Ok, I am prepping for my engine swap and I realized I forgot to order a new crankshaft position sensor. I will be using the 89 Renix wiring harness with a 96 4.0 and a 97 AX-15. For which 4.0 do I order the CPS for?

You could get the AMC 20 in 86 MJs (like yours). It wasn’t available after that though.

I can definitely look at those. I was thinking of doing POR15 on the underside, but I am open to suggestions like yours. I will take a look at them Chassis Saver is basically POR-15 with fewer harmful chemicals.

Fluid Film, Chassis Saver (to paint over current surface rust), and very frequent car washes are a must then.

4wd and 2wd have the same brakes. I understand wanting bigger tires though.

Welcome! I live in WI. I will also say, do not drive these trucks year round. The salt will eat then regardless of undercoating.

I would pull the engine and rebuild it. Who knows what could've gotten in some of the waterjackets or other places. If you don't want to rebuild it, I'd buy a running Jeep with a 4.0 and swap it in. If you have a Renix, I'd try to find a 87-90.

Many people use their MJs for different things. I want to know what you use yours for! Mine is my daily driver from spring through fall and my car show truck, but I also use it for hauling and towing things.

6 month(ish) later review. I still like it, I've towed my garden tractor with it and hauled some heavier parts in the bed and had no squatting, which I had before even if I just sat on the tailgate. I wouldn't call them a substitute for Metric Ton leaf springs though, as I believe those have 2 overload springs, I only have the 1. This would be a low-buck alternative if you can't yet afford/don't want the stiffer ride of the Metric Ton springs, but want your towing/payload bumped up a little bit. I think the ride is a little bit softer than a 2017 JKU. I also seems to corner better now because of the stiffer springs-it stays flatter, almost like it has a rear sway bar, but it does not have a rear sway bar. That may be a future upgrade though.

Honestly, I don't think I would convert a 2wd truck to 4wd. If you live in the rust belt, you shouldn't drive the truck in the winter because they are rare and climbing in value, and if you live in the south, you won't probably need 4wd for the snow. There are quite a few people in AZ that do mild wheeling with their 2wd trucks.

Here are 2 threads that have done 4x4 swaps. Both of these guys did the swap well if I remember correct.

I have some quick questions before I go about answering your questions. Is your truck a 5 speed or an automatic? The only 5 speeds that came in MJs were manuals. Yes, the easiest way would be to buy a similar year XJ (I'd look for an 87-90 because you have a Renix truck) and then swap the transmission/transfer case/front driveshaft/front axle into your MJ. Then you will only need to get your stock rear driveshaft shortened (~1 foot if I remember right). I will link some threads that cover this for you.

If you want to try to scan another truck to see if that makes a difference, you could always come up near me unless you want to scan a closer truck.
