Finally had a break in the rainy weather and I was able to herculine the floor. It only took me about 30 minutes and I used the entire $20 quart of liner. It was just enough to complete the entire floor as seen below with a nice thick layer. Image Not Found Image Not Found I also finished putting most of the engine back together however I'm still waiting on piston rings and some various gaskets. Nothing but Honda, Toyota, and Nissan vehicles in my town so the part stores never have anything jeep related in stock. :shake: I should have the motor back in the Jeep by middle of next week. Still need to source a working AX-5 transmission and do the gauge cluster swap. I also found out that I need new doors seals since I found puddles of water inside the jeep again after a couple straight days of rain. :fs1:

 If you look at their photo section on the website, there are some pics of people who have "durabaked" their entire jeep. Interesting but not for me :rotf:

Wish I saw this thread earlier. My vote is for the 870 since I have 3 of them. :D One of them is a similar setup to CW's (side saddle, heat shield, pistol grip, etc..). The other two are "stock", one of them is the Marine Magnum model. Kick @$$ shotgun and more of a subtle silver color rather than chrome/nickel which the picture below leads you to believe. Probably my favorite out of the three. http://www.remington.com/products/firea ... magnum.asp

I've only seen panels for a Cherokee on Quadratec. http://www.quadratec.com/products/72538_40X_PG.htm Obviously MJ owners wouldn't use the entire kit so it is a waste of money. I'm going to go with Line-x since it looks really nice. I almost fabbed up a simple set for my Cherokee but I didn't like the idea of metal on metal. I'm concerned about moisture getting trapped in-between and starting a rusty mess. I did a little paintshop mockup of what the MJ would look like.

Thanks for the tip. I've also heard mixed opinions on rhino liner. I bought a quart of herculiner today at the store. I herculined my CJ-7 before I sold it and it turned out rather well. Took a lot of prep though to make it look good. For the MJ, I'm not worried really about looks since I just want to keep out water and will be putting in a new carpet to cover everything up.

After spending some well invested time with a digital caliper and bore gauge I discovered all my internals are within spec so I'm just goint to rebuild the valve train, new rings, bearings, etc...Soaked every part including the head/block with degreaser and cleaned everything up today. Going to put a fresh coat of paint on after the block comes back from the shop. It needs new camshaft bearings since the old ones are shot. Image Not Found Image Not Found

mfpdm, you have one hell of a clean build going one. Wish mine was that clean....good work, keep it up.

Why not just rebuild the 231? I see a lot of kits on the web for around $125. Very easy to work on and there are plenty of "upgrades" available like stronger shafts, low range gears, SYE, etc...

Updated my profile since I thought I had my city in there but I guess not. Woodburn is about 25 mins south of Portland right off of I5.

I took the bench seat out today and ended up ripping out the vinyl liner. The whole underside was soaked with brown water. I found a decent amount of surface rust but it could have been a lot worse. Going to use either POR or Rustbullet but I haven't decided yet. Image Not Found Image Not Found I did find some goodies though. :D 1 new pair of wipers complete tire iron/jack system 3 1st aid kits 4 emergency hazard reflectors 2 flares 1 12v orange flashing magnetic light 1 new serpentine belt 1 new upper radiator hose 1 new radiator cap 2 hose clamps 1 windshield squeegee 1 ice scraper 1 extra ball for hitch 1 glove lots of taco bell hot sauce packets yummy only 46 cents. was hoping for more :rotf:

Double-checked, the one I looked up was a generic one. Dealer is just down the road from me but I'm going to hold out for now. Keeping my eye open for a local cherokee donor for the gauge swap and new wheels/tires. If I can't find the part on the donor will hit the dealer down the road from me. Thanks guys.

Spent a few hours cleaning up the engine bay including all the nuts, bolts, and screws. I also washed the jeep since it sat for a couple months and was looking rather sad :D I also used mspaint to create a "mockup" of how the jeep would look with a coating of rhino/line-x/herc along the door panels. I'm getting ready to do the same thing on my 2001 cherokee since the cheapo sport trim has been falling off and/or warped. Going to try and find a steal from craigslist. I HATE those little 205 donut tires and I'm not fond of the rims either. Gonna replace them with 225/75's along with newer style jeep rims. Image Not Found Image Not Found

Thanks! Local part store lists it for 9.99 so I think I'll pick one up.

Granted I did not get a lot of sleep last night but I couldn't find anything on my database repair CD or my hayes manuals. I discovered a little broken plastic piece with two wires connected to it. Green/Black and Green/Brown from the looks of it. Can someone please tell me what the hell this thing is? Ground device for something? Never seen it in a jeep before... :hmm: Maybe it's part of the turbo encabulator ???? :rotfl2:

Finished installing suspension, steering components, and did a quick alignment. I also had a helper today...told the wife that we need another jeep now :brows: De-gunked engine components and cleaned up the accessories. Now to find a donor for the gauge & power steering swap. Image Not Found

I haven't swapped out my bench seat yet so I can't answer your question but I can tell you I prefer earlier model bucket seats. The new model seats in my 01 cherokee suck. I used to drive a beat up 89 cherokee and the seats were a lot more comfortable. That is my opinion though and everyone's lower back is different. :D

lol, was about to post but mfpdm beat me to it. I also have the Mitchell repair system cd which lists the same for 2.5/4.0 engines.

Water Pump 1990 Comanche 4.0
kar120c replied to SchneiderFishing's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Any brand from you local parts store should do. If you live in a warmer climate, 4x4 or tow with your jeep I'd highly recommend a flowkooler brand waterpump. I run one in my cherokee and it makes a huge difference. Instead of constantly running 210 (or higher in summer with AC on) it runs solid at 195 and never goes above 210 even on those hot days with stop-and-go traffic. -
Needs a new sticker since the old one is faded and curled on the edges. Enlisted right after high school and spent 8 years in. Best damn thing I could have ever done. Anyways got the 4wd dana 30 axle swapped in today. Slow but steady progress.... Image Not Found

Got the front axle out today and removed the steering box. Forgot very two important B's (a buddy and beer). I could have used them. Some jackass thought it would be a great idea to use torx bolts for the uppper control arms. Destroyed two hex bits and finally got a big ole pair of vice grips to hold them in place. Hopefully have time to install the donor Dana 30 tomorrow. Anyone know if my current pitman arm (manual steer) will work with a power steering box? Image Not Found Image Not Found

IIRC the pattern is 5x5.5 from the Willys all the way to the CJ8. Bolt pattern changed on the newer jeeps (wranglers, cherokees, etc to 5x4.5) So no I don't think that will work.
-
How is your battery / alternator? I know this is common on newer model jeeps that have a dying battery / alternator. Runs fine when you apply throttle but at idle it barely runs. With a bad battery or alternator it may not be putting out enough juice and making the sensors / ECM go nuts. I had this happen twice on both of my jeeps , each time it was a bad battery.

Stripped the engine today. Discovered the camshaft bearings were not in great shape. The bearing closest to the front was BAD. Looks like someone went crazy with a punch tool and sharp object. Tried to take a picture but I'm no photographer. Now for a trip to the machine shop and install the front axle. Image Not Found Image Not Found

Probably the biggest part of the truck I dislike. One of the very last things I do will be a spray on bedliner and a new paint job. Those graphics just irritate the living hell out of me.

Bought from my father this last winter for a whopping $0 which makes me the second owner. 230k+ hard miles, pretty much everything was shot. Drove from his house to mine which was about 12 miles, pulled into my driveway and the radiator blew. :rotfl2: So far I've pulled the engine, transmission, exhaust, and tore up some of the interior. Planning on keeping it close to stock since I already have to other lifted jeeps. Specs 2.5L 4cyl AX-4 2wd trans -> swap to AX-5 & NP231 Dana 35 rear 3.54 open straight tube front -> swap to dana 30 3.54 open Manual steer -> swap to power steering No A/C -> Fix windows :D The Good Body & paint is in great condition. No dents, dings, scratches, etc... Interior in good shape considering other MJ's I've seen. No yucky muck on underside of driveline. Power brakes The Bad Bed needs a bedliner. Front / Rear brakes need to be replaced along with seals Crappy idiot-light gauges (need to do the swap) Headliner shot, needs a new one. e-brake doesn't work (foot operated, teeth worn) 205-70-15s with a ridiculously small spare. (will probably put 225 or 235's on) Exhaust (muff & cat are shot, needs replaced) Needs various other stuff, shocks, radiator, clutch. Rear leafs shot. Sits level but no resistance to any amount of weight. *PICS* Got some pics uploaded now. Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found Image Not Found
