Intermittent steering creak?
lexluthier72 replied to lexluthier72's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Gremlin found. Steering box bolts are loose. Now I just gotta figure out how to get to it without taking everything apart. The squeak turned into a clunk, and I got under there again, you can now see the box moving when you turn the wheel. yay. -
Hey All, I of course know, the steering components in my MJ are 21 years old, and thus worn. I was wondering if anyone had a list of what to fix/change in order of importance to improve the steering stability, Obviously I can't afford to do it all at the same time. I did a basic check of ball joints/tie rod ends, and they are solid. There is minimal play in the pass side wheel bearing, but from what I read in the manual, thats normal. The goal is to make the truck able to do long(er) trips without worry about the front end. Keep in mind, its a stock truck, no lift. -Erin p.s.- Where is everyone getting replacement parts for all the linkage/bushings, etc?!?

Intermittent steering creak?
lexluthier72 replied to lexluthier72's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Jeff, I think you are on the right track. I shot a few dry looking things with wd40 last night (no grease gun yet) and the noise is gone. I'm picking up a grease gun this morning and going to do a chassis lube. Are the ball joints serviceable? I did not see grease fittings on them. -
Intermittent steering creak?

Ok, I checked the track bar, no play at all. I did find movement at the joint between the tie rod, and the drag link, but only up and down and not "loose" (which if I'm correct, this is normal function. I'm pretty sure this thing has not had a chassis lube in a while, so I'm buying a grease gun tomorrow. Also, the passenger side lug nuts were not snug.... -

Is LH from the drivers seat, or facing the front of the vehicle? -
Hey All, I noticed today, my steering is making some creaking noise. Only happens when I turn the wheel toward the left, and back to center. I jacked up the drivers side checked the drivers side wheel for play in all directions (none) and while up in the air, the noise went away. I put it back down on the ground, and the noise was faint. came out a couple hours later....no noise!!?! Anything in particular to look at/for? I know there is some slop in the steering box, but nothing else stuck out. I have not jacked up the passenger side to assess that side yet. -E.

I was just under my MJ....it looks exactly like that. My Mechanic let me know, that is in fact correct. Spline to spare. -E.

Scored this at the JY this morning. $16. Out of a 6cyl XJ. It has the adjustable tach. Install soon hopefully. I still need the oil/temp senders. -

DIY tonneau cover?
lexluthier72 replied to lexluthier72's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Just rainproof from point A, to point B. Not really keeping anything in the bed. Got an example? Edit: The problem with Craigslist, is finding one that fits, that isn't too far away. -

Thanks Jim. I was thinking about doing the frame/vinyl thing, but I think its cost prohibitive. maybe plywood. I am on the lookout on Craigslist, nothing so far... -
Replacing the Interior Lights -- (How I did it)
lexluthier72 replied to BLHTAZ's topic in MJ Tech: DIY Projects and Write-Ups
The drivers side footwell light comes on when you pull out on the headlight switch. Rotating the switch to turn on/off the interior lights does NOT turn off the drivers side footwell. It stays on as long as the headlight switch is pulled out. -E. -
Hey All, Anyone have a DIY tonneau cover? I need something ULTRA inexpensive to get me through the winter. Needs to be fairly waterproof. I don't really want a topper (blind spots) and I don't want to drill the bed rail to mount anything. Clamps? Any ideas/input/PHOTOS?!? Thanks all! -Erin

Hey Doug! Nice to hear from you. I was beginning to think I was the only Comanche in the twin cities. I was almost out your way. There is a Napa Auto Warehouse store in St louis Park off 394& Louisianna Ave. (thats where I found my Valve cover gasket) -

For those that have done the footwell light mod....The drivers side only comes on when you turn the headlights on, and stays on (until you turn headlights off).....Is this correct function? Is there a way to make it go on/off with the door opening without splicing in to the passenger side light? -E. -

I think he means to ask where is the potentiometer located on the (back?) of the cluster? Also...anybody confirm that a 90 XJ will have the same speedo cable hookup as a 90 MJ? -E. -

Thanks Eagle! I assume if the replacement is also a 1990, that the speedo cable will be a match?
