That's the rear section of an AX5 (same as an AX15). The first pic is the rear output, and shows the little channel that's cut into it for the oil to flow to the weephole. Pretend you are an NP231...that's where you would attach yourself to the tranny ;) The second pic is still the tranny output, but looking from the front/side. It shows where the weep hole is visible if you were looking from underneath the vehicle. Like I said, it's almost impossible to see unless you know what and where you are looking for. Alot of people mistakenly think that their tranny case is cracked when gear oil starts covering the back half, crossmember, and TC when in fact it's just oil coming out of that weep hole. Another ingenious Jeep design  Hope that helps! Jeff

Broken bolts, and the owner who wants them out!
mjeff87 replied to lostissues's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I snapped one of each on both sides on mine, and drilled/retapped them. Go slow with the drill bit and use plenty of oil (helps to have a buddy under there with you squirting while you keep drilling). Wear long sleeves or at least cuffed gloves (those little curlies are HOT when they fall!) and eye protection. Not a bad idea to wear earplugs too.) Jeff -
No, the front input is sealed on the TC. If the output seal fails, the leaking fluid is channelled to a weep hole in the mounting flange. It'll run out and all over everything aft of the tranny, to let you know that inner seal is bad. Here's a couple pics of it. It's nearly impossible to see it from underneath, with the TC attached: weep hole from the rear of the flange (about 6 o'clock) Image Not Found viewed from the front (view is REALLY blocked by the crossmember) Image Not Found Jeff

That's just been my experience seeing them in the junkyards, plus it burnt me waaaay back when I first started gathering parts for my 4WD conversion.....I gave a guy $150 for a D30 under a junker 86 MJ he had. The only difference between his and mine was it was an auto and mine was a 5 speed. I just ASSumed  it was a 4.10. I got hosed..... I've also seen them in front of 4.0/AX15's, with tow package, but like Pete said they're fairly rare. I can count on one hand all of the 3.73's I've come across in the last couple years. Jeff

Our friends from PA do the all-inclusive thing, and we've been considering it. Considering it because last year's bar bill was almost $300 (and only $10 of that was the wife). That's why I love island hopping, and Cozumel so much. 2 fer $2 Corona/Sol/Dos Equis. I buy 4 at a time and make her walk with two of them (she doesn't drink beer). Jeff

Keep spinning the ring gear around and look for a set of two numbers all by themselves. Those will be the tooth count of the ring and pinion, and will look something like this: 41 10 (for 4.10's) 37 9 (for 4.11's) etc..... Jeff

I'm down on the te-kill-ya, Herradura is my favorite (anejo). We haven't been back to Cozumel since the docks got wiped out by that hurricane, so I'm curious to see how they look now. The national beer of Belize is Belikin, and I'm anxious to taste it. I fully support the national economy of whatever country/island nation I'm in by drinking my un-fair share of the local brew ;) Mitch, you been to Belize before? That's a new one for us, but we're not gonna get much time to explore the country. The zip line/rappel tour we booked is about 6 hours, and we're only tendered there for 8. (still plenty of time to swill brew, though :D ) Jeff

It's T - 48 hours until the wife and I are off on a wonderful vacation, and I can hardly wait. Heading first to Belize, where we're gonna zip-line across the jungle canopy and do some rappelling  , then up to Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico for a few days of fine mexican food, beer, and tequila. One more day in Grand Cayman (Cuban rum mojitos ), then back to Miami for another day in Little Havana. Lots of pics to follow! Jeff

I’m at work right now, but I can measure the set I have tonight and post up if Pete doesn’t. They would work with drop brackets, which you would need at 5". Plus, the frame end is slightly larger than the factory bracket, so you could build your drop brackets to the correct width and not have to cut the bushing. Gojeep has a niiice writeup on his site on how he did his DB's with WJ LCA's. Jeff Image Not Found Image Not Found

Funny chit there^^^^ I woke up in a panic at about 2AM Sunday morning, and called my neighbor (the one with the Chevelle in the other post), to make sure he remembered to put oil in it. We did all that work pulling, replacing the RMS and installing the new pan....we pre-oiled the new filter and put it on while the engine was still on the stand, and everything, just didn't put any new oil in it  He remembered the oil around 10:00 that night. Woulda been a BIG ooopser there. Jeff

about a dime's worth of washers does the trick... Jeff Image Not Found

ayup..... Think of it in terms of a manual tranny, and dumping the clutch. Get the engine in it's torque peak (or rather HP, but that's another converssation altogether), and dump it.....the stall speed on the TC accomplishes virtually the same thing. That SS isn't very streetable, to say the least. He's had it out maybe three times around the neighborhood, and 2X it died on him (both ignition-related, he's got no love for MSD at the moment). He lives about 1/8 mi away from me, as the crow flies. When he starts that thing up in his driveway, dishes rattle in my cupboards Jeff

I used a brass pipe plug on mine. I had the valve off, and took it with me to Advance Auto and rooted thru their fittings cabinet until I found one that fit :D 1/2" does sound big to me....I seem to remember it being 5/16 or 3/8. (it was a long time ago  ) Jeff

Pics or ban....... :D That's why the wife puts me on the NO JEEP bandwagon before vacation. I tend to hurt myself, often. Jeff

tomken front rock bumper, updated (installed)
mjeff87 replied to mjeff87's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Sorry for the late reply.... Find a small pic that you want to use as your avatar, and save a local copy of it on your PC. Then, under your Profile, scroll to the bottom of the page and enter the path to the file where you saved it, and click upload. The pic cannot be larger than 150X100 pixels, and 21 kb. If it is, you can resize it. Jeff -
I probably do. He mentioned it, and the way he described it didn't sound like it made sense to me. But I do remember him saying he doesn't have power assist brakes (even though there's a booster there) :dunno: I'll quiz him on it the next time I see him. Jeff

It's an aluminum plate that he made up, has 4 holes that match the carb studs in the intake manifold. Three holes in the piece welded to it to put the hoist hook thru, depending on the engine's COG. Pretty trick. I'll see if I can get a pic of it by itself. Jeff

swap in an AX15, and sell me the 33's....... :D (your 700 brackets are en route to you via USPS) Jeff

He's spent more jack on that car than I have hairs on my head and as many hours of wrenchtime. It'll pass everything but a gas station (actually racing gas)......13.5:1 compression  : . That starter you see is a custom unit, super gear reduction, 'bout $200. Regular starter won't even crank it. Had an 1150 cfm Dominator on it, but it was a tad too much carb. He swapped it down to a 1050 LOL. There's so much cam in it (fully girdled rocker bridges/studs) he barely has vaccuum, so he plumbed the fuel pump to run off the power brake booster...somehow. And a 5200 rpm stall speed converter :chillin: Jeff

Helped my other neighbor wrench on his '68 Chevelle today, in the rain. He's been building it for the last three years, full frame-off restoration. The only thing left on it original is the door glass and the roof. He's got a 427 bored .030 over, and it's a monster. We yanked it today to replace the RMS and install a new Moroso oil pan. Fun stuff.....here's a couple pics for y'all to enjoy. I'll get some better ones when he has it out when the sun is shining. Column shift to floor shift conversion
mjeff87 replied to mudrunt's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Just taking a SWAG at this, since I'm a 5 speed guy, but I'd wager to say it's probably plug-and-play. The floorpans are all stamped the same 2WD vs. 4WD, and the cutout is there for the transfercase shifter even on 2WD models. I'd assume the cutout would be there for the floor shifter/cable, but you may have to punch it out. Not sure if the shift cable is the same....the floor shift version might be shorter (?) Jeff -
