LWB Wildernest in Boulder $600
Automan2164 replied to shelbyluvv's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
As mad as I want to be about you getting it, your truck looks sweet. I can't be mad at you. Rob -
As of last week, he asked for my addy again, so I am going to assume that something is on it's way. I also inquired about it's creators or team, and he said he initially asked when it came into the collection, and no one knew. He did say he would ask around again though. Rob

XJ/MJ Diesel gauge cluster, KC

Now that I have calmed down a bit... 87-, if you could pick it up, I would happily pay you for the cluster, your time, and the shipping... And maybe beat up it's owner to find the rest of it. Rob  -

I WANT IT!!!! Rob -
It's always this. The lights always end up with poor contacts. Try pulling the lights, taking a bit of emery cloth to the contacts, and putting them back in. I would bet money on it. Rob

Anyone else get as pumped about it as me? Once in a lifetime opportunity. I started my making a projection viewer, which started with a 12 pack box, but it wasn't far enough away to enlarge the spot, so I added a chip box to no avail, then I broke out the heavy artillery and used a packing tube. I wanted as large as a spot as possible. I read that it was the size equivalent of putting a 1/4" dot on a paper plate and walking 45 feet away. The rig: Honing it in on a friends truck: Best I could do: Dot shadow around 4-5 o'clock Dot shadow near the edge around 4-5 o'clock It was really easy to see with my naked eye in the box, but getting it to translate onto my camera phone was another story. I would imagine you could make a frame set to put in, and then toss some screen in it. I have seen things like this at most swap meets though: http://www.freshairscreens.com/ Guess Lowe's sells something like it too: http://www.lowes.com/pd_228886-51874-12 ... Id=1063341 I've also seen ones that ride up on a separate track like a garage door... Rob

Diesel Fuel Only - Factory Diesel Comanche
Automan2164 replied to Automan2164's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Made it there and back without a hitch. Fawk yeah. Wade and I were literally the some of first vehicles you saw when you entered the show. When we got there, the guy just said park with the AMC's, so I cut it and parked next to the Javelin. If it weren't for the Wronglers, we'd have had the spot to ourselves. It had some interest, but it wasn't crazy. What I did find out was that the people who were interested, were talkers. They would comment on how different it was, and then it would turn into long conversations. I had 3-4 people pretty interested in it. Most just walked by. Wade's got some looks, especially from the Wrangler guy next to him. The Diesel took the trip in stride, with the only downside still being the lack of power. Hills would knock me off the speed train, and it took time to get it up to speed. Once I got up there, it was alright. Oil pressure was good, turbo boost was about 3-5 psi pretty consistently, and the temp was great. Overall, since last Tuesday, I've put about 130 miles on it. I can't wait to top off the tank and see what I am pulling for mileage. I'll post a thread in the pub with some more pics and details of the show later. Rob -
Any ideas for bringing back old paint?
Automan2164 replied to Automan2164's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Tried the clay bar. Now the paint is super smooth, and looks like crap. I kind of expected that, but wanted to try none the less. I never realized how expensive the clay bars are! Any more suggestions? Rob :dunno: -
That is the most important part, nobody hurt, just twisted metal. The MJ was hurt! That's not just twisted metal! Rob :fs2:

I have a show on Sunday that I plan on bringing the diesel to. Only bad thing is that the paint is in less than stellar condition. I would like to shine 'er up and having it looking at least presentable for the show. I have a problem though. The paint is of less-than-stellar condition. At some point, someone left it sit for a long time without washing it. The paint seems very porous, and like there is dirt in the pores. Here are some pics of what I am talking about: You can see where there was a 4x4 decal protecting it during whatever it experienced... and the condition of the rest of it. I picked up some rubbing compound, and tried it in a spot, but all it seemed to do was shine up the surface instead of taking anything out. It almost looks like what oil does in your pores. Started as little scratches, and then they wicked up whatever fell on them. I would like to be able to hit the outside of the truck with something before Sunday, do you guys have any suggestions? Rob

Diesel Fuel Only - Factory Diesel Comanche
Automan2164 replied to Automan2164's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
After some poking from our own Wade, I will be making the trek this weekend to the show. I was thinking of not taking the diesel after finding out that I'm going to need a pump, but Wade was beating me into submission. The thing that really swayed me was when he said that "I think the diesel would be a unique item at an already unique show". -He's right. This is our show. It's an AMC/Jeep/Renault/Rambler/Nash show at a place where that kind of stuff is held high. If there is a place to put it in a show, it's this one. I am going to forgo some of the things I would have liked to get done, like the headliner, and the visors, and just spit shine the outside. Today I sat down with a load of adhesive remover and an old credit card to get all that old, grody, $#!& off of where the side moldings were... It was fine where the factory stuff had still held, but on the few pieces that came loose, some ignoramus decided to spray glue and tape them on. Took me about 3 hours of scraping, spraying, soaking, and more scraping to get most of it off. I took a picture of the good side. Haha. I washed it twice, as well as hit the top of the fenders and header with engine degreaser. They were black from all my dicking around putting everything right. I have a paint issue, which I am going to drag over to tech. You can find it there if you want to follow along. Rob -
Highwheel. Neat. I've always had a desire to learn the unicycle. Rob

They make spot weld drill bits that work fantastic. I would highly recommend one. The pin keeps it centered, and it cuts around the spot weld rather than through it. Rob

