  1. Ok, the word was yes put em right here so... I didnt ask Pete if i'm supposed to change the subject or not. Well I learn everything by doing it wrong first. I copied this from the old MJ group [which I still prefer over this one but thats jus me]. My '86 had a busted spare tire winch crank which I replaced with a junkyard one but my '89 is also busted and there are no MJ's to be had in the junkyards around here so I just repaired it. Usually its just a broken cable mere inches from the end. Easy fix - here's some pics and info if anyones interested... First, grind off the end of the rivets on the winch housing... Image Not Found Then knock them out and remove the plate to make sure the cable is wound straight... Image Not Found Replace the cover and bolt it together with four 1/4" x 2" bolts.. Image Not Found If yer lucky enough to still have the cable end - great, but I didnt so I just used a u-bolt cuz its easy to get thru the centerhole of the spare wheel... Image Not Found Bolt the winch back up and as you can see theres still plenty of slack left... Image Not Found The u-bolt [aka exhaust clamp] is plenty strong to keep the spare up but I still ended up putting the flange on and nuts finger tight just to make sure. [not pictured] until I find an end for it... Image Not Found Done. Thats a 31" spare and a 3" lift so you know the thing works and is still long enough. Got the tire out of my bed anyway.. 2. I have several write-ups on how-to's. Should they go on this thread or is there some other place they belong? Sorry still new to this and don't wanna get beetch-slapped again. BTW - WTH is 'DIY'?? :???:
  3. Looks good, trip. I did the same damn thing to my white 89 after I bought it cept my bumpers chrome. I have a good complete black one I'm thinking of swapping on.
  4. These stock systems worked at some time, right? Otherwise every potential buyer would end up stranded on the test drive. My 89 XJ worked fine until one day POOF it overheated from then on. I like the 3-fan idea but ditto on the current draw and the fans I have installed - be they pushers or pullers - I just reversed polarity to spin them which ever way I wanted. My 89 MJ overheats constantly and I have yet to find a solution short of a 3 row rad. The prior owner also had problems cuz it has a new single row rad and it is an open system. Seems to me that the problem [or one of the problems] is these stupid shaped rads can't move the coolant thru fast enuf. Anyone ever put a smaller pulley on the pump? I just put a 195 thermo in cuz it had a 180 but thats cuz the heater wasn't working well, but now I think theres a problem with the box or core. Also cuz I welded my fan to the clutch [constant 1-1 ratio rather than variable] which probably made the most improvement in cooling than anything, to the point of running too cool - thus the thermo swap.
  5. Nuthin that far north. I was wanting to run Bill Moore Lake or Slaughterhouse Gulch before the snow starts fallin. Maybe even an overnighter.
  6. Well I refuse to subscribe to the opinion that going from 3.07 to 3.55 isn't worth the effort thats ridiculous and there are no 4.10s [whats a 4.11?? :huh???: ] to be found in these boneyards around here. 3.73's are up for grabs occasionally tho. Also no MJs in the junkyards either and an XJ rear is too much of a pain in the arse to swap into a Comanche. Nah, sorry but I'm stickin to this plan. I have one guy I traded a 48" hi-lift jack for a chainsaw who said he'd do my gears for $100 per end, axles out so I will contact him and set it up. I'll buy the beer and he can show me the deed. I'm an F.A.A. licenced aircraft airframe and powerplant mechanic and I THINK I can handle it with the training but like everything else you need to be taught how not to pee on the toilet seat before you learn to lift it up first - same $#!t here. If it fails - I will learn what failed and try again but I never quit before I try.
  7. My 89 has 307's and I just aquired a set of 3.55's front and rear. Ring, pinion and carriers and even a complete spare front D30 with all the steering components. Mechanically I have no reservations that I can regear these axles but I have never set backlash and don't want to lunch the diffs in the first outing. I can't pay someone to do it and besides dammit I want to learn this myself. Any help is mucho appreciado. The 307's were fine when it had P225 tires on but with the 31's it lost alot of power/mpg. Eventually I'll fine sone 3.73's in the boneyard but 355's are everywhere and I got three sets for free. They can only help and from what I've heard it makes a huge difference.
  8. Hey - can I plz get a closer look at that MJ of yers?? A pic the size of a postage stamp is tuff to make out!
  9. can't say I've ever noticed any XJ doors without qtr windows or wings. Is 97 the only year those were used? I like em!
  10. hmm. I dunno. Also didnt know there was a limit so I will cease n desist on them.
  11. Did this last month. Sooo simple! The beauty is attaching it to the rail you can move it forward/backward to suit your style. Grab a roof rail off any Cherokee but grab a rack too cuz they changed year to year. Cut the rail to two 21" sections. Add the endcaps and screw to the cab roof with the rack attached so you have the spacing accurate. Attach your fave lites and neatly hide the hot wires under the rubber moulding, wire them in series. Shrink-tube the splices. Ground each light to the rack. Ground the rack to the cab. Run the hot wire thru the the cab via a grommet and under the panels to the dash bezel to a switch. I made my circuit protection redundant meaning the power AND ground wires both have inline fuses. I'll be damned if MY truck is gonna burn up due to a crappy install! Personally, I think it looks professional and almost store bought. I wired mine to a illuminated rocker switch that matches the manual aux fan switch that all Jeep owners eventually install. Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found I used it on the following campout and YOW it lit the way all right. I get alot of inquiries as to where I got it and was it stock yadda yadda. Idiots!
  12. Some Colorado color for youz peeps. Was up here Sunday on a trail repair/reclamation project that I never got to help with due to a blowed up radiator hose. But I went back today with Cindy and took some more pics of the leaves turning. This is where Pete camped when he was here in '05 I thinks it was. Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found Now begins the ugly part of the year. Bare trees, dirty snow, gravel-covered roads.
