No, I mean by only going up to 3" I can keep all the factory stuff and just get it realigned. No need for adjustable CA's, drop brackets, track bar, pitman arm, blah...blah. For now, at least  Jeff edit: you wanna see some "geometry"??? Ask cmcolfax to post up some pics of his YJ that we lifted 4" (suspension) this weekend :D The front's not bad since we installed a drop pitman arm, but you GOTTA see his rear driveline as it sits now. TC drop is next....

AX15 is a much better tranny than the BA10, but the French POS can be valuable because everyone who has one needs another one 'cause their's is broken :D If you were closer, I'd take the rear slider, the springpacks, and the tranny off your hands  You don't have the seat brackets off it, do you? Jeff -
I'm shooting for about 3" of lift when I swap axles. I don't want to mess around with front axle geometry at this point (although I will take those adjustable LCA's from you Pat :D ) Here's my plan so far: front -> ZJ V8 coils plus 2" spacers (replacing 2WD springs) rear -> new-to-me 4WD MJ springpacks (again, replacing 2WD beat to snot packs), either Chevy drop shackes or 2" CJ shackles, and mixing in an extra MJ main spring with the eyes cut off. New shocks all around, not so much that I need them for the lift but they're just plain old Gabriels I put on about 50K miles ago. Does that all sound about right? An extra main leaf would function just about the same as a full length AAL, no? I won't be upset if it had a slight rake to it if that's how it comes out, either. I do still use it as a pickup, and I haul some heavy crap in the bed from time to time. Jeff

hardly tech.... replacement interior lights?
mjeff87 replied to BrettM's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I pulled a set of rear courtesy lights out of a Lincoln Mark IV (or wahtever) awhile back but haven't got them mounted yet  There in the big pile o' parts, on the to-do list someday. They're rectangular, and are almost the same size as the cutout in the pillar. They have a pushbutton, and a clothes hook too :D I'll dig 'em out and post a pic tomorrow. Jeff -

No, the BA10 case is two halves clamshelled together. The case split runs front to back, along the centerline. AX15's are 3 pieces that are joined together, perpendicular to the centerline (front to back). BA10/5: http://www.jeeptech.com/trans/ba10.html AX15: http://www.jeeptech.com/trans/ax15.html If you're still confused, look at the shifter where it bolts into the top. The shift tower on a BA10 is held by 3 bolts, and the AX15 has 4. HTH, Jeff -
Junkyard, if you have one near you :D Otherwise, most of the parts houses should have them, or be able to get them. Advance Auto lists them on their website for $11 http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDeta ... 83&ptset=A Be advised, there are two types of ends on the speedometer end. One is a metal end and one is plastic.....depending on year. They attach differently to the back of the cluster, so make sure you get the right one. And if you have cruise control, there is a small second cable that runs from the cluster to the main cable. HTH, Jeff

Just doing some light stuff on a friend's wooded property Saturday morning, nothing fancy (was mostly only in 2WD, even). Mashed the driverside rear quarter  Ooops, I didn't see that tree there...... Oh well, it's all part of the plan. Now all I gotta do is crunch the other side to match, then cut 'em off  Jeff

Careful there, son.......stuff like that will get a stripe ripped off your shoulder  :D Jeff

I gave it another look....still don't like it :D I did notice that it is leaf sprung in the front, not coiled..... Jeff

Yeah, it's a pull truck. Big ol honkin' 460 (I think)in it, headers with 3" dumps right beside the block  Hearing protection required. The bed is resting on the rears because it's hydraulic/tilt. He's got rams along the framerails to lift it. Guess he just parked it there and dropped the bed on the tars. There's so much of that thing I could take pics of....especially the driveline. There's another place close by where I work here, that built a 4WD Mercedes sedan, on a subframe, sitting on 38-40's. I'll try to get a pic of that for y'all to look at too. Jeff

Website...he's lucky enough to have running water :D (j/k, it's not that bad). Name of the place is After Hours 4X4. I've got his business card, but it's not with me right now. It's down south of Petersburg, kind of behind Ft. Lee, where rt. 460 intersects with I295. Awesome place...he's got crap all over the place. You'd like it, Pat ;)

