Getting it inspectable
landlubber replied to landlubber's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
ah sorry, been neglecting the forums for a bit. I went with one I knew would work with out any headaches, got one off of a 87 2wd from wildman. after fiddling with both of them, I seriously doubt it would be plug and play. just see if you can pull one from a JY or something. sorry. -
the 242 has the option for part time 4x4, whereas the 231 does not. I believe they are an direct swap. that is the extent of my knowledge on the subject.

I saw a bunch of wranglers being trailered/flat towed while out earlier. don't know where it was in NH, but I'm down south.

after reading 22 pages. time to gouge my eyes out. the bat bug was cool though.

Think i'll go with the dealer part. won't have any time to go junkyarding until the spring pretty much. farmstore is opening up, harvest season is upon us. -

Getting it inspectable

backup lights was a faulty connection. fixed that, beautiful. the serpentine belt was interesting. loosened up the power steering pump and took it off. the old serpentine belt had sheared a rib (4 ribs in stead of 5) the alternator seems to be the problem here - someone put the wrong pulley on it. it has 4 ribs in stead of 5, so it sheared off a rib from the other belt. going to take a look at the alternator on the other MJ, see if I can use that, if not i'll get a new one. the speedometer was easy. the cable was broken off from the back of the gauge. I guess i need to get a new cable. that should solve that problem. hopefully. lot cheaper doing it yourself. I also mounted my CB the other day, but haven't wired anything up yet, it actually fit into pre-drilled holes though. also found a small army of mice when i took out my dash. and 8 or 9 baby ones too. shop vac cleaned that right up. -
hiya, finally really buckling down on getting the MJ inspected and driveable. problems are small but a pain. -serpentine belt- haven't been able to find a good diagram, not really sure how to change one. (noob sorry still learning) -back-up lights don't come one - checked fuses and such. was going to hook them up to a toggle switch. any other thoughts? -speedometer- didn't work when i bought it, must be a bad cable or something? any ideas of references on any of these things would be mucho appreciated.

ok. will put that on the list. any specific ones to look for: ie. tried and true? thanks for the advice.

does that mean I have to use the 3.07's, or just take out the posi element and put it on the 3.55's? this D30 is a HP axle, unlike the LP i have in the other MJ. 4x4 swap will have to wait for a while - next year or this winter most likely, unless someone wants to help me out. The posi cannot be swapped without re-setting up the gears. And gears are not swappable between LP and HP axles. Have you ever set up gears before? negative. just interested in the rear axles here to clarify. they are both stock.

holy crap! check this out - I have seen it on cardomain before but never made the connection. this IS the truck that I have now. the guy I bought it from said the previous owner took out a 3' lift and stuff. too bad! this would have been SICK, wouldn't have to do anything to it. take a look: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2148210/3 sucks! D44, 3'lift, 97+ front clip, light bar, winch.

you see a lot of inserting cars and other modes of transportation in Mexico. I drove down with my family and another family a few years ago (from new hampshire) quite a trip and experience.

talked for quite a while in the chat to genovast. 89 elim, automan, and jeepcomj and they very much answered all my questions and cleared up the confusion i had about a lot of stuff. very encouraged now. doesn't seem too involved after I got my concerns straightened out. seems straightforward enough. going to replace the rear main seal while I am back there and oil pan gasket. unbolt the tranny from the 87 and 88 and put the one from the 87 in the 88 and get the rear driveshaft chopped or w/e and shouldn't be too much more than that. far easier said that done, but I think I'm going to take a crack at it next time i have a week off from school or something. too bad most of you guys are too far off to give a hand. guess I'll see if I can change the serpentine belt friday or something. should be all set after all this. will post any questions. will most likely have questions. will take lots of pictures. ps. do I have to change the registration from 2wd to 4x4?

will a early 90s front axle work on my 87?
landlubber replied to woody62's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
there are ID numbers on the pinion gear. should be two numbers set apart from the others. IE: 41 and 11 or 39 and 11. -

very nice, shame for the XJ. nice challenger too. -
brought 'er up to the barn after work today and set it up on jackstands to see if the front tires were spinning at all. they aren't. vacuum lines were attached but I didnt check them to see if they were cut or whatnot, everything seemed to be in order. took this opportunity to bolt down the shocks so I'm not bouncing around everywhere. tightened up some loose stuff. didn't check out too much else. def a posi rear end. does that mean I have to use the 3.07's, or just take out the posi element and put it on the 3.55's? this D30 is a HP axle, unlike the LP i have in the other MJ. 4x4 swap will have to wait for a while - next year or this winter most likely, unless someone wants to help me out.

well, after diddling with the other MJ I got for quite a while, primary focus is back on this one. I got a heap of parts with the other MJ I purchased and 'nuff to finish I guess. Really would like to get 'er on the road before school starts and the apple season starts. I have near no time in the fall for anything besides school and work. :D anyways, got the front clip and such all squared away as of this evening. but the problem that keeps coming back is the freaking speedometer cable. I have "fixed" it about 5 times. same story every time, works for a bout 200 feet and then stops again. pissing me off. Is there any special procedure involved in fastening the cable to the tranny? please share if you have any ideas. after that just need to replace the serpentine belt and we'll be in business.
