calling all Gear Gods (4.88s)
raviolli replied to raviolli's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
these gears have less than 3k on them and have been sitting in the box (so he says). he's asking $65. I'm also waiting to find out an installation price from a friend of a friend. My friend dropped a 4bt in a ranger back when we were going to school together. very knowledgeable kid. truck turned out beautifully as well and in tip top shape. so when he says this guy helped him with the stuff he couldnt do himself, i trust his work more than some shop i have yet to find. anyways, thank you for your input. i just want to be sure theres nothing I'm missin as far as compatibility. as far as i know, ring and pinions from a dana 44 are all the same aside from the tooth count...but thats just my understanding. so please correct me if I'm wrong.....or confirm if I'm not I'm not ready to jump into it yet, still need to get the other set and of course the extra $$$ -
alright, so i found a guy locally selling one set of 4.88 gears for a dana 44 for a decent price. I'm not an expert on the whole regearing thing, thats why I'm not going to do it myself, but i wanna know one thing before i go pick them up. the gears are out of an '04 wrangler. everything should fit, right? he also has a standard carrier to fit, and i plan on lockers down the road. ill acquire the parts to do both axles at once, but i want to make sure I'm not getting parts i can't use

Thanks Don i think i had them facing away but i really can't remember. ill get back once i have the wheels off to try again. but any 2 cents helps

yeah...those doohickies can someone pleeaassee post a picture of how these are supposed to be installed? when i got my calipers from rockauto, only one came with them. i called them, and they told me they werent even supposed to come with clips. Doesnt make much sense to me, considering there were calipers, semi-loaded calipers, and loaded calipers available. i ordered the loaded calipers...well if you think about it, the only things that can come with them are the pads and the clips so if my loaded ones werent supposed to have the clips, what do the semi-loaded ones come with? :shake: anyways, i ordered two more, giving me a total of four....but i still couldnt figure out how to install them. my old ones were rusted and broken, looking nothing like these. so i fiddled for a while, thought i had it right, but it was a PITA and they still popped off before i could get both pads on. so right now i have everything together with NO clips. i still need to add fluid and bleed the system, but i need to put the clips on too and havent found any info on HOW they go on can anyone help me?? :help:

1988 Jeep Comanche Pioneer the day i towed it home: as it sits on 5/5/2012: sitting on 32x10.5xr15 Mud Rovers with 3" RC springs and (true) 2" coil spacers up front and 4.5" hell creek spring in the rear. Originally: 150ci 2.5L I4 / AX-4 / TC: n/a (2wd) / front: dead axle (2wd) / rear: Dana35 (3.55) / SWB as of 5/5/2012: 150ci 2.5L I4 (soon to be 4.0L I6) / Ax-4 (Peugeot Ba-10/5spd sitting in garage) / TC: n/a (AMC-238 sitting in garage) / front: Dana30 (3.07) / rear: Dana44 (3.07) *going to re-gear, probably to 4.88s and also install front and rear lockers* Build date: unknown - sticker on door is GONE Current Location: Titusville, FL (in my driveway) Status: still no tags, but driven from time to time around the neighborhood while awaiting more work. still need to find a 4.0L/harness (and everything needed for motor swap) Notes: aside form all the new parts purchased and installed by yours truly, the most sentimental thing about this jeep (I think) would have to be the floor boards. all sheet metal used to repair the hideous floor rust was taken from a single fender (that i had to hammer flat, cut, trim, bend, and weld) off of a friends car that i was inside when he rolled it. It will always be a memory...that lives under my feet. and to go along with that.... i got this.. just in case it happens again Current Owner: ME!

if you happen to go back and find this red MJ still sitting there, could you find out the price on that windshield visor thing? I'm not sure if i would like it on my truck or not... uber rare moon visor, snag it up!!! i want it I highly doubt that particular MJ is even still there, suffice to say. do you know their phone number, or at least the name of the JY so i can look it up? Fruitland Park is probably about an hour and a half to 2 hours away from me. Id make the drive if I found out it was still there -

just about every truck tailgate comes off this way. maybe there are some that don't, but none that i know of :dunno: but yeah, thats why most of the new trucks on the road today have locks on the tailgate....because you only need your own two hands to remove a tailgate, as long as you can drop it. and unfortunately, we need every bit of theft protection we can get these days because :USAflag: isnt what it used to be

and for the colorado pics... here's the first days doings my buddy and i had some fun just playin around in a field right outside of buckley airforce base where he works. we were there a good portion of the day....left and came back to shoot some vids with his camera instead of my phone needless to say, we werent able to come back because we lost all use of 4wd :shake: luckily he has locking hubs so we were able to slowly get out in 2wd and drive home. after a while though we noticed the inner shaft was walking its way out of the housing and binding on the outer yoke, causing a lack of steering. we almost veered off the road a few times just trying to turn onto a street because he couldnt cut it tight enough. so while he was out for his 24 hour shift, i started working on getting the shafts out. got em out but had to put the outer shaft back in to get the wheel on. he was in the process of moving (or in the process of getting the keys to the new house rather) so we needed the truck in driveable condition. the house was only around the corner i had to wait til he got back from his shift to finish because he still had the keys, and i needed to turn the wheels to the left to continue  sooo....i walked to the store, got some munchies, and had me a lil smokey and the bandit marathon  after finishing up with the truck the next day, we tackled the next project....putting in a new tranny in his '85 z28. it actually only took us a few hours to pull this off, even while jacking up the car on numerous cinder blocks, on a muddy, icy incline, and laying underneath the car on top of melting ice and mud while the wind is blowing and its below freezing. best day of my trip to do something like that, let me tell ya there was no time for pics in the process, but it got done and we had her runnin by sundown