Yeah, just rarity. I know there are a few diesel owners out there, and the biggest problem they have is sourcing parts. I just figured I'd post up that there's one down here in case anyone needed anything off it. There was a guy on the Yahoo board that this forum grew out of that swapped a Mercedes diesel into his MJ. He had to rig up a rack/pinion setup in place of the stock steering to accomodate it, but he got it done.....just in time for Katrina to destroy it  Last I heard, he was looking for another MJ to start all over again Jeff
-
I hate to be the hater, but no me gusta..... I love MJ's, and I love J10's, but don't mix 'em together  I do credit whoever built it though, it is clean. Jeff
-
It's a place way off the beaten path, the kind of place you're not too comfortable driving up to :D but I did anyway. Met the owner and asked if he worked on Jeeps. When I told him I had an MJ, he said "geee, I don't often get those little Jeeps in here....lemme go take a look at it" The place is full of huge, monster vehicles, and the only Jeeps he had were FSJ's on nothing smaller than 40's  I was down that way a couple days ago, and had the camera so I swung by to get some pics. He had the place locked up and all the guard dogs were out, so I couldn't get but one good pic. Here's one of his toys he had parked outside the fence....and yes, those are Rockwells I'll try to get some more pics this weekend. I know he has a 4X4 schoolbus that he mudbogs with hiding back inside there somewhere... Jeff p.s. Pat, check out the graphics... Image Not Found Image Not Found

4wd MJ leafs vs. 2wd MJ leafs vs. Explorer leafs
mjeff87 replied to Pete M's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Pete, (or anyone that knows offhand) What is the spring eye-to-eye measurement on the MJ leaves? I saw a set of F150 rear leaves in the junkyard the other day that had a crazy amount of arch on them (the axle was gone....they were just hanging there on the mounts). They looked like they'd give an instant 4-5" lift to an MJ, but they measured 62" or thereabouts. I did a quick measure on my MJ in the parking lot and came up with 65" or so. I couldn't get an accurate measure, cause I was by myself with a tape measure and the darn tire was in the way. The ford leaves were set up SUA, 4 leaf packs plus a huge flat overload at the bottom.....beefy, and like I said had hella arch :D I finally got a set of 4WD MJ leaves to build...wondering if I couldn't use the main leaf out of that pack as an AAL (?) Thanks, Jeff -
Dontcha just love VA....they make you appear in traffic court, even if you're out of state. My wife found that out first thing when we moved here LOL. Wish Id'a known you were gonna be down here....I could have rolled out the welcome mat for ya. The 'yard is like 10 minutes from my house. You drove straight past it when you got just north of Petersburg on I95 if that's the way you went  Look me up if you're ever back down this way. Jeff

AX5 clutch problem...need help UPDATE
mjeff87 replied to mjeff87's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Well, here's an interesting update..... (Pete, we need a "slap head" smiley in the list, especially for this) It seems that the gurus at DC decided to equip the pathetic 30RH (a light duty, 3 spd auto, no OD mind you...) with a 23 spline output  Chuck just did a quick visual to confirm, and it's true. That's all well and nice, except we swapped in an AX5 in it's place, and reused the TC. As we all know, AX5's are 21 spline output. So it seems that the clutch is working fine (although the light smoke is an interesting thing, maybe it's just the new clutch disk getting used to the flywheel surface?), but the tranny output is just sitting there spinning inside the 23 spline TC input. Damnit! The thought never even crossed my mind to even CHECK to see if it was 23 spline. Just goes to show you should NEVER EVER second guess anything DC might have done. We're now in the market for a 21 spline 231. Anyone have a spare lying around they'd like to trade for a 23 spline? :D Jeff -
True on the 231's....early models behind the AW4, and ALL models behind a 2.5L (regardless of tranny) are 21 spline. There are variations on the input shaft length, though, depending on the output of the tranny it was behind. Some outputs (AW4 and MJ/XJ AX4/5) are flush, and take a short input, but some others (YJ AX5 in particular) have a recessed output, and take a long spline input. You can use a long spline in place of a short (the extra just sits deeper into the tranny) but not the other way around.....the shafts will engage, but just BARELY, like less than 1/2". Ask me how I know (and have so much experience pulling trannies  ) Jeff

