A 2.5L Turbo XJ using the SVO/T-Bird sized turbo & Ford controls/processer could be a fun build, but I'd be about 10 years late to the party for finding cheap junkyard Turbo Ford parts & parts cars. I've been told the Turbo Volvo engines are very similar, but I'd imagine the old Ford stuff is much less complicated.

Good find! -
Buy it! You can always justify it later :) Dune buggy sounds great, or slap a plastic barbie Jeep body on it and have a blast. :D

^^^I hate when I get this excited 1/2 way through a project. :P Nice job. :)

What Have You Towed With Your Comanche?
jpnjim replied to Goose's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I've made 8 or 10 50 mile trips pulling a landscape trailer full of parts, axles, engines, transmissions, etc. Lightest load was probably around 2500, heaviest around the trailer's max of 4k. ^^not so great without trailer brakes. With a 5k lb U-haul receiver hitch. -
... one night. He shined his flashlight around, looking for valuables when a voice in the dark said, 'Jesus knows you're here.' He nearly jumped out of his skin, clicked his flashlight off, and froze. When he heard nothing more, he shook his head and continued. Just as he pulled the stereo out so he could disconnect the wires, clear as a bell he heard 'Jesus is watching you.' Startled, he shined his light around frantically, looking for the source of the voice. Finally, in the corner of the room, his flashlight beam came to rest on a parrot. 'Did you say that?' he hissed at the parrot. 'Yes', the parrot confessed, then squawked, 'I'm just trying to warn you that he's watching you.' The burglar relaxed. 'Warn me, huh? Who in the world are you?' 'Moses,' replied the bird. 'Moses?' the burglar laughed. 'What kind of people would name a bird Moses?' 'The kind of people who would name a Rottweiler Jesus.' __________________

Swap: H0 4Wd Into Renix 2Wd
jpnjim replied to comenschen's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The quick release ends attach to a flat section on the hard line. I was able to copy this well enough with a brake line flare tool. IIRC, doing the first step of a double flare, without folding the 2nd half of the double flare in on itself worked really well, so far the joint has has held up much better than my memory of exactly how I accomplished it ;) -

Swap: H0 4Wd Into Renix 2Wd

Fuel lines, If you go with the HO intake, I shortened & adapted the renix lines to fit the 91-95 HO quick disconnect rail fittings with a flaring tool. Not the correct way, but it worked for me. I also used the HO distributor as cruiser mentioned above. HO throttle body also needs to use the HO throttle cable AND HO gas pedal assembly. (Renix gas pedal won't give you wide open throttle) Also, Besides the fuel rail differences, 1996 engines are different from 87-95's because they use that main cap girdle under the pan, and have a smaller cam to get back some of the low end torque they lost in 91 with the swap to HO intake & head. Neither should really effect what you are doing, but I thought it was worth mentioning. -

Use the later crossmember, and you won't have to weld a bung in the header if you use an HO header to cat pipe (I don't think the renix pipe will work with the HO header anyway) Check the input spine count on the 91 242. 1991 was the year Jeep changed the AW4 from 21 to 23 spline. Some have said early 91's didn't get the upgrade. That's all I can think of right now, good luck! -

'Rare' doesn't always mean there'll be people lined up to buy it when you are selling. -
Awesome! When do you start building the trailer for it?

^^^wow, the 22233x is pretty cheap there http://www.drivetrainamerica.com/p-6467-22233x-dana-44-powr-lok-clutch-kit.aspx $56 vs $90 elsewhere. That pack should fit the earlier 2-piece case Power-Lok instead of the 1 piece Trac-Lok you have. (Sorry, I guess that info is a little late, I didn't look up the #'s till now) Good luck with the build! and thanks for the tip on where to find those packs cheap

I received my Cordovan headliner yesterday. Packaging was excellent, headliner looks perfect, though I don't have my MJ here to match the color up. Thanks Steve for the speedy delivery, and nice job building & packaging it!

^^I just did the math on the two sets of numbers. First set totals 190,446 MJ's Second set totals 169,699 For a difference of 20,747. One guess would be that these were vehicles built for export, in house use, promotional, prototypes, vehicles damaged in production, delivery, etc etc. Year of production data is usually what was released to stockholders, so that info is usually the highest possible number
-
^^Thanks Steve. I've seen these numbers before as well, the trouble is, I believe they are year of manufacture numbers, since there are no model year 1985 MJ's. So the 952 1992's would probably not include the 92' Model year MJ's built in 1991. The other problem with year of manufacture data is it's usually includes vehicles built for export. The "Standard Catalog of Light Duty Trucks" claims; Model year production Comanche; 1986 45,219 1987 28,417 1988 46,389 1989 28,891 1990 10,804 (38.7% of those = 4x4) <--- 89.6% of 136,070 1990 XJs were 4x4's 1991 7,009 (36.7% 4x4) 1992 2,970 (41.9% 4x4) Krause Publications is usually pretty accurate in compiling their data, so I think its a fair bet that the numbers from their "Standard Catalog" are probably pretty close.

Before any Rover and GAZ fans get pissed at me lol, here's how the Rover car company started making 4x4's after WWII on Jeep chassis' http://www.lrfaq.org/NL.MM_firstlandrovers.html They even made sure to destroy the 'prototype' (LR body on a Jeep frame). The GAZ 4x4 story is similar to Toyotas, GAZ got their start making Ford Model A copies for the Russian market, then when Jeeps showed up, they used their tooling to make their own version, the GAZ-67. Complete with a Ford Model A 4 cylinder engine. http://ucapusa.com/heritage_gaz.htm
-
I don't know, but Toyota copied the Jeeps in Japan when they designed their TLC's, even to the point of calling them Jeeps in their first ads here in America. Willys stopped that pretty quick lol. Even Toyota's first 3 engines, Type A, B & C were all direct knock offs of the Chevy Stovebolt Six. You could even interchange parts. I believe they got permission from Chevy for the B engine, and the C was just a stovebolt 6 minus 2 cylinders. I'm not trying to put down the high quality stuff made by Toyota, but Toyota, Land Rover, the Russian GAZ, and others got their starts building vehicles based on the Jeeps America shipped all across the planet.

1500 Mile Trip (Topeka To Boston)
jpnjim replied to random255's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Hornbrod is right. HOs shouldn't take that long to crank. Common reason for long starts in an HO is fuel pressure bleeding off. Try turning the key forward into the run position for 3-5 seconds to let the fuel pressure pump up, before cranking the starter. If it starts right up like that, its *probably* not maintaining fuel pressure after you shut it off. You can also get a little fuel pressure gauge that screws onto the schrader valve on the fuel rail. I forget what the spec is, but the rail is supposed to maintain a certain psi after shutdown. -

Why Boston if you don't have a job set up yet? Do you have a place to rent set up? If you do, post or PM where your apartment is, I'll let you know how good/bad the area is (some areas are pretty bad). Welcome to Comanche Club & Good luck :) Jimmy -
You're getting soft in your old age, The Jim I know wouldn't have needed a doctor for a surgery like that. Extra large bolt from Home depot, 3 lb sledge & a fifth of Jack. Done. (I hope your feeling better Jim)

Beautiful truck (atleast what we can see :) ) and I know what you mean. The best part of the old Army truck I just picked up is the ancient flat head six. I would have never guessed how much I'd love a 600lb 80hp engine, but it makes the truck.
