Yeah, that's what I was afraid you'd say. I was hoping you found some magic tool to make life easy. Would it be best to use a fine grit or coarse grit? I used a coarse grit but not sure if that's the most effective way.

I got mine working this afternoon. I just need to do the LED upgrade. I couldn't believe how much sanding on the contacts and that pesky wheel was required. I kept testing them for continuity before bothering to hook them back up. If your contact is flaky, very gently try to bend the tabs up a bit. Flip the switch in one direction, and bent up the "open" tab. Then flip it the other direction to bend the other one. I used a toothpick to do it. The toothpick seemed to give before I bent the metal too much. What did you sand with? I have been using a piece of sandpaper because I don't have anything else that fits into that small of a space.

Another gauge cluster question

You can swap the whole speedo assy over. -
Can you report back on that AZ cable and how it works out?
-
I'm sure you could get it at a dealer. Or a junkyard, of course.
-
You'll have to replace the whole speedo line from the back of the speedo to underneath the truck. I've broken the one in mine and two at a junkyad, lol.

So I went out and checked the door pins. Neither one seems stuck; they both push in and out easily with no problems. Do they still need to be lubed up if they aren't jammed closed?
-
You are correct sir! And I just now thought of it, Check your headlight switch, where the dimmer turns all the way to the left, it should give them power too, make sure it isnt on all the time right now. Good call. I'll check both of those things and report back. I'm excited to sometimes get light from the fixtures, though. Need to clean the contacts better; they're not continuous light.
-
Oh, duh. I knew about the sticky switches. I don't know why I didn't think of that before. I assume that's the ground for the kick-panel lights, too, right?
-
That means they are working correctly. With the doors closed and the bezel rotated to "doors only" shouldn't the lights be off? Mine were on.
-
Alright, so I took some sandpaper to the contacts and cleaned them up as much as I could. After I hooked them up, they would kind of work. I noticed that with the door closed, I could rotate the bezel up or down and the lights would come on. One direction is for 'doors only' and the other direction is for 'always on'. Is that right? If so, it sounds like I might have a bad ground or something. Where do the pillar lights ground at?

Weird symptoms ... related?

Here's a long term update: After testing the vacuum system, I found it was holding vacuum and there wasn't a leak. Turns out the ground for the TPS (Trans. side) was FUBAR. Ran a new wire straight to batt - and it's idling pretty good. Not 100% perfect, but more like 85-90%. -
Nice. I'll take a look at mine and see if I can get them cleaned and lubed.
-
Boo!
-
No worries, thanks for the guidance.
-
Is the interia lock in the assy something that can be cleaned/lubed, or will I have to replace with new?
-
After a close call with another vehicle, I started thinking about my seatbelt. Had I t-boned that person, my face would have ended up on the steering wheel. When did Jeep start with locking seat belts? neither one in my '88 lock.
-
Yeah, it's pretty crazy that they look just fine but don't work worth a damn.
-
Excellent, I'll have a looksie around for them. Do you have more pics of your truck? Mine is blue - similar to yours, and I'm in the process of getting all the chrome accents, too.
-
Thanks, I sure hope I can get them to work. Are there LED components that would just pop in and be ready to use?
-
Cool, I'll give that a shot. I'll clean up where the contacts ... well, contact ... each other and see if that doesn't help some. You guys are the best.
-
Yeah, I tried that too, after reading the owner's manual I found in the junkyard. Up and Down did nothing. :(
-
Well, I'll pull them and give it a shot. I'm weird about wanting things to be original, so I hope I can get them working.
