you probably got the newer ones, which still fit but are thinner. can't run them without newer shafts unfortunately. maybe also do your ujoints before you install the unit bearing.. Wouldnt it be fun to put in the joints with the bearings in. Come on  I have cast, so I'll order the older ones.

How many inches do you get from the chevy shackles? I want 3" of lift for the rear on mine. I have a set in the garage I havnt put on yet. They have two holes for height. 1" or 2" depending on the hole you bolt.

well today was interesting needless to say. i took back the wrong u-joints and spent the rest of the morning hunting down the right ones. i got them in ok with no problems. they were really tight at first after i had installed them but tapped on the yoke with a hammer and it set them perfectly(read that in a post, it worked!!!) then i also found new unit bearings for $175.00 each (ouch) but they were the wrong type, so i took em back and got my money. the computer said they were for a 90 mj, but they didnt work. i think i need the ones from 89. ill be checking that out. it sure would have been nice to throw them in while it was all apart though. i did get rid of the disco and permenently got rid of the vacuum system for 4wd by shimming over the fork with washers. i also got rid of the disco motor thing by plugging the hole with a 3/8 x 3 bolt (the fork also fits perfectly on the bolt. here is a picture of the stuff i used to do it. here is the bolt plugging the hole with a rubber bushing/washer and a o-ring here is inside, i used a piece of tube 3/8 ID x 5/8 OD between the bolt head and the lock nut so the bolt wouldnt move around. the guy at the hardware store was really cool and patient. i test drove the mj after i was done to see if the death wobble was gone. it was still there, just like a pimple on your @$$ that won't go away. i drove it right to the alignment place, ill let them have their way with it for a few. then we'll see. i guess ill have to get those wheel bearings sooner than i had hoped, also need to get the ball joints done. when i go over a harder bump i can hear something kinda knock or rattle. sounds like the tire is loose or something. could this be the ball joints. when i had everything apart i tried to wobble the knuckle to see if the ball joint were loose, but they seem tight. i don't know, but i will figure it out!!! :brows:

well i must need to buy the 89 unit bearings then. doesnt make sense to me cause my truck is a 90. maybe its just that brand that is off. they were jks and were $175.00 each. thanks for all the input.

i have great advice, don't DO WHAT I DID! i thought i was going to save money by buying different parts from different places. i had a list and started buying parts here and there. not a great idea. i think it cost me alot more in the long run. i also did a bolt on soa in the rear, another mistake, should have welded.(next project) i strongly suggest getting a good kit that is all put together. in my experience, i would have saved alot of money doing it that way. also, if your going with 6.5" of lift, save yourself another headache and go with long arms right from the get go. to do it again, i would go with motion or RE. your in the right place though. good luck

nice work pat. i still need to mount my amp to the rear. looks great ,can't wait til i can start on the interior of mine. great inspiration.

started working on the axle u-joints this morning. i went yesterday to get the u-joints. went once and they couldnt find them in the computer, so i picked up a 35mm axle socket (wrong) went back, returned it for a 36mm (right one) and asked this new guy for the u-joints. he found them in the computer, so i took 3 of them, one extra for the trail. this morning came around, i started into it and found they gave me the wrong joints. its wierd because i even looked at the part number on their computer and it matched the ones he gave me. not really his fault. ill just take the old ones in tomorrow. but i did however pull both axles and the shift acuator in preperation for when i get the new ones. pulling the unit bearings out i discovered i should just replace those as well. $$$ the passenger side unit bearing is super smooth, but the drivers side is a little rough, almost clicks as you turn it like a safe dial. one thing i am concerned about is when i pulled the axles out, I'm not sure if i was suppose to mark how i took them out, so i can put them in the same way. anyone know?? maybe ill just post it in tech. ive searched it and nothin. one other project I'm going to do while I'm at it is eliminating the vacuum switch actuator on the axle. I'm going to use washers to shim the fork over to keep it there. then I'm going to try to get rid of the disc (motor) i think thats what its called. MJEFF87 gave me this idea, and i like it. no more vacuum problems!!! ill post pictures of that when I'm done. drivers side passenger side stuffed paper towel in there to keep the dust out until the morning

I'm back to the drawing board with DEATH WOBBLE!!!!!!!  :headpop: i went wheeling today at azusa in san gabriel canyon and had a blast, now that is stuck, this cherokee sucked water in the motor, it was dead in the water but when it was time to head home i got on the road and wholly ship!! all hell broke loose. Anything over 35 and it was on with the smallest bump. Azusa is roughly 45 miles from my house. wouldnt be bad if i lived in the country and had some good views, but to get to my house from there, i have to go through downtown L.A. sucked, it took me about 3 hours and 3 cans of mace :chillin: when i got home i jacked it up and really had a good look at things. i have replaced almost everything in the front end that can move (joints, ect.) the only thing i havnt changed are the u-joints and wheel bearings in the front end, so that narrowed it down a bit. i took the tires off and grabbed the axle and gave it a shake and sure enough. there are no needle bearings left in the passenger side. this is good and bad. the bad is, i have never messed with axles before, so i have alot of learning to do. the good. this was probley the problem with death wobble to begin with and i just missed it. At least i changed alot of stuff to new in the process.

got the new (old seats) put in today. had to shim the drivers side to level it out though. passenger side was fine. weird. i have so much work still on the interior. i need to get new carpet still and also want to seal the floor boards. i only have a little rust right where the front inner bolt is for the seats. i think its just surface rust though. i also installed a new back carpeted panel, no picture though, started to get dark on me. i also put the e-brake extension on, ive been putting that off way to long but needed to get it done before i go wheelin. i just need to get the the bolt on soa bolts cut down, i tried with a sawzall, but that was a joke. i went through 4 metal blades and only made it 1/2 way through 1 bolt. i think ill try and angle grinder with a cut off wheel. any suggestions on that.?? oh yea, new seat covers :D had to ditch the new upholstery idea due to lack of funds.

got the drive shaft extended the other day and installed. i found a place in compton that does nothing but drive shafts and diffs, really cool guy in there. he ended up selling me a yj slip yoke that he had in stock for half the price of the dealer one i bought. i put spicer joints on it. i ended up extending the drive shaft by 1 5/8" I am now death wobble free!!!! i can't believe all the parts i have changed out. the only thing i havnt done in the front end are the ball joints and wheel bearings. if i still had death wobble, that would be my next project. my steering is super tight now and feels great, what a pleasure to drive. i still get nervous driving on the freeway, i think ive got post tramatic death wobble syndrome. now I'm ready for new tires. i may be getting some for christmas :brows: ive been putting out the hints heavy enough, if i don't ill just get some anyway, but next month.
