Actually now that I look closer, it seems to have a J10 or J30 ("new model name"?) badge on the quarterpanel. Still pretty hurl-o-riffic.

Yep throw it in neutral and roll it... Might want to remove the rear driveshaft just in case vibration throws the case into gear, but on a 92 you're going to have to tie a plastic bag over the rear output on the TC. No big deal as long as you know to do it.

WTF IS that? Some sort of horrible demented concept vehicle? It looks like an XK, an M715, a Hummer, and some modern pickup (early 00s Ford Explorer SUT?) had a terrible accident.

If/when I buy enough land to park them on, I want to have an M35 (or the 5 ton variant, I guess, M54? I forget), an M715, and a J10 or J20, in that order. I could do without the M715 or the J-truck, but the M35/5ton is REQUIRED. Why? To haul my other jeeps back home when they break down or I break em wheeling :rotf: An XJ will fit in the bed of an M35 and only hang off by about a foot. Not sure how close a SWB MJ comes to fitting, but I could definitely flat tow one no problem... while carrying an XJ.

All ABS equipped XJs came with 35s. Other than that, most of em were 8.25s (at least around here) and it seems like they used 35s when they ran out of 8.25s. Question's already been answered - basically, IMO if you are going to have to weld perches anyways you may as well get a 96.5-up (gotta pull the cover and check splines on 96s, 97s were all 29) 29 spline 8.25" or a Ford 8.8" since most rearends cost the same amount at the junkyard.

My MJ gets 16mpg combined with me driving it like I stole it, 18 combined if I drive it sanely, and 23.something driving from rausch creek to massachusetts doing 55-65 the whole way... with 3/4 of a ton of stuff in it! I got into my MJ because one of my friends on NAXJA posted a link to a rusty 600 dollar MJ on CL and said "someone buy this so I don't", didn't have the cash so I convinced a friend of mine he wanted it, he drove it for a few months and put a few hundred bucks in parts into it (which I helped install, so I know it was done right), then got another car and sold it to me for 800. Been daily driving it ever since.

Definitely keep as much of all of them as you can Where are you at? Does that junker one you got have a rear slider window? a friend of mine is looking for one if you don't want it yourself...

Engine bay harness is exactly the same afaik, the cab harness is different due to the lack of a back seat, different tail light / fuel pump setup, cargo light + associated switch, no rear wiper switch, etc. -
I generally solve all my problems with a good soak + scrub in gasoline and then hose it off with brakleen afterwards. If you use a wire wheel on things, use a brass one not a steel or stainless steel one, a brass one won't mar the gasket sealing surfaces but will still rip the gasket material off quite nicely.

I've driven a few jeeps and it seems that their brakes aren't a quick to fully stop as other cars. They aren't horrible by any means, I've grown comfortable with my MJ's breaking habit. They bad thing is when I'm driving another vehicle. :rotf: Whenever I go to apply the brake, out of habit I break the same as I do in my jeep...lets just say I've about beat my brain silly by my forehead almost playing my steering wheel like a drumset. :doh: Not only that but people must think I'm crazy cuz I start to apply the break WAY before the stop sign. I love my jeep. :drool: Yeah - the brakes in my 98 are actually pretty awesome. The 96's brakes were good till recently, not sure what happened, I might have to replace some more lines because it feels like they're full of air and that means a leak somewhere. The MJ had good brakes right after I finished replacing everything, but I hadn't learned about the special MJ bleeding procedure yet so I didn't do it, the good brakes lasted till the first time I bounced it around a dirt road and every time I do it, they get worse. So I think I just need to remember to re-bleed them at some point and they'll be back to usual. First few times I stopped in the 98 I nearly did the same thing as you... it'd been sitting for 4 months when I bought it, so the drums and rotors were pretty rusty :rotf: nearly got whiplash, had to ride the brakes for a few minutes to scrape all the rust off.

Crap I shoulda mentioned this earlier... did you put spacers between the header panel and the fenders before painting? Always better if the body panels aren't stuck together with paint, helps speed repairs later. A couple washers on each bolt/stud pretty much does it.

