I think I found my next Comanche - PROGRESS PICS UP
XJs4Ever replied to XJs4Ever's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Awesome, Don! Very clean. If its cool with you I'd like to put your write up in my 'how-to' page of my Jeep site. I just used another aux fan but its not real big and overheating is still an issue so I will opt for a bigger fan. I like your use of the low profile bolts. I didnt have any so I just hacksawed my studs off at the nuts [was in a hurry] and it [fan] misses the studs by about 1/8". Its loud as hell tho! -

Well it failed the emissions test - barely. HC's failed at 3.267 GPM and the limit is 3.0 GPM so I'm putting in 4qts of cheap crappy oil and 2qts of ATF and am gonna run that for about 15 min then drain it all out and do a decent oil change with Valvoline or Castrol. Also going to hike up the idle from 700 to about 950 cuz the HC's spiked at idle and ran low at high RPM. I changed the oil about 20 miles ago or less but even after I changed it the oil looked like poo so it needs a good flushing out. The wires/cap/rotor/plugs are new so the guy must have made a feeble attempt to get it to run right but with all the vac leaks, nothing was gonna fix it cept fixing the leaks. Oh well I got a 60 day temp tag but only have 10 days to get a retest done so out to the garage I go. I've never been one o them 'wait til the last minute' types. That'll screw ya every time. -

Beauty! Hey maybe you can tell me where a guy can get the 'Jeep' letters for the tailgate? Mine are gone or painted over and I don't do stealerships for anything. Image Not Found -
Having a white XJ with tinted glass I have really learned to appreciate the cool inside on a hot day. Now I have a white MJ and will be tinting the side and rear glass soon, and fixing the A/C.

I believe its just a mercury switch inside or some other dealio thats position specific. I can try to find a part # for the bulb or you can get a test light and see if you have 12v going to the light with the hood up. If so and no light then its the bulb. I have a spare if you need it and can ship it once we determine thats the prob. -

Yea it was sliding around in back cuz the cable is missing from the winch under the bed so I drilled a 7/16" hole in the side of the bedrail and bolted the spare there until I replace the winch. Funny thing is, I found an MJ in the boneyard last week and couldn't get to the winch in that one to remove it cuz they had the truck sitting on rims that were stacked up under the bed - right under the winch! So I need to go back and try to pry them wheels out from under it so I can get to the crank. I want my spare under the bed where it belongs. -
all's I can say is... WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dang thats a beauty for sure!! holy $#!t

Welll, shoot! I guess I'll re-do it all dangit!! :headpop: Mmmm-kay here we go agin! First I added the under hood light with the long recoil wire that reaches the rear bumper. I also put in a gas strut in place of the prop rod but it was too tuff and bent the mounts so it got removed. Image Not Found Then I removed the defunked worn out fan clutch and popped in another XJ aux fan Image Not Found Then went in the awesome 91 XJ Burgundy interior. Buckets, console, steerin wheel, clock and 12v socket. Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found Last I removed and re-painted all the trim. Headlight bezels, grill, rear bumper, etc. Image Not Found Image Not Found Now I am running 10ga. wire for the amp, remote and RCA's to pump up the sound system. The lift will begin sometime next week. Priorities ya know. :brows: -

Upgrading the 'new' MJ's interior
XJs4Ever replied to XJs4Ever's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
I'd say its do-able. I was lookin at these buckets when I was drilling out the rivets to attach the buckets to the bench framework and it looks like the fabric peels off. I was wondering cuz I was thinkin of machine washing them but changed my mind. The washer probly eat them so I used a pressure washer on them and that worked great. -
Some junkyard visitation days are just better than others. Wednesday I not only found the bucket seats/steering wheel/center console I wanted, but they're in perfect shape, AND they all match my trucks interior. I'm still geekin out about it. I got the ralleye steering wheel and bucket seats in and will have the console trimmed and in this afternoon. Also installed the digital clock and 12v socket that mine didn't have. I tinted the windows at 5% but geez I couldn't see out so I'm doing it in 20% tomorrow. All this came out of a 91 XJ and unfortunately it was a 4dr so the backrests won't tilt up but when you see them you say the same thing I did - "I can live with it". But it gets better - I found a set of 2" XJcoil spacers - JUST SITTIN THERE!! I grabbed those and three sets of stock spacers that are about 1/2" thick and those will be the lift that goes on this Wednesday. I'm just doing an AAL and shackles in the back. There will of course be pics [before/after] when its done.

