I had brake pads let go and wedge the wheels to a halt in an XJ. I'd try driving it again to see if it's fine now. The diff may have a chunk stuck in between the ring and pinion that dropped back down when you pushed it backwards. DOH! The trans has shifted into 2 gears at once! Happened to my son with his '87 XJ too The Peugeot didn't come with 23 spline. AX-15 did and it became available part way into '90. I just picked up an AX-15 to put into my '87 Comanche tomorrow (I hope I'm feeling good so I can git'r done!) I have a NP208J to put behind it with a Novak clocking ring. PS: The way to tell a BA 10/5 from the AX-15 is to look at the shifter tower. AX-15 has 4 bolts holding it and BA 10/5 has 3.

It could be the throw out bearing on the clutch or like my '87 BA 10/5 it could be the pilot bearing squealing. (mine makes HORRID noises on start up!) If the trans was run out of oil, it would make nasty noises too (you shoulda heard the AX-5 in my '86 when it went! WOW! And it seized while driving downhill which was even more fun!)

Sarge is coming together slowly

Get it right Mon! AMC central! The J4000 has made many trips with a car on top and another on the dolly (sold the dolly to get another Jeep. Next will be a real trailer or the J4000 cab put onto a 2 ton IH frame I just found for free. :brows: ) -

I am planning to get myself a shop set up out near Reiter with a house above it within the next couple years. Already have the property and just need the permit$ and a loan to get it started. The '73 J4000 is D44 front (5 lug closed knuckle with drum brakes) with a 304 (I put in from a '77 AMX I parted in the pic below) and tired TH400 with Quadratrac (first year of this case. Before I got it, it was converted to part time and the O/D kit added which helps on the highway but sucks offroad as the chain skips too easily) with optional low range. Rear axle was a semi-float D60 (5 lug also) and I swapped it for a D60 full float to handle more weight, then did a rear shackle flip for the height to clear the 33/12.50/16.5 tires. Front axle is awaiting time and a place to install. I've been using the truck to haul stuff (biggest payload so far was 6500 lbs of concrete slabs for my driveway) The J4000 is on the right awaiting the motor from this '77 AMX. (I now have an '82 in much nicer shape awaiting EFI and my Comanche's 2wd 5 speed to make it a super highway cruiser) The motor was still warm when I dropped it into the truck. I changed the freeze plugs, oil pan and flexplate as well as alt and PS brackets to make it fit right in where the gas guzzling 360 once was. In the back ground you can see one of my old AMC Eagles (#5 I think) Another view of the AMX. My '82 Spirit is similar body lines (same hatch, fenders and doors) but slightly updated. It will be even more so if I get time and $$ to do it. -
AX15 to 2.5L, new adapter from AA
carnuck replied to mjeff87's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If you can find a Dakota with the AMC 2.5L and 5 speed, most were AX-15s. It's tough to find them in the boneyard tho as they are the TJ guys "Holy Grail". -
If you've done an SOA like me, I scored extended rear shocks for some kind of Mazda/Ranger lifted rig that were perfect!

Australia also banned the private ownership of any gun and hunt down anyone who keeps them. Not my cup of tea!

got daytime running lights? -
My '87 Comanche's cat got gutted a long time ago. I pass the E-test easily. Fuel economy is 17 in town and pushing 20 on the highway.

Idle problem. (not me- the truck)
carnuck replied to ChiefJosh's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
When I can get over here. Days off are usually busy. Went to the dentist yesterday and the stuff they inject makes me feel like crap for a couple days. -

Make sure the hose that comes off the intake to the vacuum bottle isn't split. If you are having heat/defrost control issues and have a big dent in the passenger's side of your bumper, then the vacuum bottle is likely cracked (That's where they live stock. I replaced mine with a universal ball and put it under the hood) The next thing to do is take a can of good throttle body cleaner (be careful to make sure that if it says "carb cleaner" that it is O2 sensor safe! Too many of my customers have had to replace recently changed O2 sensors because they used the wrong thing. WD40 is even worse because it is pure poison to O2 sensors!) and find the small idle air hole on top of the throttle body. Spray all the way around inside the main body to clean it, then put a "spoonful" into the idle port (IAC) and let it sit for a bit before starting. Last, but definitely not least, is to take apart and spray ALL underhood connections with electrical contact cleaner/anti-corrode. -

I tried stock Liberty 16" wheels on my Comanche and they were so wide they hit the tierod (glad I checked BEFORE putting my new tires on those rims!) -

They can feedback through the other bulbs to give weird lighting issues. (if you turn on the headlights, park lights come on. Then you step on the brake and both lights go out. That's caused by a missing ground)

I built my own blowby fix for my previous '84 J10 (Comanche's big brother) and need to on this MJ (with 240,000 on the clock) I run 15W40 Delo. Gets me @20 mpg highway in warm weather. Right now I get @ 16 mpg average with loads and no loads.