Could be... don't want to though. I like Comanches - though I'd pick up an FSJ or two in a heartbeat if I could find em for decent prices in OK shape (rust wise) around here. Also, that kind of price tag would require loans and loans are something I refuse to deal with when I can avoid it. I've got 3 jeeps, I spent $4200 total buying them (should have been more like $3000, got ripped off on the first one, the 96) and maybe 10k building / restoring all 3 of them to this point. Not a cheap hobby by any means, but it sure does ensure that I will always have something to drive to work in the morning...

So wait, you want to send that British made vehicle to Mars? The martians are gonna be pissed when it causes an oil spill, or oil leak, depending on how bad the seals on that particular one are. As for the whole aerospace socialism debate... NASA's budget is what, 17 billion a year? And we've gotten so much good science and info out of it? Kill Social Security and Medicare before they bankrupt us. Then worry about the small crap like NASA. Bang for buck, go for the big stuff first. You guys looking for an apprentice? No pro experience as an electrician, but I read the 93 NEC cover to cover by the time I was 16, still have a decent amount of the code memorized, know black/red from white, can tell wire gauge by sight, etc. Right now, I'm a post-silicon validation engineer doing Itanium product line systems test/validation for Intel. On the side, I do property maintenance / repair for my landlord, friends, and family, and assorted vehicle repair and construction for my friends and family. I'm also certified to dispose of beer, explosives, and flammable substances via the most suitable applicable methods... :thumbsup: That resume alone makes you more qualified than I am. ;) If you were serious, I'm a Union Electrician so even if this company was hiring (they're not, there's only 5 of us here, and it looks like we're going to stay small), you'd have to be in the program first. Boston has not taken any apprentices in for the last 2 years, but normally there's a general knowledge test, and XX number of applicants with the highest scores are brought into the training program. If you were really interested, since you're in Worcester, (that's a different 'local' from Boston) you'd have to apply there. I REALLY don't want to turn this into a Union vs Non-Union thread but I will say construction Unions are not like most other Union jobs, there's no protection, no seniority, no tenure, no pay while out of work, no scheduled call backs, etc etc etc. I've been laid off 6, or 7 times in the 23 years I've been in, I never knew it was coming till I got my check, and the company is free to keep, or lay off who ever they like. They could hire someone new today, and lay off a 20 year employee tomorrow. I tell that last part to people that think they know everything about Unions, and they either look at me like I'm crazy, or call me a liar. :rotf: Semi serious. I wanted to be an electrician for a couple years when I was a kid, just before I really got into electronics. I'm getting pretty tired of writing software and looking for some sort of a change, haven't fully decided what it's going to be. I'd love to get more into what I spent highschool and college doing for fun - embedded systems design, but haven't gotten hired doing that yet. For some reason writing software (no matter how low level it is - I do assembly language / C development mostly, and spend a lot of time in a hardware debugger) is just not as rewarding as designing and building hardware or working on cars / doing home electrical etc. welcome to the nerdy job club

What color do you want? I have a set of the aluminum-painted ones (matte instead of shiny chrome) somewhere from my '96's old header panel, they're yours for shipping if (a) I can find them and (B) you want them. They need new adhesive, but that's no big deal, a roll of Loctite Power Grab is something you should have around anyways :D

I'm not certain I could finish that... I had 8 or 9 burgers at one point this spring, that's no problem, but that many fries looks like pain. I did about 3/4 of the "gallon challenge" every day with dinner during college, and downed 1/2 gallon in 4.5 minutes at one point just prior to running across campus, so I'm pretty sure I could do the gallon challenge without barfing.

My new axle was kinda like that when I got it, fortunately almost all of the bend was in the upper inner C arms, so a few beers and some time spent with a 4lb hand sledge fixed it. I wasn't gonna run it since it seemed silly to install a pre-bent axle, but I needed something with non rusted coil perches and shock mounts and picked it up cheap (cheap as in the same price as a pair of spare shafts at the junkyard) so I figured I'd just run it till I get my hands on a better one. GREAT score on the front skid, I've got those on my 91 and my 96. When I junk the 96 the one on it is moving to the 98.

heard that part of worcester was without power, substation got hit by lightning, tornado sirens going off etc. Out in Hudson (MA) the sky just got dark and it got very windy and there was some heavy thunder, no actual rain. I was kinda disappointed.
