Thanks for the advice and I passed on the early tranny. Picked up a '93 4wd AW4 with the convertor today. I understand that my '91 usues a mechanical speedo and the '93 uses an electronic speedo. As I have the '91 tranny to cannabalize, what is going to be the easiest way to get the speedo in my '91 to function? (anyone have an inexpensive 23 spline 231 within an hour or so of Dayton, OH?)

3" Suspension Lift Kits?
Incommando replied to kawaboy13's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Although the adjustable stuff is dandy, conventional wisdom is that it is not required until you get to 4-4.5" of lift. I had terribile experience with Rough Country and their products. Even their defenders admit that it takes them several tries to get an order right, and their customer service, IMHO, is horrible. Hell Creek's service was dandy :clapping: -
There is a SMOKING deal on a set of D44 4.10's in the for sale section. The approproate carriers are pretty cheap: I scored my last carier from fleabay for $27 shipped and it has never been installed.
-
D44 carrier break is 3.73-down and 3.92-up. Thick gears to use the lower series carrier with 4.10's are a bit more pricey. 3.55 D30's are pretty cheap and swapping the front would probably be the cheapest, but swapping the D44 to 4.10 would be the best performance.

Installed the front part ofa RC 4.5" lift
Incommando replied to btm24's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I have actually said many times that Rough Country is a terrible company and should have included that caveat. I mainly posted up because an earlier post recommended drilling a new hole 1/2" over. That being said, redrilling track bar mount caused no handling issues and the truck got into alignment spec just fine. -
Installed the front part ofa RC 4.5" lift
Incommando replied to btm24's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Rough Country's own instructions for the 4.5" lift is to drill a new hole 3/4" toward the center of the truck. -
Someone with more info will chime in but IIRC... TJ Rubicon front is the only near direct swap but really isn't a true D44 to purists.... Most use HP D44's from Fords but they are wider and present mounting problems to keep the coils straight. The lug patterns are different too. Wagoneer fronts are also used but are low pinion and have a different lug pattern as well.

jeep outlaw
Incommando replied to STERLING STINGER's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
The engine, ignition, axles, t-case shifter, brow, etc.. all point to it being a 1980 as the year when all of those pieces were put together. Good eye. -
The covers from the D44 and D60 are different size. The factory cover from the D60 and D70 are different sizes BUT they use the same bolt pattern. You can put the physically smaller D60 cover on a D70, and this is done when people shave there D70's. Sorry, I do not have the measurements.

jeep outlaw
Incommando replied to STERLING STINGER's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
You never heard of these because they do not exist. Just some hang-over induced pile o' (insert word of choice here) with a bunch of jeep names added to it. "Hey, aren't da jep trucks called copmanchero's or sumtin'? Let's call it a comanche outlaw..." :wall: As far as they level of customization: the rear shackles are, IMHO, death traps. That is probably an indication of the whole level of fab on this POS and a good reason why people whose family tree doesn't branch shouldn't be allowed to modify or sell vehicles. All it is missing is wide whitewalls and curb feelers. Stupid semi stacks on a pick-up are more played out then ricer wings on a Honda. And the "letterin" in the grille??? If that is a 1973 drivetrain I will eat my hat. That ignition system was a '78 or newer and does not look swapped in. The transfer case is from the '80's as are the headlights ('79 or newer.) The axles (AMC M23 rear) also indicate that the thing is actually am '80-'85 J10. They don't list the VIN because this is such a hodgepodge... I am hoping that they never got around to the ammeter bypass mod and it burns to the ground so it doesn't have to look at itself in mud puddles as it drives past..... :peek: -
NWS confirmed it was an F-0 tornado but the hail caused most of the damage.
-
I will most likely re-use the convertor that is in the truck know as I know it functions properly. Thanks for the info.

All of my vehicles were inside. Neighbor's Oldsmobile took a series of direct hits from the hail: Image Not Found Every expposed vehicle in the neighborhood looks like that. Two fire trucks responding to a tree that had fallen on a moving car, injuring and trapping the driver, about a half mile from my place were severely damaged as well, but none of the firefighters were injured. The wind plastered wet leaves so tightly onto everything they will likely have to be power-washed off. My roof vent cap is half off, I had 7 window screens torn out, and 3 ornamental shutters were shattered. Who knows what condition the roof is in once it gets inspected. In 2002 this neighborhood was hit so hard with hail that it wound up almost 12" deep. That storm broke out ALL of my windows and beat the vinyl siding right off of the house and destroyed many of the shingles.