If this is who I think it is, I've been bothering this guy about this for awhile now. Just can't get out to get it. Anyone want to do a "MJ's across America" run from CO-IL for me? Like a chain of topper movers. Anyone? Rob -
What corner they put you at? Sinner. :D Machinist eh? From what I understand, that is one of the careers that is really hurting for bodies right now. Not many younger people persue it thinking that it's just another blue collar job. Seems like just yesterday I left school and started out... Now time flies. Congrats Rob

Diesel Fuel Only - Factory Diesel Comanche
Automan2164 replied to Automan2164's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Well fellas, not all that great of news. I dropped it off this morning, hoping for things to come down to some general tinkering. Not so. He started by checking all the normal stuff to make sure the foundation was there, and that I didn't miss anything. He checked the timing, and found it to be a little retarded. He put it straight up and took it out, thought it was still weak, then tried it a little advanced. That really wasn't all that better, so he put it back to stock. Next he checked the fuel pressure, he said that was all good. He then checked the banjo bolts for the wrong orifice sizes or misplacement of orifices, found nothing. Next were the settings themselves. Like I had mentioned, I didn't want to move the idle screw, as I didn't think it was right that I had to turn it up so much. He thought the same thing. He said it didn't seem like it had full fueling, and that at wide open, it felt as if the pump was only going halfway on fuel. One thing he did that I didn't have the balls to do was adjust the WOT stop. He moved it back a bit, and said that it reacted like it would with better function. But, at the same time, the same as the idle set, we shouldn't have to be so far off like that. We would basically be compensating for a failure, only masking the problem. I guess the easiest way to explain what we are thinking is this: Picture a clock. Say idle is at 12. Wide Open Throttle is at 6. What it seems like happened, is something in the pump came loose or is stuck... So now, it doesn't have the fuel from 12-3 o'clock, and 3 is where it starts to idle ok. The 6 position is still where the stop screw is still catching it, but basically we are starting later, which means that by the time we hit the 6 o'clock, we only have half of the throttle sweep completed. Rather than just shift the start to 3, and the end to 9, masking the problem, we need to get the pump rebuilt to figure out the root cause, and get us to where we need to be. So, that's where I am with that. It needs the injection pump looked at in detail. This is out of my realm, as well as the diesel guy's realm, so he's going to send it out. He estimates that he could have it done in about a week, and that the rebuild might run about $500-600. He said that the bigger inline pumps normally run about $1000, but this being a smaller rotary style, he hopes it will be cheaper. Not to say some of the weirdness on it might not tack on some cost. He recommended sending the injectors along with the pump for testing, probably $100 for the four of them. All that being said, this is how I look at it. It needs to be done. Might as well do it now rather than wait, and lose a summer of driving it. It will be rebuilt and warrantied, one less thing to be concerned with. The pump and all it's goofiness will be calibrated and good. He's going to take it out and put it in/time it, so the belt tension, timing, and all the other stuff should be set and perfect. I already have the miles on it to need a belt tension check, so this will be perfect to have someone more experienced set everything for the long haul. I already had him pencil me in for next week, plan to drop it off Thursday night. Rob -

Thanks, but doing that is not original, nor easily removable to put back to original. Dropped it off this morning! Rob -
Diesel Fuel Only - Factory Diesel Comanche

More done today... The clock is ticking over my head to have it ready to go for the long drive before Sunday... Out and about last night picking up stuff for a party: Today I set out to get some fluids changed. Trans and Transfer. You will have to excuse my use of crap fluids, but just like the engine, I want to do a short term change/run, and then settle into a more quality, permanent fluid. I'll most likely run these a few more weeks, and pick up the AMSOIL stuff needed from Will. First step, trans: Then transfer, but no drain pics. I also wanted to check the charge air system, so I pulled all the hoses and pulled the intercooler. I checked it for leaks, couldn't seem to find anything. All checked out. Before I put it in, I gave it a soak in some engine degreaser, and hosed it all down. First, it was sitting in the sun to dry out... That didn't go fast enough though, so I got creative in this heat. Hot air and a fan? Score! I also got to playing with the headliner. This seems weird to me, but it has been awhile since I've played with one... You guys think this has been recovered, or do you think it could be an extra layer of diesel sound deadening from the factory? I also reluctantly pulled off the rest of the side moldings. They weren't really on there all that well, and would have needed to be taken off and re glued anyway. Off they went. I just don't like the look of the truck without them. Those side moldings really break up all the white of the truck. I did take it on a short test drive, and it does seem to shift/run a bit smoother with the new oil in the trans. I can't wait to get the trackbar bushing changed out (HOLY DEATH WOBBLE), and let it stretch it's legs. It still has no power, but hopefully (I say this a lot) things will be better after a visit to the diesel doc on Wednesday. On a good note, the power windows and locks seem to be coming around. Every time I get in for a ride, they move quicker and quicker. When I first started using them, I had to help them up and down. Now they are almost like real power windows. The locks are more of a gimmick. But, nice to have. Rob -
So, for the email back, we have: Interior Odometer VIN Drivers door sticker Broader shots of the front suspension Exhaust rear axle back Engine Compartment Under the tonneau cover Racerback / How the lights are mounted Any details possible of the headlights under the cover Ground-level [worm's eye] shot of the right front quarter with wheels turned to the left with nothing but blue sky in the background Do you guys have any questions? Understand that he may not be able to answer all of them, but it doesn't hurt to ask. I would like to have some sort of a formal email out to Brandt by tomorrow at the latest. Rob
