Just Got My First Mj
lil_loco replied to ryanatrocks@yahoo.com's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Funny there is an ad on kijiji that looks almost identical to this MJ...... http://barrie.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-cars-trucks-92-jeep-comanche-W0QQAdIdZ585933221 -
Good Grounding Point In The Back Of The Cab?
lil_loco replied to Zebvance's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
When taking out the interior on my donor truck I found the previous owner took advantage of the road side tool kit tie downs on the back wall. Ran the wires tidy behind the half wall carpet board. Seems like a good spot protected and easy to scratch the paint away without risking much rust formation. -
Bucket Seats And Center Counsole
lil_loco replied to Jack87's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
To bad you aren't close to me I'm stripping out a near mint set of buckets from my 86 to go to a bench -
Now a couple folks @yxmj and @cruiser54 have asked on here "what's with the tail gate paint job? " Answer: I have no clue. Records indicate this was a work truck likely owned by St.Mary's cement who used that color scheme but I'm just speculating. It would be cool to find out the truth though.

Meanwhile..... I picked up another 86 MJ but an X trim to donate some parts.... i4 ax5 np207 4.10 30/35.... bought from the original owner who was a non smoker to boot! It didn't take a day after I got the donor home before I started to strip the interior! Next to strip is the factory roll bar and fog lights. My ultimate goal is to replicate the original advert photo with some substance and updates. I've also been sourcing parts for adding a.c. but that's another adventure....full of snakes and treasure hunting.... like a bad Indiana Jones story without Indy.

Most recently she decided to blow up her rear end. A perfectly sound D44 magically drained of oil? Who knows.... But I got it all cleaned up (with the help of a battery powered impact gun). And rolled her to the back yard to wait for the transplant - traclok with 60,000km highway.

1986 XLS i4 ax4 np207. This truck and I started our adventure together in the fall of 2008 though kijiji at a whopping $1150 (blew my college grant). I bought her pretty much blind too. Had her delivered half way across Ontario then drive her home not knowing if she was even going to make it! Got the safety passed then learned standard very fast. Taking her for safety got me a part time job offer at the Crappytire nearby to me as a service adviser for a while until I started a real job. Then it all went crazy from there. Almost like the Stephen king novel. Can't get rid of her and she keeps doing bad things..... 2009 parked after some guy posing as an Canadian Rustys dealer tricked me into letting him work on it for pay. 2010 again you think I would have learned from before. Afer repo from folks that unfortunately own a popular jeep forum here in Canada who while I thought were working on it under assumption they were an off-road shop used it as a trash bin. 2011 third time a charm? Health caused yet another halt in progress when I had to get it from across the province yet again from another cash for build assist. 2012-2014 this time it was a sale gone bad then abandoned. I was called to pick it up since it was still in my name. She now has got the cancers (rust) on the bed sides.... no where near the way she left me.

Or only send money as a purchase (yes it's an option) so pay pal will help you..... If they still do that purchaser protection thing.

Glad I opted to strip an xj with factory air. That's the same style plenum box I pulled :) But what about wiring? Any scrap notes or manual pages to reference? I'm not trusting Haynes or Chilton on this
-
That's the easy and fun part in my books! The wiring scares me. took about 1.5h in a farm field with a break half way through to hide from the p'd off snakes that had made a nest in the plenum box. The dash doesn't have to come apart just unhinged at the bottom after you clear the clutter (console) two bolts easy peasy.

Yea that's the issue. So many folks claim a.c. on their rigs but no write ups yet found

Gonna revive this.... trying to install AC into my 2.5l i4 86. I pulled the plenum box and interior wiring/lines from a 1990 XJ with 4.0l unfortunately there are no 4cyls left around here in the same generation. As far as wiring goes does anyone have references or able to recall from experience what goes where? Ive done AC in a TJ before using a donor for the parts I couldn't get new. But this is a totally different animal - my TJ was prewired for simplicity at the factory so slapping on a compressor, changing a belt and popping in a relay was all it needed as far as powering the system went. Ive yet to see if the MJ was a lucky recepient of lazy with a prewired harness. But I'm skeptical. Please chime in :)

A/c Retrofit In An 86 2.5L?
lil_loco replied to lil_loco's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Is there good writeups on installing a.c.? I've picked up an hvac/plenum box and dash dash control from a 1990 xj as it looked identical to mine but with the a.c. option, vacuum actuator and a.c. core and it was a good price (gas and coffee) to pull. Bought brackets from ebay for the engine pulled from an i4 86XJ. Had to bite the bullet since there are none up here. But what about wiring? Will the harness from the 1990 4.0 xj work? -

2k on the window is worth looking at. Again it's a matter of what the body/sub-frame etc is like. The joy of these trucks (/sarcasm). Then knock it down in price. -
After blowing out the pinion I stripped the housing and reassembled without it so I could roll out of the way until the new set goes in. Donor is a 60,000km set with trac-lok..... Next step: lower from 6.5/10 to an even 6.5 than again to 4.5/6.5.

It's more that the i4 gets you the same power for less wallet when it comes to gas. Never turn the nose up at the i4 :) Sounds like a wreck. I picked up my MJ with a 20,000km professional rebuilt with tags motor/trans and three itty bitty rust spots for $1200. They are out there and like already said it's about finding a solid truck more than anything. -