It could be just a variable bad ground. If you have a trailer hitch, the harness can mess with your lights.

Life keeps getting in the way, but my '87 Comanche is long overdue for some more work! I sold my house a year and a half ago (and don't have a garage anymore. Living in an apartment sucks!) We bought a cabin with some of the proceeds and the plan is to build a house with a shop (actually, it will be a garage with living loft! ) but I need to get work done on 2 of my 4 current "toys" (as my wife calls them) The '87 MJ is lifted 4 1/2" in front with an SOA rear with the D30 axle swapped in front and D35 rear with 3.73 gearing. This seems to work well with 4.0L, 5 speed BA 10/5 (about to be swapped for AX-15 so it can be a real 4x4 along with an NP208J from a full size Jeep) It's shortbox and red (that's it in my avatar) on 33/9.50/15 tires with a canopy from an S10 shortbed. My other projects are an '84 J10 (that I could nearly back my Comanche under w/o the canopy pre-lift) with stroker 4.6L, AW4, NV241 Rock Lok (4:1 Rubicon case) and D44/D60 axles with 52" tires. It's running 4.10 gears. (only one in the herd) Next is my '73 J4000 junk hauling rig with 304 (from a '77 AMX) TH400/QT with PT/OD swap, D44 front and D60 rear with 3.73 gears (notice a theme here?) And last is my latest to my collection. An '82 AMC Spirit Hatchback that will become "Eaglized" with 4.0L EFI, auto (not sure if it will be AW4 or 999 or 727 yet) and NP242 or NP229 (already have them) or maybe Dana20 with XJ rear axle (3.73 maybe or 3.08 if going to 727) and Eagle D30 front. I have a carport setup at the cabin, but it takes an hour to get there, so till summer starts, I won't have much time to do anything. In the meantime, I rented a storage locker to put my excess parts into (I also have a cube van full of stuff I plan to take to the swap meet next month if I can)

My '87 Comanche (current one of 5 so far) had the original lights yanked out by the previous owner (I found them under the bench seat) He replaced them with military lights that pop off a stand and have a coil of wire to operate. They have a dial on the back for on/brightness and the front rotates to make red lenses. I'm looking for LED replacements for the 1895 bulbs in it now. (they get hot pretty quick) The PO also put a :USAflag: on the ceiling.

Do you have to change the motor mount brackets? My son wants to swap his '88 to 4.0L.

I haven't read everything yet, but I've done 2 conversions so far. First, both axles need to match (find a 4 cyl MJ for nicer gearing or SOA it or an XJ one like I did for lifting) 3.55 is okay up to 30" tires. I'm running 3.73 with a high mileage Renix and 4.0L BA 10/5 (not sure what ratio I'll run when I convert to auto) The HO runs it's HP at higher RPM than the Renix, so lower gears work better. (I'd try what you have now and see how it feels for your needs and go from there) With what you have, swap the whole wiring harness (I think the tail light harness is a plug in, but I may be wrong. I'll find out soon) Not that hard to swap the wiring, but all the sensors and intake/exhaust need to go with it, or swap some other things to make it fit the current motor. (You need the flexplate for the correct EFI system. Renix and HO are different types and CPS sensors) The front axle is a bolt in, but I would suggest doing your lift at the same time and using the tierods, ect from the later model (4x4 tierods and draglinks are stronger) Do the later rad and get rid of the stupid bottle! Front exhaust pipe needs swapping. On the subject of things falling (just read that) I had a '91 Civic fall on my head (car was on axle stands with blocks under the wheels) when the Duvall, WA quake of Jan '95 hit and knocked it down. Nowadays, I use my engine hoist and blocks when doing axle swaps, etc. I survived with a little brain damage (right eye pushed out of socket, and I lost a pint of blood out of my left ear, which still whistles and rings and inopportune times. Basl skull fracture from the eye socket across the top of my nec to my neck) and I was DAMN lucky to be here now and not a vegetable!
