  1. ah heck its a oil thread so.... ;) 0w-30 is awesome for brand new engines that are super tight. Rice burners for example. The first index is the viscosity at start-up, the second is at operating temp. In our old mills, you'll probably leak oil all over the damm place but hey it will crank over at sub zero temps like its July!! Viscosity defined literally means 'resistance to flow'. I see a hundred oil filters a week and in 4 years I have NEVER seen an Amsoil come off a vehicle. So......... :dunno: I run conventional 5w-30 and 10w-30 year round and have never had any issues at all cept recently I put synthetic 5w-30 in the 89 MJ and it rattles at start-up for a sec then quiets down. no clue why.. :huh???: never dun it b4
  2. mr HornDog - you rock as usual!!
  3. Guys plz READ the post k? I don't walk into a parts store for filters - I WORK IN ONE!!!!!!!!! why drive all over town for one filter when I sell 3 types and can buy ONE for all 3 Heeps? I sell Fram, Mopar and Motorcraft but none that fit the 89. Even Walmarts store brand 'Supertech' beats fram into the dirt. They at least are made in the USA. Thanks for the response. I will hit the boneyard for a neck and also pick up new o-rings for it. Thats a common source for leaks, may as well stop it b4 it starts. Ps - I just HATE bourbon whiskey.. :ack:
  4. Hey Brutha's! My '89 takes a Fram [worst oil filters ever made] #3985. All my other Heeps take a Fram 16 [fortunately I can substitute a Mopar for those]. I'd like to put the same filter on all of them. Yea I can use Purolator or whatever - thats not the point. I want to be able to use the same filter on all my 4.0L Jeeps. The question is, is it possible to remove the filter mount from the '89 and swap in one from say a '91 so I can use a different filter? I can go yank one from a boneyard XJ and try it but I thought maybe its already been done. Seems simple enuf. WHY?? Because where I am, Fram is the most easily available and most hard to find in a 3985 but I can get mopars for about $5 Why do I hate Fram? I work with them daily and they are trash. The threads are machined poorly, spot welds are loose, I have seen oil pressure peak after a Fram filter change then level out after changing the filter with a different one. Sometimes they come without gaskets, and lastly - they are made in countries you don't want to visit. Ever. My opinion. And those are like buttholes right? we all got em.
  5. Thanks for the support people [and sarcasm etc]. I'm headed out to bowl about twenty frames with the offspring. I think we can let this one close now [hint]. For the first time in 30 yrs I can say I'm disappointed in her Dad. He's never been a quitter. "Its in Gods hands now" he says. Well thats a sure cat death waiting to happen there. If he wants to say that Cindys persistance and never ending efforts finding someone to DO THE RIGHT THING AND HELP THIS CAT was because of the almighty, well he can go ahead and give credit to thin air. I personally say it was all her doing. Thanks again
  6. The fire cheif himself said the last time they rescued a cat, the cat died and the owners sued them. Personally I think thats a crock of $#!T and nothing more than a lie. He's probably in the middle of a Brady Bunch marathon on TV and don't wanna be bothered - sonofabitch. But we got hold of a volunteer fireman with spiked shoes who went over and badda bing badda boom got Ripley down - no problemo! He is now on the way to the vet. He's dehydrated, weak and stressed out but alive. I'm still too pissed to speak to the father-in-law for fear of what I may say cuz I won't hold my tongue and it took my wife, 2000 miles away to save this little furrball when her owners just stood down on the ground looking up with big question marks over their heads 'duh watta we do huh?' The guy is getting $100 paypal'd to him tonight and I am going to contact the local news press for this county and try to get the rescuer some recognition that he deserves. Pics were taken of the whole thing and I will post them up as soon as I get them. I had to sell both my CB radios, my stereo, a futon and a garage door opener to pay the guy but some things can't be priced and when it comes to animals, don't F** with them thats a button you best not push on us! Thanks for the support folks. You rock, as usual! more to come..................................
