed, holding the rod in place. (rod is inside a loop in the canvas) Here we are, test fitting the canvas. The reason it does not look tight is, we only used spot strips of velcro on the bed to test fit the canvas. Velcro will be applied to the length of the bed rails, and the top of the tailgate. No sun yet today.... :( I have to pick up some waterproofing for it (west marine store) and some conduit/pvc tube for some supports in the middle.