80+ mph winds and hail reaching nearly 4" in diameter. This pic was taken a full hour ofter the hail fell. Insurance companies are going to be busy here tomorrow.

Thank you. I will look at this set over the weekend

The '91 is already an AW4. I have axles, driveshafts, etc... already. I know the '87 would be the 21-spline (weaker) set-up, but I do not know if the tranny will integrate seemlessly with my current TCU/ECU etc... based on the switch from Renix to OBD-1/H.O. I am not concefned about it not turning the "4wd" light on (seeing it is in 4wd is what the shift lever is for :D ) just that if I bolt it to my current engine will the tranny funtion correctly?

chevy rear drop shackles ?
Incommando replied to Glenn Moyer's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Image Not Found Although 31's fit on a stock 4x2 I agree that they look too stuffed. Most report 1.5-2" of lift with the parts store shackles & spacers. I have't done it myself. -
Congratulations to you both

Engine, tranny and axle ratios
Incommando replied to 89Tonto's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
IMHO only the front would be worth anything. With a 2.5/auto, I am betting the rear would be a D35 and, even with 4.56's, basically worthless. Hard to give away turdy5's around here. $500 seems a bit steep unless it s an M20/D44 rear. -

Street tires on & earning its keep: about 5 loads of mulch today... -
NOTE: Go to post #23 for the lift & mods began on 3/3/14. This project stalled for 3 years and posts 1-22 are from the original plans made in 2011 As part of my habit of buying basket cases where previous owners partially disassemble jeeps for no apparent reason and then I get a jeep with boxes and bags of parts to sort through and piece back together, I picked up this '91 Pioneer 4x2. 4.0/AW4/Turdy-5. Headliner is MIA and it was missing many of the parts shown in the pics above as they were taken off before I got it. But it does have delay wipers and cruise as well as a functioning factory sliding window. The remaining interior is actually pretty decent. Unfortunately, this thing was hit in a bizarre manner and then apparently left to fester for years uncounted. The metal in this area is all pretty weak. Repair would be intense and it may just get painted over to stop the rot and left as-is because it is intended to be a trail bomber anyway. Door still works though. I pays my monies for a pig in a poke as it was undrivable and had no exhaust past the head pipe. The engine coulda been knocking pretty good and you could not have heard it. Put it on the dolly and drag it home. Get the parts boxes & bolt bags out and put the front end body pieces and grill back together. Put the dash back and discover that, instead of just unplugging the am/fm/cassette w/bass & treble control, some PO cut the wires to pull the radio :hmm: The also pulled the speakers and the color-coded wires to them are gone. SPent a little less then $50 on piecing together a cat-delete exhaust system featuring a cherry bomb glass pack. Rear brakes are shot with both wheel cyl.'s leaking. Not going to fix them as the rear is going bye-bye (see below). Fire that puppy up and guess what? No knocking so far! Odo shows 217K but it looks like the engine has been out so it probably has fewer miles than that. OH; Some PO couldn't ( or wouldn't) get the rust-welded on rims off and spray bombed the rims in white while they were on the truck..overspray city and looks nasty. WTH goes through peoples' minds? The tires are dry rotted relics from the pre-p-metric measurement days and you think painting the nasty factory rims is important??? Squeeze some 265/70/16 street tires that I have laying around onto the rig (pics later) once the torch and BFH persuade the junk tires/rims to part ways with the truck. These are about equal to a 31x10.5x15 but just squeek by for street duty as the tread is very tame. Moment of truth: Tag & insure that puppy and it is time to cruise! Guess what? In a very limited 10-mile shake down run the truck ran well, shifted fine, and braked OK as I don't think most MJ rear brakes do much on an empty truck anyway. Yes an axle swap is coming. I have a set of '98 XJ axles for it: HP D30 3.55 front and matching 8.25 open rear. I also have a 3.55 8.25 rear with welded spiders in case I go the "almost all trail runner" route. Picked up some used RE 4.5" front coils, adjustable lower CA's, an adjustable track bar, and made plans to SOA the rear when I slip the 8.25 in. I need to find a cheap tranny/t-case with shifter and front DS to get the ball rolling. Well, I get paid once a month so I need to find these things AFTER 6/1/11...lol. More to come unless a sudden bout of sanity sets in and I abandon this project....