  7. We called the authorities OURSELVES cops, humane soc, they said to CALL A TREE SERVICE can you beleive that crap? Screw them man I am so pissed i could scream. I have no money but dangit I am still scraping up nearly $500 to get my 16 yr old cat in for teeth extractions but they have to do blood work, x-rays, etc liver tests but hes worth it. May be easy for some to say 'screw the cats' but I say screw the humans. Pll here came to my aid twice, they felt it was worthy well thats my feelings towards animals who don't share our need to kill and torture for fun but instead want to just live in peace with us. Guess I'm just wierd eh?
  8. Yea I know but after 4 days its cold, hungry, scared, dehydrated. DAMN I am seriously ticked off at the father-in-law man he sends an email and 2/3 way thru it he casually mentions this. We have been suggesting cops/firemen, tree service with sissor lifts, kids who can climb, you name it but nooooooooooo just not important I guess. This stupid tree has just a 6" base so how tall can it be?? The poor critter must be clinging to a branch no bigger than my thumb!! They won't cut the tree down and we are LIVID at his total disregard for a small creature who can climb up but not down like a stupid squirrel GEEZUS!!! :headpop: :headpop: :headpop: :headpop: :headpop: :headpop: :headpop: :headpop:
  9. My in-laws have a female kitty that has been stuck in a SMALL tree for 4 days and will DIE unless somebody helps her. $100 to anyone who can get a blanket spread out under this little tree and shake the poor thing loose. They apparently don't give a $#!t. Rick 303-396-3018
  10. Nah I just have nobody to go with. The guy who got me started on the wheelin gig is always too busy with family or is out of town, and everyone else either turned into @$$holes or have no 4x4's anymore or don't have the same days off as me. Theres always runs posted on CO4x4.org but I don't know those guys and although I would tow them out and/or give them a ride home - they wouldnt do the same for me..a stranger. I learned that hard lesson one day.
  11. Thanks for the save, James. In 12 years of off-roadin thats the first time I have ever had to leave the rig behind. Chains might have gotten me out in front wheel drive but maybe not. That was my last wheelin trip and for someone who used to go weekly I am suffering major withdrawls.
  12. Thanks Scott! Damm I do miss that truck. The sliding rear window, the sunroof. If it hadnt self-destructed, it'd still be out in the street today. Well its my b-day so I am off to the garage to see what kind of trouble I can get into. The new/used steering stabilizer seems to have helped the wobbles but I still havent taken it on the highway yet.
  13. In Colorado, its all 'keep up with the Jones's and do what they do!' and it seems nobody takes that step to do something slightly different and when one does - they are looked at like a troublemaker and weirdo. Well thats me all the way. I will do a different type of light next time. These kinda suck in alot of ways. Ya know, those lighted 'ropes' might be better....?
  14. I just threw it together with stuff I had laying around as kind of a joke. A way to arouse some looks from the normals. We can't decorate the house - HOA rules 'NO NAILS PINS TACKS NOTHING CAN PENETRATE THE WOOD EXTERIOR' and so I said screw it. Did the MJ instead.
  15. You see the cars with the Rudolf noses and antlers, you see the SUV's with the wreaths on the grills, etc.. I'm trying to start something new around here. Let me know if I went too far or not. I can take it!! Scroll down to see what three 100-bulb strings of lights and one 140watt power inverter can do... I get alot of weird looks from grown ups but kids love it.. Rick in CO
  16. Ate a valve and/or rod one day. Had it been a 4.0 I woulda fixed it but I was never a 2.5 TBI fan and that night I said ADIOS AMIGO and sold the whole thing for $400 but FYI it had a lotta problems like a ripped frame and tweeked body and it was time to admit it was no longer worth the hassle.
  17. WHOA! Me on the MJOTM page!! :brows: Took me awhile to figger it out cuz my website expired and the email aint a-workin now neither. So the old reliable email that I will change in my profile is as always XJs4Ever@yahoo.com until further notice.. My wheelin crowd has vanished so ther isnt much to say about this one yet but I would like to share one more pic from a Moab trip in the ol Varmint from a few years ago. One of my faves... Believe me, having a phobia of cliffs anyway, it freaked me the HELL out creeping up to the edge of that rock! Wondering if my foot would slip off the clutch and send me over the edge of a thousand foot drop. All I saw out the front was sky. But I wanted the shot and got it YEA!! BIG NEWS!! The garage rehab is officially done WOOO HOOOO!! I just wired up a new used opener so I will be building a thread to stick up in the pub in a couple days! YOW!
  18. Guys, if you have time to read a 3000 word essay, go here.. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=26624
  19. Brothers - I do not know what to say. Where to begin. I know the first names of every person on my street and I have not seen one of my neighbors since this happened on Halloween. Not one. They 'lookie loo'd' in at my misfortune as the smoke was setting off their alarms and even my next door neighbor looked over the back fence right into my eyes and she said nothing to me. It was a Sunday afternoon for Christ sake [no pun intended] so the whole stoopid block was at home. Nobody can say they didn't know what was going on!! Yet here comes an army of folks who don't even know me, rallied together by a common interest [and the ring-leader who shall remain un-named PETE MONTIE] who can set aside their own hardships and help out someone in need. Someone who has never been a quitter, someone who prides them self on his own self-sufficiency and ability to bounce back from most anything, someone who - like Jeff said 'can't catch a break' but guys - I never give up. This was - I hate to say - dang near the breaking point for me. Another kick in the head in a long streak of bad luck. Four weeks ago, a battery fell on my toe and split it open, but I was at work the next day. here's a pic, before the dead piece fell off... Three weeks ago, my wife was at walmart and her [our] wedding ring literally FELL OFF her finger somewhere. She's been sick [as usual] and her fingers were thin. We think it may not have been in the store but in the parking lot as she loaded groceries. 31 years on her finger and POOF its history. She's devastated. Now this. But, I have been blessed by knowing a few guys who have probably been beaten down themselves, and they know what it means to be left standing there looking into space and asking "what the hell is happening to my life?" So they understand that EVERYONE needs a helping hand sometimes because the burden just becomes too heavy to carry alone. That was me a week ago. Today, I feel like I am not the bastard the rest of the world thinks I must be. Today I feel like I'm no less important than that dude in the Escalade who cut me off on the way to work, laughing into his cell phone without the courtesy of a signal. Totally unaware of the humiliation of how it feels to be stripped of his dignity. I was an electro-mechanical troubleshooter for 12 years. Maintaining/calibrating Flame-ionization detection analyzers and electrical inertia set dynomometers plus having an A&P license to work on aircraft but here I have gone full circle and am doing the same thing I did at age 14. Oil changes and flat repairs. As a guy in his fifties, I can say theres no sunrise on my horizon. Nobody hires us old dudes who know their $#!t. Those jobs go to the kids with degrees cuz they got good grades. Screw the ones with background and experience. So I get this package this afternoon, gotta sign for it. Its from my pal Pete in MI. Ran Moab with me in May 2005, stayed with me n Cin, ran a fave Colorado trail of mine and camped on the mountain with some friends. He had sent a colage of moab pics from that trip and an MJ logo I conjured up which hung in my garage for years till the fire took it. I was bummin over that as much as the loss of tools. I open this box and theres the same pics of my first old MJ the 'Varmint' from the UT trip in a nice frame! I was touched. I took it upstairs and showed it to Cin. She shook her head and smiled. but as I was holding out for her to check out, thats when I saw something taped to the back. An envelope with 'From your Comanche Compadres' written on it. I confess, I figured something was up when I got a PM and a care package of much needed tools from Brent, and my friend Scott suggested I 'go on the Comanche Group'. But I was seriously NOT expecting what I saw in that letter. Nothing on this planet or any other can leave this guy speechless. I can react as well as I am acted upon in any situation get and I never give up regardless who's dishing it out to me but I gotta tell you guys the feeling of having so many looking out for me n Cindy cannot be described. I'm not going to send a generic "thanks" to everyone but I intend to send a private PM or email to each of you because I want to know you all on a personal basis because only a friend would do what you have done for me. SO here's THE DEAL>>> I have a good start on the rebuild process, as well as replacement of most of the power tools lost thanks to some Firemen [who saw what I am dealing with as far as a disabled wife, a