Yeah I also read about that, the benz 5 cylinder is a beastly engine, but his truck was a 2wd, and he had to use the factory trans from the benz as he could not mount anything else behind it

Where did ya find this? I wasnt really looking for the Renault diesel, but I'll definately take one for that kinda money... It'd save me cash until I figure out what other engine I wanna swap in

See again the problem with the 4bt is that it is a commercial grade motor, it tips the scales at around 700 pounds, pretty close to having a big block chevy in the MJ... Id need to do some structural reinforcing, and itd be a lot of work to get the darn thing to clear the hood (its a tall motor) another reason I don't want it, is that I'd prefer not to have my teeth shaken out while I'm idling. I have seen a 4bt swapped into an MJ before (youtube) I don't know if he's on the comancheclub forum though

So, I know this topic has been discussed many times, but I'm looking for examples of diesel swaps in MJs. The 4.0 is a good motor, no doubt. But I love the low end grunt and the diesel sound (and the economy and veggy oil possibilities) What I wanna do is to retain the entire MJ driveline, just swap the engine, I don't want to have to swap the transmission, use a divorced T case etc. I'm considering a few options here, the Renault 2.1 is easy bolt in, but unreliable and hard to find. A cummins 4BT is too heavy for my tastes, and a little overkill. The mercedes 5 banger turbo diesel seems like a good option, but parts are scarce and I'd need a way to adapt it to the AX-15. Also considering a VW diesel, the 1.6 is pretty anemic, but cheap and easy. The 1.9TD seems like a decent candidate, with a work it can turn some respectable numbers, and the 1.9 TDI would be great if it werent so dang complicated. The toyota guys do the vw swap a lot, and if I could find a 22RET bellhousing, i can bolt it to my transmission, and use a common adapter plate to mount the motor. Last option is the VM motori diesel from the KJ CRD, but it has the same issues as the VW 1.9 TDI, very complex, and expensive. I'm leaning toward a VW swap of some sort, Have any of you heard about one of these motors swapped into a jeep? I'd like to hear your opinions, I'm already aware that a lot of people aren't going to think this is a great idea.

Hi, I've been on here for a little while, but I haven't taken the time to properly introduce myself. My name is Kelly, I'm a guy (guy Kellys are far and few between) I figured I'd get that out of the way. I'm a car nut, been so for the last 8 or so years, my older brother Alex's first car was a 97 Wrangler, which is what got me into jeeps. My first car was and is a 72 mustang, which I'm currently restoring, my second vehicle was a 92 Dakota 4x4, which thankfully I sold. A little over two months ago, I had just gotten a buyer lined up for the dodge, and had a decision. There was an 89 YJ for sale that needed a motor rebuild, or the 89 Comanche for $1200. Well I obviously took the comanche and havent looked back. Here's my new pickumup Its an 89 Pioneer, SWB, now 4x4 (PO converted it), now AX-15. Its got the 16 inch wheels from either a ZJ or a WJ on it. I got a set of 245 75 16 ATs for free a week ago with good tread, they don't rub... barely. PO Built the tube bumper (gonna be repainted) My temporary solution to keeping the back of the bed from rusting further The old shackles had about rusted through, so I replaced them with these adjustable lift shackles from rough country, a very good product Ew, dana 35! Interior pics The rust :wall: Rockers Rear Fenders (With what appears to be aluminum foil covering the carnage) Drivers Floor :fs1: Anyway this is my new ride, both a DD and a project. Tell me what you think

dang youre right, id gotten confused and was thinking about the dakota 2.5 bellhousing that allows you to bolt the ax15 behind the L4...OK well I'm lookng for 4.0 parts then!
-
So would the parts from say a 3.9 ax-15 dakota work? these are typically easy to find
-
Also, I'm wondering if my truck has the 21 or 23 spline output shaft, the PO says he thinks the jeep it came out of was a 93, the t case i have has no provissions for the vacuum disco

By the black brake fluid, and from the slow fluid leak ive decided my clutch slave cylinder is bad (already replaced master) what all is involved in swapping the external slave over

definately stick

NGK seems to make a good product, i just have issues putting anything japanese in my truck... the ax and gauge cluster have me all nervous already :(

Aftermarket Exhaust Headers for '87-'90 Renix Setups
kro10000 replied to 500 MJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
My experience with HO headers is that they ALWAYS crack, gone through 2 in bros TJ, rewelded 3 times -
From working at a parts store for a while I'm kinda picky about these (for whatever reason) Champion-Jeep or Chrysler AC Delco-GM Autolite-Ford Motorcraft-Ford Bosch-European Imports NGK-Asian Imports E3-Useless Ive always had good experiences with champion plugs in jeeps, I only use platinum plugs in cars that had them originally or that have impossible to reach plugs (Ford F150s, transverse v6s etc. etc.) because you can go further without changing them. Changing plugs on our jeeps is simple so I run standard copper electrode plugs. Its not worth the extra $$$ for platinums with jeeps, and its a good idea to periodically check on your plugs 'cause theyre a good indication for how your motor runs. Anyway it's your preference, NGKs will probably work fine in a jeep, but I stick with champions

So, about changing them bearings....
kro10000 replied to thedave360's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Firstly, unless your crank has been at one point turned, you need factory sized bearings, cam bearings need to be installed at a shop so I wouldnt be messing with these. Just remember to lube up everything with a good engine asssembly lube, and it's definately a good idea to prime the pump before you fire the motor. Good Luck! -
Has anyone thought of doing something like this?
kro10000 replied to dasbulliwagen's topic in The Pub
I think it'd be awesome... I've considered it myself. I think since its a uniframe design, youd have to do a whole lot of structural reinforcing to the lower end of the truck, because some of the structure is supported by the roof. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong -
Fuel Pump Relay... MY TRUCK WON'T START!!
kro10000 replied to neohic's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
:agree: An old tow truck driver trick I've learned is to take a hammer and beat (somewhat gently) on the bottom on the fuel tank... Although I can't seem to remember why it works off hand, IIRC it clears the sump :hmm: ... But I have seen it work with success  -
Naw, trying to find a website is useless. One of my buddies with the lifted XJ has been to that junkyard, I should be able to get instructions from him... If you pay the $2 at one of the junkyards, it'll get you into the other junkyard. So the way I figure it, we could meet up at the junkyard we were at sometime, and you could follow me from there to the other one, wherever that may be
-
The second one, should be bigger than the first
-
Apparently Lenard, theres a sister junkyard to the bigger one we went to Friday. I went looking around for it one day, but after cruising around 12th & Troost long enough in my dads new ram I decided to leave  . From what I've heard its not as big as the one we went to, but we might find another MJ

:fs1: yeah i can't believe someone got that cargo light switch :wall: :wall: :wall: ill try to post pics of that hitch soon though... Its a pretty good design if you don't use the tire carrier
