I used a bumper jack on mine. I hate them things as they're more dangerous than a gun. got the wheel off the ground and used a crow bar. Popped it right out.

1986 2.8 V6: Dana 35C with 4.11 stock?
jimoshel replied to tsa256's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Some people seem to be confused, especially me, by the gear ratios in their rear ends. Also confused by the ratios in their Jeeps rear ends. Checked the Dana site and came up with the following. Dana. 44, 4.09, rounded off 4.10 45/11 Dana 35, 4.10 41/10 Dana 35, 4.11 37/9 Apparently the 44 is only 4.10 The 35 can be either 4.10 or 4.11 Only way to tell for sure is removing cover and counting cogs. For what it's worth -
Can anybody give me a reason as to why I couldn't just take a sawzall and remove the roof, fenders, add a roll cage and make a rock crawler out of it? :dunno:

1986 2.8 V6: Dana 35C with 4.11 stock?

4:11 were available as stock. I believe the 3;53 was standard and 4:11 optional. 2 of my MJ are '86 with 2.8, 5sp and 4:11. -
I know, knew, that. I was just having so much fun dismembering the body I got carried away.

Engine, transmission, transfer case, both axles and a killer stereo. Everything on it works so it's going to be a donor to two XJ'S and one MJ. :wrench: I apologize. I goofed. It's going into two ZJ'S and one MJ. Must of been asleep there. The front axle and tranny and rear hatch struts is going into daughters '94ZJ. The rear axle and radiator is going into GF '95ZJ. The motor, tires and wheels, bucket seats and stereo is going into a stripped '89 MJ I recently acquired. The hood may be going on a '98 XJ. Gotta check for fit. It is going to be pretty much used up. And the body's good for $200 scrap.

The one on the right side of the shed is a Studebaker. The rusty one in front is a metropolitan, The yellow one in front of the Stude looks like a Metro. Can't tell if they're Nashs' or Hudsons as they both had the same body and only a chrome logo to tell them apart.

1996ZJ, excessive speed, Ice patch= In your humble and highly respected opinion, can this be buffed out? Or am I gonna have to spring a couple bucks and get some Bondo?

:wall: And I almost got seriously injured when I was up there loosening your garage roof rafters. Guess I'll try again in a couple years. Gonna have to keep a eye on this guy.

About a week ago the wind was whipping thru here something ferocious when the neighbor called and said the roof of the garage was blowing off. I checked. It was. The SW corner was raising and flopping about 2 feet. Got the ladder leaned up and started carrying cement blocks up and placing them along the edge. Cement blocks, not cinder. After carrying the 12th one up and coming back down the ladder my bum leg, (motorcycle wreck years ago) gave out and I fell to the ground collapsing up against the ladder panting for breath. My GF, a RN, starts hollering "heart attack" I tell her BS. No heart attack. For a week this goes on. Finally to shut her up and get her off my back I agree to go see a doc, cardiologist. That was this morn. Plugged enough wires onto me I looked like a Chevy V8 Distributer cap with the plug wires adangling. Then the damn stethoscopes. Everybody walking into the room had a damn stet around their necks and they all had to listen. Them things are cold. Then the treadmill, legalized torture machine. Not going to mention all the monitors all over the place showing weird pics. Was finally told to get dressed and the doc came in. He said the tests and results were 85-90% accurate and he couldn't find a thing wrong with me and I should be good for many more years. Just don't climb any more ladders carrying cement blocks. Well I was so damn happy at the news that I immediately lit up the cheapest cigar I could find and went to Mickey D where I ordered a double grease burger and a side order of grease fries. So to all you homies who been waiting for me to kick off so you could get my MJ'S, FORGET IT ! It ain't happening YET.

I don't think so. If the frame is strong enough not to fold between the bed and the cab, then it's certainly not going to fold under the cab. I liked it. Looks like they did a good work and not a hatchet job.

Can't beat a shotgun. I have a 1911 .45 I keep handy but for home protection you just can't beat a shotgun. I've seen people high or drunk laugh at a rifle or pistol and dare you to shoot them. A shot gun has a mystique about them that will sober any drunk up and nobody wants to argue with them.

Sam. You do good work. Jim

Pat, Thanks for the input. Car was complete when I got it. Everything you see missing I removed and it's laying on the ground beside it. Frame and axle are straight. I have a hard time parting anything out. Always want to fix 'em. :wrench:

Got 1998 Cherokee Sport the other day. Only reason I got it was to part it out. Maybe donor for a MJ 4WD conversion. After getting it home and cleaned up I decided it was just to nice to part. Any body know off hand what years fender and hood will fit? Is the sport any different from a regular XJ? I compared it with a '94 XJ and there is a slight difference in body lines.

My brother is not mechanically inclined. He wouldn't know a 44 from a muffler.

Brother finally made it out. He went to the wrong yard first. Didn't know there were 2. console was all busted up so i told him to forget it. the seats were in sorry condition but I figure the mounting frame was worth something so he's getting both of them. He's also getting the right tail light and tail gate for me. Should be down this Sat and we'll see what's what.

any aftermarket tailgates for the mj?
jimoshel replied to og3r's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
It's not that hard to make one. The hardest part would be the latches to work with the original catches. -
Lookin' good Sam. I feel I'm fortunate in that i don't have to flip cars for a profit. I do it mostly because I enjoy doing it and to keep busy. However I never turn down a chance to make a buck. Just a sidenote. I live 12 miles out of town. The last 2 miles is unimproved, muffler dragging, spring breaking, jaw rattling cattle trail. There are 2 advantages to this. No gestapo agents showing up telling me I have to do this or that or that I can't do this or that. And when somebody does show up I know they're a serious buyer, not a looky Lou.

I wanted to fabricate a grill guard, winch mount for my Jeep using heavy (6 inch) steel plate. After diligently searching for a welder big enough to do the job and coming up empty handed I decided to take manners into my own hands and build one. First obtained a 50,000 amp generator, navy surplus and a 454 engine to drive it with. Unfortunately the engine couldn't hack it so I got a Santa Fe railroad surplus diesel locomotive GN-9 and modified it. 4 inch welding cables are expensive. I thought about making it a stick welder but decided wire feed was the only way to go so I got 25.000 feet of 1/2 steel cable, wire rope from a abandoned mine near me. Using the 454 to feed the wire, er, cable with. Think I screwed up tho by trying to weld the assembly on the MJ instead of on the ground and then mounting it. Had the ground lead attached to the rear bumper. When I struck a spark the whole d*mn thing disappeared in a cloud of smoke. Maybe I should have drained the gas tank first. Anybody want to buy a surplus railroad locomotive?

I really thought about no 3 a long time, was really hesitant about suggesting grinding a shiny new part and what it would do to the strength of the part etc. but then said to heck with it. They're just suggestions. Many a time I've rejected a suggestion for one reason or another but it would give me an idea for doing it another way. And as for the leaking gasket, in my life I have never had a gasket leak that had a good coat of Indian Head shellac gasket sealer on it. I'm not sure they even make it any more. You could glue a head to the block with that stuff and not even use any head bolts. :D