  13. can't do saturdays. wish I could
  14. I've never been there. I am participating in a rehab project in Slaughterhouse Oct 4-5 we are planting posts and signs etc to help keep the place open and we can use any help we can get especially anyone who can operate a bobcat, post hole digger etc. We're camping Sat night and working the trail Sunday. ANYONE UP FOR THIS???? Anybody up for giving some back?? Talk is cheap - actions speak LOUDER
  15. Yep it has the solid quarter window. :headpop: I had a coat hanger all straightened out but it wouldnt reach the keys from the pass door. I just got back from the glass shop. They put in a new front one which was also cracked but after waiting two hours they said the rear would be another day cuz some dumbass crushed the truck it was coming from. So they are coming to my house sometime in the next day or so to finish the work. Its a mexican shop in a real $#!tty part of town and they sell used glass if you are in poverty like me. Two guys got into a yelling match near my truck and one started pounding on my truck  :thwak: , which got my butt up and headed in his direction. I think it was the foreman and the guy who screwed up on not getting the glass there on time.
  16. Sorry bro. The only way I can make that is after 5pm and if I'm gonna do that I may as well pack the gear and make it a camping trip into Sunday. I've wheeled SH at night and its pretty spooky. But my new truck mod will take the edge off - I will get some pics up hopefully tomorrow to show you what I mean.. :brows:
  17. So the 'new' 1989 MJ still won't pass emissions. At least I found out that it is not coming out of open loop mode and into closed loop. It is running at 200° but the computer is only getting 150° so it runs the same at any RPM and any temp. I replaced the coolant temp sensor and knock sensor but to no avail. The ECU is still getting the wrong info. Then, Saturday night we get a phone call that my wifes mom had died. Cindy [my wife] was wrecked. She was close to her mom. I took her to dinner that night and locked my keys in the truck. The store I got copies from when I bought it didnt have a blank for the door so I had no spare door key and in my attempts to get inside I shattered the rear window. Since the front windsheild is also gone I am now paying $275 to get both replaced which is a pretty good price for both. I had just sprang for airfare for Cin and my son to go to TX to see her folks a week ago and I am so broke now I am not sure when recovery will happen. BUT - I have done a cool mod to the truck tho that is worth a look so when I get back from getting new glass in it I will post up some pix and info of it. Its pretty cool and I expect someone will follow the example. That and I have installed an amp'd 8-speaker sound system in it with dual 12" subs and all I can say is HOLY $#!T!!! For the first time in 34 yrs I am actually 100% HAPPY with my vehicles sound.
  18. Well I only have sun and wed off plus I busted my rear glass like a dumbASS but I'm for sure open to wheel with y'all [geezus did I say y'all? ]
  19. Sorry about the spankin we gave ya last night. Ah, not really - TAKE THAT!!! :D My Bronco's will prolly lose the rest of the season now that they annihilated them Raiders but hey - I take em when I get em...! See you in Denver on Thanksgiving [well, nov 23] ok? Watch them 15 yard penalties and you should do fine
  20. Its in there but the camcorder batteries were dead. I just kinda said "DUH!" shoulda maybe charged em eh?
  21. The 'new' MJ's maiden voyage. Aug 12 and yet we were walking distance to deep snow. Truck ran great but the water crossing busted the weld on my fan so it was clutched again and we overheated going home. PLUS I smelled gear oil heading home and thought the front diff vent tube had become disconnected in the water also and water got in the diff? Nooo I had no vent tube at all so yea water did get in there. All fixed now. Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found And the videos... Water crossing Camp River Anthony. 21 yrs old and this is the 1st tree he ever climbed. Ever.
  22. Got those for a hundred bucks at a used tire/wheel place near here. 15x9 but the centerholes a weird size so I had a heck of a time finding caps that would fit.
  23. Thats one cool MJ for sure. I'm partial to white Comanches anyway I just did some upgrades to mine also, including a 3" lift too. I like the 3" dealio cuz your not committed to a shock upgrade or trackbar lengthening. here's a couple before pics of 'Angel' [a couple peeps here and there said I need to name her and thats what came to mind]... BEFORE [two weeks ago] Image Not Found Image Not Found AFTER And this includes the bucket seat conversion, 3" lift, push bar, '87 Chrysler hood vents, rope tie-downs for the bed, mudders, etc... 24. can't get the truck to pass emissions now. I'm getting closer to figgering it out tho. Also its overheating on these 90° plus days. The rad is new but the coolant looked like puke so I flushed it and put in new antifreeze and also I think the fan clutch was worn out so I welded the fan to the clutch so its direct drive now [yep I removed the electric and put the mech one back in]. Doesnt seem to have affected the power at all. We'll see if that helped or not.
  25. Nice! Speakin of "Jeep Box", here's one I built yesterday with stuff I had laying around. 2/3 sheet of particle board, some glue & screws and a lot of wire later and.... :brows: Image Not Found The two 12" subs don't match but again, they were on the shelf in the garage. The 750w amp is new and I had to buy the felt to cover the box. The MJ has grills in back for the 5.25" speakers and pigtails too but the cab didnt have holes for the speakers! :headpop: So I put them in the box and ran the wires out the sides. Image Not Found Image Not Found I wasnt positive it would fit but I measured it out and figured I had 7" at the base, 3" at the top, 15" of height and 45" of width to mess with and dang if it didnt fall right in. The seats don't tilt forward so I had to remove one to get it in. I wanted the most cu ft possible for the best deep bass, and I stuffed it with pillow innards. Yep it sounds awesome!
