Swampy replied to Swampy's topic in MJ Hardcore Tech: Epic Journeys to Greatness
I picked up an 8.25 out of a 2000 cherokee. I know its a 29 spline axles and an open diff. I don't know what gears it has, i have to take the diff cover off and start counting teeth I also have adjustable upper and lower control arms that I have to install in Wendy as well -

Sorry I have kept you guys in the dark. Been doimg a lot of work on the comanche, and havemt really updated the thread so here it is Most importantly is that the ax15 swap and transfer case are in the jeep I also installed the front driveshaft, I picked it up from @88whitemanche already cut for a 4.5 lift Also got my boostwerks tcase linkage -
Yeah its really tempting, maybe when I want to go bigger I'll go with their 489 front and rear axles. but for now decided to go with an 8.25 as I have the parts to swap it in because it came with my lift kit

Always trying to help others, as I have been helped. I'm still sort of new to comanche's and more so this is my first jeep. The learning curve is steep and continues to climb. Best I can do is provide info on what I have experienced/read here on the forum or lead you to someone who knows more. FOR THE LOVE OF JEEP

How did you paint it? With rattle cans? Because if so it looks amazing. Also for the por15 how do you apply it? Just brush or roll it on?- 146 replies

If there are no holes use an angle grinder or sand paper or whatever you have really and get to bare metal or as close to it as possible. Then use por15 or something similar to prevent future rust. If there are holes in the floor there are a few option 1 (the best option) cut out the rust and replace the material with an aftermarket floor pan or make your own. - can be a bit tedious if you don't know how to weld or don't have proper equipment 2 (budget/sorta temporary option) bondo depending how big the holes are, you can also use fiberglass etc 3 (not recommened) just leave the holes as is

I unbolted it from the trans but I can't get the mounting plate off the bottom. Also I would slid it up but how do I get over that huge change in diameter (picture #2) -
This is what you are looking for @HOrnbrod

I can buy an 8.8 or 8 25 both for right around $150. But most of the work that I would have to do to it I can't do myself, regearing the axle, welding new perches, shock mounts etc. I would love to learn but I would rather not learn on something that is going to be driven everyday. I know I can find an 8.8 with 4.10 gears and a limited slip in a JY but with the 35's i want to run it won't be a low enough gear for the 4cly

Hey Just found this out today, not sure how many of you are interested or care about this but I think it is exciting stuff. East Coast Gear Supply is now offering bolt complete axle swaps for mj's! I know they did cherokees and other jeeps for a while but its cool that now you can go to their website, setup what a rear axle and have it delivered and just bolt it up to your truck. They have serveral options, 8.8, 44, and there homebrew 489 rear axles. You can also order the xj fronts for our mjs. It may not be the full bolt 1 ton axle swaps some guys want but I think it is cool none the less. I was actually pricing out an 8.8 swap vs 8.25 swap for my mj and after regearing, locker, perches and all. I am thinking about just saving up and ordering an 8.8 mj axle from ECGS and be done with it. I will price it out again if I do it on my own but this bolt in option does catch my eye

I am preppimg for the ax15 swap. I got out the old shifter but does anyone know how to get out thay rubber cover for the hole in the floorpan with out cutting it off? -
For the prothane progessive bumps do you need a cap on top of them? or can you run it in the coil spring without the cap?
-
glad to know those daystar ones fit. I know there are two different parts numbers for pre-9 and post 97 when I was looking today don't remember if it was daystar, or rubicon express. Also I would like to know how those progressive stops work. Do you just throw them into the coil and that's that?
-
I was looking at bumpstops for the front of my mj. I saw some that just pop in place of the stock ones but they had 2 different diameters. One was 1.5 inches, the other was 2 inches. How do I know which one to order. I also checked those progressive ones.. they look good

I'm pretty sure I have that. Let me double check

Lee helped me by giving me some simple directions. You have to take the tach all the way out. I believe it is just the 5 screws in the back. Once it is all out, on the top of the little circuit board there is a small plastic phillips head screw. turn it all the way clockwise till it stops. And you have just adjust your tach for a 2.5l. then just put everything back into place how it was -

I also got the gauge cluster from a fellow member her on the forum. @schardein Thanks again I got it swapped in and I couldnt be happier I did adjust the tach before installing the new cluster because it came from a 4.0l and I have a 2.5l -

Today I did something.... chop chop. Cutting the 88 fenders like the 97+ fenders. My only concern is the lack of support behind that front bottom corner now. -
Mostly height. Looking for a 33-34" tire. But would like a nice ratio of width and height. I like the kanati's
