My new to me XJ has a cat, followed by a 30" or so Cherry bomb glass pack. Surprisingly it isn't really any louder than my MJ with a stock muffler, no cat.

I'm living your dream :D Build sheet says NV3550, but it's a 94 XJ. which I believe means AX15.

After Lift My Rear Tires Rub
mvusse replied to hogelectra's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I had a problem with my 235/75R15s on 15x7 stock rims hitting the inside of the rear wheel wells under flex. Both with stock rear suspension and with 4.5" lift. Those tires are pretty much equivalent to 30x9.50. Fixed mine with 1.5" spacers. -
exhaust pipe hitting xmember
mvusse replied to james750's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Hijack because of a related problem. I just got a Cherokee, which had a trailer hitch installed just weeks ago. Tail pipe is up against trailer hitch and rattles once in a while. Is there any type of material I can force between the two like rubber or so to eliminate the rattle that will not be affected (ie melt) by the exhaust heat? -
Too bad it's not a D44, but I knew it wasn't a D35. And it's better than a D35, but then, isn't everything? Anyhow, around 6pm I requested the build sheet, just after 6:30 I received it. Some stuff is wrong, some stuff doesn't make sense and some stuff is nonsense, like them calling it a *Grand* Cherokee. Here it is:
-
Got underneath it today, and no skid plates :( That will have to be rectified along with an instrument cluster with gauges. But: isn't that a 44?

Congrats! Planned or not, they're still a joy.

Pointing up is full brake power to the rear. Only good if you have like 1000 pounds of sand in the back. Neutral position for an empty bed is horizontal toward the center of the truck (right if you're looking from behind).

are the back of mj's way too light?

Get a good set of snow tires. Snow tires on my 2wd Ford got me in the snow where any 4wd with all season tires could go. Before the snow tires it was almost impossible to get going, and almost impossible to keep straight once you did get going. I got 4 good snow tires on my Comanche (4wd) and it has laughed at everything I threw at it. Well, almost. 18" of snow that got rained on and refroze on top did make going uphill a bit of work. Had to back up a bit and get some momentum going again a few times. Going through a 3 foot tall snow bank left by a plow took more than one try to get through as well. The only time I had an unintended fish tail was on 2" fluff with solid ice underneath pulling away from a stop sign and turning. never any problem keeping it straight while on the brakes, but I have a 100 pound or so cap on my truck and a bunch of junk in the back. -
Well, I got it! Turns out after I wiped most of the snow off it's not as nice as I thought body-wise. There is rust (and bondo!) under the paint, and although the paint is at least a few years old, it is definitely not the original coat. Engine runs good, transmission shifts good, clutch is good, steering is nice and tight and it's got almost new tires. Not a drop of oil anywhere in the engine compartment or under engine, slight hint of a brown spot on the air filter. Rear wiper is missing. There's rot through above ps front wheel. That fender may get replaced, unless I take care of it by raising the flare. Once the weather warms up it'll be lifted 2" using parts I already have around here.

I Canada I got pulled over by OPP *BECAUSE* I waved. But here I wave at the local police. Then again, I know most of them personally.

Yeah, I had to move to two different countries, 5000 miles away from home, in order to become a redneck.

A few years ago I pulled a flower delivery van out of a snow bank in front of my house. Guy gave me a certificate for a free rose. I used the cert. and gave the rose to my then wife. 2 days later the same guy in the same van mistook a farm field access road for a driveway and got hopelessly stuck in the mud under the snow 1/4 from where I work. So I got the Suburban and spent 45 minutes dragging him back all the way back to the road. Didn't get a certificate this time, but he did ask for my name. When I got home the wife told me the flower van had been there, just stopped in front of the house for a few minutes, then drove off. :dunno: 3 days later I get a package in the mail. It's a box of gourmet chocolates, crackers, cheese and a bottle of wine!

Coolant temp sensor is usually the culprit, but a bad O2 sensor has the exact same effect: computer running in open loop.