Anyone running 3:55 gears with a 5 speed?
XJs4Ever replied to JohnQ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Is that the one with the disc brakes? There are a few ZJ's at the yard. I wonder, nah too much hassle to spring The 8.25 as used in the XJ did not have disc brakes. Dunno if they ever used the 8.25 in the ZJ. I believe the ZJs all got either the Dana 35 or the crappy aluminum "Dana 44" Yea I know all that. I was just thinkin out loud. The ZJ's all had the quadralink which was eight control arms. Coils all four corners, and on most - 4whl disc. Trust me I know this stuff. I was just sayin I wouldnt want to convert ZJ to XJ rear springs. Coils in the rear would be cool but that would involve arms - one way or the other control or long but arms either way -

I'd like to find a Ford 8.25 but like I've said a hundred times there just aint none in the boneyards here so I'll look for the ol reliable D35 with 3.55's. I did however score major parts today in a junkyard run but thats a bigass post yet to come I just gotta get pics after the works done. -

The boneyards around here never have any Jeeps that new in them so I'll probly have to settle for what I can get. I'm going tomorrow to see what I can find. I also will be getting a clock and cig lighter socket - NEITHER OF WHICH THIS TRUCK HAS! Was a cig lighter actually an option??? :huh???: -

Did u swap the whole axle or re-gear? If u swapped axles were they XJ or mJ? I really want to learn to re-gear but aint real hip with setting backlash -
Yea, all kinds.......Here's a sample. Even thought that's listed for a Cherokee, remember, most all engine parts from '87 thru '90 are the same, and body parts from the 'B' pillar forward are the same for the Comanche, from '84 thru '96 . The doors are the same from a 4 door XJ, and the seats are a little different. And........Welcome :waving: don't feel bad i'm still figgerin this all out too

So far everythings workin ok ever since I lobotomized the hard drive and reloaded all my operation system and stuff. That was really P'in me off but no problems now. Anyone else report the same symptoms?

I said it, didn't I say it? I was sure I had a vacuum leak that was causing my 89 to run fast and rich and this afternoon after work I got in there and was determined to find out why that sucker ran at 1700 rpm and the exhaust made yer eyes water. Well I found three leaks just in the line from the throttle body to the MAP sensor. I repaired those and OMG the truck runs smooth as glass and the exhaust doesn't kill the dog next door even tho I wish it would. Next is troubleshooting the A/C which is a story all its own but at least I beleive this truck will pass an emissions test now. Oh ya also I removed all the front end trim like grill, headlight bezels, hood trim etc and painted it all blck and cut off all the busted up lower valance plastic and it looks sooo much bedda. A dude from Boulder is coming out tomorrow to buy the 2" wheel spacers off it so I guess a lift and 31's is coming soon eh? :brows:

Cool man - another 89 MJ'er. We'll be talking bro. Later Rick

Does your EGR function normal? If you shut off a hot truck for a few minutes, then fire it up again, does it idle rough then? (meaning that the engine isn't exactly "cold", but the computer is still going through the pre-flight checklist) I dunno man. It runs fast, like 1,200 rpm all the time and rough and rich like a vac leak but I have not found one. Also I ran outta gas today and the gauge read 1/8 tank so I gotta calibrate that somehow too. PLUS [i love how we find all these problems the owner knew about and didnt tell us] the fan clutch is shot. I can stick my hand in the fan at ide and stop it, and even spin it the other way while its running. May be why it was overheating before. He wired the aux fan to a toggle switch but I will replace the fan. Also, ah hell I forgot the next 'also' but it has alot of kinks I gotta work out but ya know what - its a Comanche and they're even fun to work on when stuffs busted. I have access to a pair of 1983 Bronco D44 axles free if I want them. The idea of those plus manual hubs really excites me but I wanted to ask you how much of a PITA are they to adapt. I have no idea what gears they are but I got 3.07's so they can't be worse eh? I got a welder and am a decent/good welder and fabricator. -
As some may have figgerd out already, I'm one happy lil sumbeetch cuz I gots me another Comanche aka: best dang trucks on the road. Anyhoo, its a 1989 shorty with the 4.0L and five speed trans, NP231 t-case, D35 rear end and vacuum disconnect front D30. The tags on the diff covers are unreadable but I'm thinking this girls got 3.07's in her. Does that sound right to anyone else? If thats the case I will eventually get some 3.55's out of an XJ to replace these. 3.73's are harder to come by and anything lower than that - fergit it! Not around here. I know MJ rear axles are different but I am sure I can make them work with a little welding and fabbing of perches and shock mounts. I'll no doubt disable the proportioning valve. I didnt need it before on my 86.
-
it does smooth out eventually but thats still wrong. I am going to replace the O2 sensor cuz it appears to be OEM and the plugs/wires/cap/rotor are new. The MAP sensor is hooked up and the vacuum lines intact but I unplugged the O2 sensor from my 89 XJ once and it pretty much did nothing so I am guessing I have something else going on. Maybe the ECM or one of the dozen other sensors but I could use some input on this one. Thanks in advance. Rick in CO