well it seems i never have the time to post stuff on here anymore so every update is a pretty massive one lol. ive got my rear axle in and its sittin on all four tires again  ive got lots of pics and ill even throw in a few from Colorado ...anywayss...i pulled out the ol' 35 next to the 44 (this was before my leaf springs came in) took about 3 weeks, but i finally got em next to the old ones (WITH add-a-leafs still in the old packs) ..i also installed my dads old fog lights because he bought new ones for his truck and put in my 4x4 shifter, even though its not connected to anything (this was before the springs came in) ..back to the serious stuff.. got this far and realized i needed to buy bigger U-bolts. i knew the 44 was thicker, but somehow it slipped my mind :shake: and of course none of the local stores had any the right size so i ordered some from skyjacker ^finally back on the ground. forgot i needed to cut my U-bolts to tighten them  andddd...in daylight.... can't wait to drive it again. its driving me mad :wall: but of course all of the nuts on the brake lines rounded out so ill have to replace them all on top of extending them. i guess thats my luck other than that, its just longer shocks, new steering stabilizer, and adjustable track bar. then i can get some tags on it. after that ill be hunting for my 4.0 to do the other half of the swap

UFO's man....theyre out there :dunce: They might not have a beam of light yet that's powerful enough to suck up such an awesome machine, but they sure are trying. either that or theyve already had their way with you and erased your memory.......again....and again and again try wrapping your MJ in tin foil :peek: -

here's a picture heavy update for yall since i havent posted in a while. i got my dana 30 all cleaned up and under the truck with a total of 5" of lift  (just a couple of before shots underneath) ...it took me a while to get this far due to my two jobs and my body not wanting to get out of bed when it doesnt have to i actually had to turn the 2wd axle parallel to the truck itself to break it free of the pitman arm but i eventually got it as you can see at this point, i had my coil spacers so i went ahead and threw them on. then moved the D30 from the side of the house to the driveway. that mother is heavy!!! sprayed some degreaser on it and cracked open a few more beers  then hosed it down and called it a night. next day i took a rag to it and gave it some elbow grease. it came out lookin pretty good for an axle that came out of a truck that was on fire  i figured out that when youre fighting one of these by yourself for alignment, you start to get pretty creative with jacks, stands, cinder blocks, and anything else around lol finally got all control arms hooked up and the coil springs in. got the tires on, whole thing down, and even managed to make the sway bar reach. put the shocks from the 3" kit in and theyre pretty much maxed out. brake lines are still a no-go though...the bolts are completely rounded off  ...in daylight... now ive got the D44 on jackstands ready for a good cleanin :brows: i fly out to colorado in the morning for a week though, so itll be a while before any more updates. i still need to order the leaf packs before i can even put the 44 in. (the rear is still sittin at 3" AAL on saggy stock leafs with 5" up front) so hopefully once i get my tax moneys ill be able to order the 4.5" packs from hell creek, some longer shocks, and maybe ill still have enough for the adjustable track bar and steering stabilizer shock....but we'll see how much $$$ is spent on vacation

alright so here's the truck i got my parts from for my swap. the guy just wants to be rid of it and i told him id post it on here because i knew some of you guys would be interested in some body parts being as clean as it is. he really wants to sell the whole thing as is (he told me $300 for everything there but i can't guarantee that, the price is between the buyer and the seller) the truck is very clean. very VERY little rust (if any). theres a few dents here and there as usual. there was a fire in the engine bay, so the motor was seized from the firefighters putting out the fire. i already took the front and rear axles for my swap plus the tranny, transfer case, driveshafts, and shifter linkage. this is just a body sitting here (edgewater/maytown area in central florida) ill try to get a couple more pics on here but ill have to have him send the pics to me for me to upload them. this is the only one i have. if anyones interested, ill be the middle man for means of communication, since he's not a member. ill let him know if somebodys interested and what it is they want, then ill give an address or phone number so they can work it out. (he prefers not to ship anything - would like to sell the entire thing as is, if possible)

find out from a dealer with your VIN the only place i can think of for the paint code on our trucks would be the glovebox :dunno: but i know my sticker is missing too. you could always try matching it. if you do that, make sure you choose a spot thats been covered for the majority of its life so its closest to the factory color (not faded or weathered) but make sure to clean the area and allow natural light when choosing colors. theres also a gun-like device that scans the paint just by putting it against the vehicle and with the press of a button, it gives you the mixture for that exact color. i bet if you went to a automotive paint supply store, theyd have one

looks great man  can't wait to get mine, except I'm going with the 4.5" springs. i ordered my coils spacers earlier, but before i can order anything else, i have to go pay for my axles and haul em home I'm gonna have some fun cleanin up the parts once i get them home :ack:
