It's heavier and it doesn't have detergents. What else am I missing? I would love to hear the chemical differences between the two fluids. Understand that I'm not going to throw motor oil in every manual transmission & differential, but there are applications where it's perfectly acceptable. Chryco handed down a TSB stating such. You don't believe them and think they just don't care about our cars anymore. Knowing where TSBs come from and the process you must go through to generate one I can tell you that is not the case. Chryco is not the OEM of the AX-15...that would be Aisin-Warner and I'll wager a hefty amount that says they were included in the conversation of using motor oil in their transmissions due to the lack of availability of their original recommended fluid in North America. Now, with all that said - do I use motor oil in my transmission? Nope. I've had great success with a mixture of Redline MTL/MT90 in other, older transmissions so that's what I stuck with in my '92MJ.

You're not alone. Even though Hurricane Sandy left me with nothing more than a light flicker once or twice, I'm gearing up for the next. I saw first-hand what that storm did to family and friend's homes back in NJ. Completely destroyed my sister-in-law's grandmother's house, see below: Our local Acme just had a going out of business sale and they had canned good for anywhere from 50-75% off. I bought about 100 bucks worth and stocked my pantry full. My father gave me an old army surplus generator that I wanted to wire into the house. I decided to sell it to a guy in the neighborhood instead and am going to use the funds to purchase a propane-powered generator. I have two 250 gallon propane tanks and my only propane appliance is my stove and hot water boiler, which only gets used 3.5 months out of the year.

Meh, it's not like manual trans fluid has some special formula that allows it to handle shear stresses better. It's just a heavier version of motor oil without as many detergents.

I just spoke with Steve. He's a little behind on orders and he won't be able to start making any new orders until after Thanksgiving, but his price is $135 shipped for brand new backing board/material. If you're like me, you have multiple Comanche's with no headliners...he said he would do $225 shipped for two.

I'm pretty sure Chryco issued a technical bulletin that says the listing of GL-5 fluid for certain transmissions was an error.

So glad a member got a hold of this gem. Way to go! I'm eagerly awaiting thousands of pictures of every nook and cranny on this thing.

My '88 SporTruck came with the same steering wheel. I think it was standard for base model Comanche's from 86-90.

Nice looking truck. I traded a '91YJ for my '92MJ straight up. Great trade, in my opinion - the YJ just wasn't a practical vehicle for me at all.

I don't really know if I'd call my comments close-minded. I've personally witnessed several of my friends just go completely down the crapper because of their habitual marijuana smoking. The one in particular that comes to mind was a fairly decent athlete in high school and is a pretty bright kid. He used his diabetes as an excuse to smoke a lot of pot saying it helped him cope. Ten years later and the kid is now overweight, has trouble breathing and has a data entry job in some cubicle maze in Trenton, NJ. His life has definitely changed for the worse because of the drug. I'm not for or against the legalization of the stuff. Just like ghey marriage, I have no opinion because both issues have no direct effect on how I live my life. The only comment I have on the legalization of pot is I hope they tax the hell out of it, just like alcohol. It'd be nice to actually get something out of it that can benefit everyone - including the people that don't use the stuff.

1988 5.9L Magnum V8 Comanche

Mine is beginning to understand the difference between a garage and "my shop." Most of the crap that is in my shop right now is a result of her cleaning up for hurricane Sandy while I was up in NJ visiting my family for my bday. She basically just drug everything in through the door and piled it up - not that I mind because it was going to go in there, anyway. I suspect less and less will be moved into my shop when I fix both garage doors and can actually move large objects (i.e. my project MJs) inside - right now it looks like there is lots of room because I only have a standard 3' door for access and MJs don't fit through that... -

Forgot to mention - my plan is to grab this rig over Thanksgiving or Christmas. I'm taking extra days off of work to visit my family, but if I can find a tow dolly then I'll haul this thing back with me and dive back into it. -

Yikes. Nearly a year and no update on this project. Bought a house back in April and have been busy with projects around that house that need to get done before I can move to the garage. Finally had a chance to mess with my garage this past weekend and was able to go from (sorry about the crappy pic, only one I had was from my home appraisal in April): To: First time having a fully-operational garage door that doesn't require me to risk my life trying to open and close it! I need to cut out some old lumber on the left garage door framework and replace with new before I can get that one up. Also need to get my shelving up, workbenches made and stuff put away. My shop currently looks like a storage container, somewhat due in part to the fact my woman grew up thinking that a garage is a place for storage - not a place where men work. I should start leaving car parts in her closet... -
My experience was about the same, but I didn't follow the directions and went for the "slap it on" approach that you did towards the end. I felt that the appearance was much better when you laid it on heavy so I just stuck with that method. I tried to smooth out the runs as best I could, but like you said, you get buildup around brackets, corners, etc. I also see that you went with the sponge brush as opposed to a traditional bristle. I tried both methods and the sponge produced more runs than the bristle mainly because when I would go back over an area to smooth it out, the sponge still had paint hidden that would come pouring out, thus taking me right back to where I started. It was a lot easier to smooth out the runs with a bristle brush, but then I had to stop and pick out the bristles every time they fell out. Like you, I eventually gave up on the "want it to look perfect" and just coated the truck. If you're not experienced with spray-guns in terms of thinning out paints and setting the gun up for a correct spray pattern, POR-15 isn't the paint to start on. This stuff is VERY thick and it tends to want to "spit" rather than spray no matter what I did when I tried to spray it. Like Rob said, it's EXPENSIVE and you do not want this stuff oversprayed in your garage.

I also endorse this stuff: http://comancheclub.com/topic/14183-1988-59l-magnum-v8-comanche/page__st__60#entry302782

Yes and a very wise decision on her part considering football isn't going to take her anywhere once she gets past age 12-13.

I Need More Wiggle Room... And An Updated Home
terrawombat replied to neohic's topic in Member Projects: Other Cool Stuff
Looking great! As I was working in my shop last night and side stepping between the MJ and all the crap leaning up against the wall I started thinking of ways to expand to get some more wiggle room. Unfortunately, I can't expand outward like you did without knocking down a carport and another shed. Can only lengthen or go up. I miss my old dairy barn with virtually unlimited floor space... -
Well, at the very least, she'll have a stellar career in the lingerie football league.

Urine? Or does it take too long to get into the urinary tract? I've tinkered with the substance, but my body has a low tolerance for it. I generally wind up getting dizzy and needing to lie down for a prolonged period of time - I don't see the fun in that. Of the habitual users I know, I would say that 75% of them are no longer capable of functioning at a normal, productive level as their non-using selves. When they used to be productive and on top of their work, they have slowly become a lot lazier, unreliable and do not pay enough attention to detail. Everything seems to become, "Yea, whatever" to them. I'm all about letting loose and having fun, but not when it affects my professional career.

Not sure if this will be your first time working with POR-15, but you'll basically want to wear a full body suit when using that stuff...or at least clothes you really don't care about. Of the half dozen times or so I've used POR-15, it always happens to fall on a day or two before I have to do something important. I had black paint all over my hands for an international symposium that I was giving a presentation at, which had lots of reps from the big US automakers - just had to keep my hands hidden behind the podium. Another time was right before a job interview. Come to think of it, I was offered a job both times my hands had streaks of POR-15 caked on them...maybe it's a good thing? That stuff will stay on your hands for up to a week and even longer if you get it stuck in your arm hairs. The best method of removing it is sitting in the shower until your hands get pruned and then plucking the pieces off one by one.

The Dailyest of Drivers 1992 MJ
terrawombat replied to terrawombat's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
The top candidates for diesels engines are as follows: Isuzu 4JB1T - 2.8L I4 turbocharged/intercooled diesel. 105HP/175 ft-lbs torque. Direct injection engine that sips on fuel, but is known to be louder than other Isuzu diesels in its engine family. From what I can gather from other swaps is that this engine in an MJ/XJ can get up to 35MPG on the highway. Downsides are that it's an older engine and most of the ones that are imported into this country are from the late 1980's. Parts are getting harder to find for these engines, although they tend not to need much. So far the best price I have found is $2,400 plus shipping for this engine coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission (the manufacturer of the transmission is Aisin-Warner - same as the Jeep AX-5, AX-15 and AW4). Isuzu 4JG2 - 3.1L I4 turbocharged/intercooled diesel. 125HP/200 ft-lbs torque. Indirect injection engine that is a little more of a fuel hog, but is known to be much quieter and smoother than the aforementioned Isuzu diesel. Supposedly does very well on long road trips, but isn't great when you're in stop and go. From the other swaps I have seen and mileage numbers reported, I believe this engine will only produce 30MPH highway in a shortbed MJ. This engine was the successor to the previously mentioned 4JB1T. It's more readily available and parts seem to be pretty cheap and accessible. I have seen prices anywhere from $1800 plus shipping to $2200 shipped for a complete setup with auto or manual transmission. One thing I noticed is that the automatic transmissions on these engines are Aisin-Warner AW4's - just like our beloved Jeep. So, at the very least, a portion of the swap has been done for me if I chose to stick with an automatic. Both of these Isuzu engines are known to be extremely reliable and tough as nails. I have seen many reports of these things going 350,000+ miles with no issues. I'm going to continue to do some research on other engines, but so far, these two are leading the pack. -
Cool. Gonna add those to the x-mas wishlist!

I wish I could be hired for a job for 4 years, fail to live up to expectations, fail to complete my assigned tasks and then re-up my contract for another 4 years.