Even trade for my Suburban. Yes, they are getting the better end of the deal, but I don't have a use for the Suburban any more, the Cherokee will get better mileage, and I think the Comanche will like having a cousin parked next to it. It is as nice as it looks in the photos. No rust anywhere that I can find, unless it's hiding under a new coat of paint. It was brought to Ohio from NC a few years ago, where it was bought at a police auction; recovered stolen vehicle, so it has a salvage-rebuilt title. That's been long enough ago that any gremlins should have been found and fixed by now. The only thing bad I could find was that the exhaust sometimes rattles against the just installed new trailer hitch, and the headliner is sagging. It is not going to see anything other than pavement until I get sliders on it. The rockers are in like new shape, I'd like them to stay that way. It will eventually replace the Comanche as the play rig, but not any time soon.

exhaust pipe hitting xmember
mvusse replied to james750's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
There's supposed to be a bracket on the rear side of the crossmember that bolts to the lower 2 flange bolts that connect the (stock) catalytic converter to the (stock) front pipe. With an after market exhaust, there may not be a 4 bolt flange connector there and you're going to have to figure something out yourself. -
1-2" Lift and upgrade to new shocks. Advice?
mvusse replied to phenryiv1's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
To fit 30x9.50 (which measure the same as 235/75R15), you do not need a lift. -

1-2" Lift and upgrade to new shocks. Advice?
mvusse replied to phenryiv1's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Buy Rusty's at your own risk. A lot of people here have had problems with their products, and then even more problems trying to get the parts replaced. The quality of their parts sucks. Their customer support sucks even more. -
I'm guessing the starter was physically frozen with ice. Today the temp got up to 32.5 degrees, and she started right up, cranking normal speed.

I help people out when I can, and in the past never really got any help when I could use it, but what do you do? I help people because I like to help people. Other people sit on their @$$ watching TV instead of fixing their kid's bicycle tire because they like to watch TV and don't like to fix tires or spend time with their kids. I don't understand people like that, I don't try to understand them. I used to get worked up about stuff like that when I was younger. As I'm getting older I don't let it get to me any more. I'm happy with the neighbourhood I live in now; much better than the old one. Next door used to be the town's party house, but since the owner kicked his room mates out, let his girlfriend move and and got married he grew up a lot, and took after the neighbours helping out when he can. Neighbour next to him always uses his snow blower to do everyone's side walk and driveway for those of us who have the driveway in front of their house. Usually also takes care of my dog when I'm out of town. Person across from him is always ready to help with carpentry or plumbing when needed or loan equipment, like his generator when the power was out. He keeps trying to get me to go to church, but that has pretty much become a private joke between us. Across from my next door neighbour keeps busy with his antique tractors (including steam powered) and usually keeps the kids entertained with his smaller toys, like a miniature thrasher powered by a kid's pedal tractor, or handing out supersoakers to all the neighbourhood kids and sending them off on a specific mission with them. On top of that school is walking distance, kids' grandma (ex-mother-in-law) lives one block away and her mother (great grandma) lives half a block up the hill. I have become their go-to guy when something needs fixed over the years as well.

Well, the Suburban definitely has a problem, as it is 17 degrees now and it still don't start. Had it hooked up to a charger and no change. Tomorrow I will take the starter and battery out to have them tested, and replace if defective. Got a warranty on both. Hope it is one or the other, cause if not I don't know what it would be. And no fixed Suburban means no trade for a Cherokee. We made it down to -21 this morning, supposed to be a low of +20 tomorrow morning. Shorts and T-shirt weather.

I think either alternator fits, although the bigger one is physically bigger and a bit tight. And if I remember correctly from when I replaced mine, they are both priced the same, so.... I agree, get the bigger one.

I didn't know the Renix control system had a "limp mode" as such. It's likely barely be able to limp because of the blown head gasket/no compression on one or more cylinders.