:laughin: I couldn't tell if it was a runner, I was just "browsing" without my tools to kill some time. It is intact, although somebody had already gotten to it and removed the injector pump (didn't take it, just pulled it off). I know the heads are desirable, and the alternator as well....both are still there, although it's in the junkyard for a reason. Jeff

need advice on motor swap
mjeff87 replied to ridergoatee's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
:rotf: The 86 models don't readily accept a 4.0L as the 87+ ones. You'll have to massage the firewall and redo the front clip/raditaor area to accomodate the larger engine. It can be done, but it's not a drop-in job. I went from stock 205's to 235's with 4.10's and I can feel the loss of power, even with that small change. I wouldn't even try to run 31's on mine as it sits, especially if I lived in Colorado  I'm moving up to 4.56's when the 31's go on mine. Jeff -
First one I've seen with my own eyes, they just put it in there yesterday. Anyone need any parts off it? I'm gonna pull the battery tray JIC anyone wants to run a dual battery setup. Anything else worth grabbing? Jeff
-
I've never run one, so I can't speak from experience. But a couple of reputable guys over on NAXJA have, and say they really help (and the 2.5 needs all the help it can get). The way they work is that they add rotational mass to the end of the crank to keep it spinning between ignition (power) pulses..which on a 4 cyl is only 1 every 90 degrees. They don't do so much for top end, rather it keeps the engine running when you lug it down to low rpm's, which is where I have problems. If I keep the wheelspeed/rpm's up either by pedal or using 4LO it does fine, but if I'm in sticky mud or stall on a hill in 4HI I have problems :headpop: There's times I'm in 4LO when I shouldn't have to be, and I don't like crazy wheelspin :driving: I figure between it and deeper gears I can avoid both situations (crosses fingers) I feel it's a worthwhile mod for what it costs if you wheel a 2.5 I'll do a writeup with pics and post in the projects forum when the time comes. Jeff (and NO, I don't want to swap in a 4.0L...at least not yet)
-
Yeah, I know they'd be better, but I'm doing this on the cheap :D I scored a D30 with stock 4.56's in it out of the 'yard (from a 2.5/AW4 XJ) for $80....it's been sitting in the garage in PA for almost a year now. I traded 2 XJ D44's for an MJ D44 (3.07, open  )and a brand new set of 4.56's with install kit. All I need is either an open carrier (and drop in a quick loc later) or a detriot now....I can't decide which to do. Add $100 or so for a gear setup, do a disc conversion on the '44 and slap them in. I oughta go full locker now, but funds are kinda lacking at the moment :( Oh, and I want to add an inertia ring when I swap trannies out. ^^^fall project^^^ Jeff

anywhere between 18-20 mpg in my 2.5, depending on which way the wind is blowing :D 4.10's turning 235/75's, and 171K miles Stepping up to 31's soon, and regearing to 4.56's...hopefully it'll be a wash mileage-wise, although I don't see me commuting in it much at that point. Jeff

I would suspect the O2 sensor is hosed, but if you're trying to start it cold that shouldn't matter. The ECU stays in open loop until the engine warms up, then starts adjusting A/F based on sensors. Try disconnecting it just for kicks and see if it fires :D I had an O2 go bad on my MJ last year and it caused all kinds of random poor running/cutting off problems. I checked everything and couldn't find the cause, and started disconnecting sensors one at a time to see if any had an effect. CPS and MAP sensors killed the engine immediately, TPS just caused more wacky running, but when I pulled the O2 off everything cleared up. I ran with it discoed for about a month, then one day hooked it back up and it didn't change anything....still ran (runs) good. So I left it connected  Do like Pat says and start with the basics (air, fuel, spark, compression) Jeff