friend I have taken in due to loss of job and home, loss of my livelyhood, and some stuff I won't mention at the risk of sounding holy], and with your contribution both spiritually and financially I should be back where I was in a couple weeks. But your generousity was so great that I feel I shall finish the resurrection and return the un-used portion of your gifts. I imagine theres a fund or pool the Club has for emergencies, and if there isn't, there is now because I can promise you there will be a surplus and I'll NOT keep any leftover cash for myself. I will get with Pete and either send a check for the remainder or paypal it or create an account with my own paypal account but when one of you who needs help you will get it right away. Rather than post rebuild pics, I will start a new thread with finished pics after the project is complete as well as an account of materials and monies spent. I hear a cross-thread was posted with pics of the damage so I won't re-post those but maybe on the completed project thread..? I'm all out of words but it felt good to spill my guts to you. You guys are a dying breed. Seems nobody helps anyone anymore but you have my promise I will always be here for you. I don't wake up at night now with that scared feeling anymore and that by itself is a blessing. Love you all. Rick n Cin
  20. Heads up - two guys here [old pals from the MJ list] and one guy from work have some virus infecting their puters. I have been getting emails with no subject line and a link in the body for mail order drugs and stuff. My puter detects the threats now that I trained it to. Basically, if you see an email with no subject from someone in your address book, its probably one of those. It will have nothing but a link in the body such as .... http:// www .gxbt.besdrugsx. com http:// movujivu.t35. com/ http:// novogof.t35. com/ don't CLICK ON THEM!! I told the guy at work about it and either he's not doing anything about it or is still trying to fix it cuz they're still coming every couple days and landing in my spam folder.

    Ball Joints

I shall certainly try my friend. Well the pass side is done hell it took me four hours for the one side! That dude can do em in 3 hrs well A- he's superman or B- he has a shop, air, and all the best tools or C- his stuff is new and not rusted tight or D- hes dang lucky or E-all the above but 4hrs a side is not far from the shop quotes. I destroyed my ball joint press and am using a rental now. Neither have receiver cups to fit Jeeps so I made one out of a coupler for 1.5" chain link fence poles. You'll see the pics when I get them posted. whatta nightmare. damn jeeps :wall: Also could not replace the sleeves for the lower joints you know that the stud end goes in for the steering knuckle? Must be some special tool to remove those and I aint got one so the originals stayed behind.

    Ball Joints

Good idea. I never tried that. She's an '89 and these are the original joints so i've basically accepted the fact that this will SUCK from start to finish. As always, everything gets nevr-seized all over as it goes back on. You may be in there again someday.

    Ball Joints

Yep its a beetch but someones gotta do it. And since a shop charges more than most MJs are worth, I have my work cut out for me tomorrow. I've done this job before but maybe this time I'll record it and post the how-to's here somewhere. The trucks got the DW's at 40mph and I've covered everything else. The shakes intensify with more outside offset rims that set the force more sideways on the joints than vertical and it only takes 1/1,000ths of an inch of play to put the 'DEATH' in death wobble. I own the necessary tools and the parts I get at cost so $99 for the whole project uppers and lowers. I just hope I don't wreck the bearing hub assemblies pulling them out like I did the XJ. Probly will so this adventure may triple in cost before the weekends over. Hows everybody doin? Lifes NOT good around here so I just don't have the casual time to hang out here like the good ol days. But I do think of you all constantly. The Moab trip with Pete in May 2005 was my last vacation. Havent had one since. Not even a three day weekend in four years for me but hey you get used to it. I'll be back.... :typing:
  24. WASSUP ROB?! Well I repl'd the resistor but no luck. Even started to smoke that one. The wire back to the pumps good I metered that, but the other wire vanishes into a mass of wiring that I've no clue where it goes from there. This is yet another in a long line of problems lately that are making me think "SELL THE P.O.S.!!" :wall:
